Next SL65 AMG Black Series Will Boast 670 Horsepower
It won't make its official debut until this summer, but the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is already staking its claim as one of the most extreme Mercedes-Benzes ever built.
It starts with a 6.0-liter twin turbo V12 engine. In the standard SL65 AMG it pumps out a healthy 604 horsepower, but in the Black Series the same engine gets cranked up to 670 hp. The torque peak won't increase, but given that it already sits at 738 pound-feet, there's really isn't a need for more. The five-speed automatic transmission, torque converter and all, will remain, but it will get two Sport shift programs, with the second delivering quicker gearchanges timed at just 250 milliseconds.
In addition to the added power, the engineers at Mercedes-Benz concentrated on reducing the car's weight. AMG's engineers chucked the heavy airbag suspension setup on the standard SL65 for steel coil springs, lost the Active Body Control system and made the Black's trunk, vented hood, roof, vented front fenders and bumpers out of carbon fiber.
Weight savings also turned the car into a coupe. Instead of a heavy folding hardtop, the Black Series gets a fixed roof fortified with a fully integrated roll cage. The changes reduce the car's overall weight by 570 pounds and give it a power-to-weight ratio of 1 horsepower per 6.1 pounds.

Oh come on, is that all u got? The SLR is waiting for retirement next year which is when this car comes out (in case ud didnt read it).
AND you do know that the SLC (the SLR's presumptive replacement) will be even more extreme than this black series right?

Assuming price was no issue I'd still go for the SLR Roadster or the regular SL65. I just love drop tops!!

What's the point of all this HP when the U.S speed limit is only 65 miles per hour.

The point is you'd be able to accelerate to 65mph in less than 4 seconds 100 times a day if you feel like being somewhat legal...and occasionally accelerate to 160mph in another 10 seconds or so...what a rush that would feel...fun fun fun.

I'm about getting there too. I'd much rather have a Porsche GT3 with "only" 415 horsepower. This car is destined to fill a valet parking spaces, not the paddock.

richard112360 brings up an interesting point.
So let me re-ask the question.
Why do us Americans need 500-horsepower luxury cars when all we do is drive to the golf club with them at speeds well under 65 mph.
I hope richard112360 can answer that one.

"What's the point of all this HP when the U.S speed limit is only 65 miles per hour."
this car's made in Germany, first of all, they have the damn autobahn to drive on with no speed limits haha
...and secondly, how many owners of an SL 65 AMG Black Series will give a flying f*ck about the US speed limit of 65?

Not that impressive considering the fact that this engine is already detuned due to the fact that they couldn't fit a proper transmission that wouldn't eat its own cogs.
Fit a proper transmission, let it be to its nominal power and voilà! I think it could churn out over 800 pound feet. Rumours where that it could approach a thousand pound feet.

That isn't a shocking number. Imagine that SL65 gets the Brabus treatment the powers going to be so crazy that the car will be stationary and burning rubber =P.. and i love it.
The SL is still the benchmark for this segment. In terms of luxury and solidity of the build it's still superior to the 6 series and XK. The sound of AMG and or Merc's V8 engines are beautiful. The closest sound in the sound would be Audi's V8's.
