Next-generation Nissan 'Z' will get dual-clutch from GT-R
While big brother GT-R takes on the Porsche 911s and the BMW M3s, little brother 2010 370Z is on its way to take on the Audi TTs, BMW 1-Seires and the Mitsubishi Evos. A sneak peek was recently seen at the Nissan 360 press event.

According to sources of CARandDRIVER (as revealed in the June 2008 issue), the platform of the next-generation Nissan Z will be lighter and wider. Of course we’ve already heard numerous times before that the G37’s 3.7 liter V6, 330-hp will find its way under the hood and the badge will be changed to the 370Z.

What’s new is...

280Z still sounds better.

It sure does, but it would seem a little strange to put a 3.7 liter engine in it and then call it the 280... But then again, Lexus but a 5 liter V8 in a car and called it the 600, so I guess anything goes :D

Actually, I'd like it if they put a high rev I4 (Like the QR25DE from the versa spec V but with direct injection and a 7500rpm redline for about 250hp) under the hood and called it a 280Z. Adequate performance and good fuel economy is a nice combo...

Audi TT's yes... 1-series maybe... how does this compete against an EVO!?

Well, EVO X is 3500 lb and 370Z will be 3100 lb. That's why it can now compete.

Hmm... If they are going to be using a lot of the parts from the G37 coupe, then what is the point?! "It's basically an Infiniti, But with a Nissan-badge!!! Isn't that something?!"... That's just about the worst sales pitch ever!

But you can have the Nissfiniti 370z for a lot less money. People will respect you for not spending your money on the puffy g37.

The G37 and the Z may share a lot of parts, but there is one feature that tells them apart: rear seats. The Z is a 2-seater while the G is a 2+2. Remember back in the 80's when they had the 300ZX 2+2? The G is linda that now.

linda who?
2 seats = $5,000?
This makes sense?
Lets stick with puffy.

I meant to say "kinda". It's kinda difficult to type correctly when you are doing it from an iPhone. The keyboard is a little tricky.

nissan isnt stupid, its great when they use trickle down technology.

haters will still hate, but most will look at this as a reason to check out the Z.
i know i will

Ha, Regan, the only trickle is from your ears. Nissan builds everything with the same motor/platform/tranny/tire size, it's called being CHEAP!
By the way, they are stupid, CVT!

@TheSailor

How about the 370z weighs 250kg less than the G37/skyline and its a 2 seater and they have diverent wheel basses. The Z4 and 3-serie's also share a lot of parts but they still have thear own part in the market.

I would just like to point out that Volkswagen had a dual-clutch transmission in the R32 back in 2003. :)

Absolutely, congratulations to BorgWarner's European Advanced Transmission Development Center in Ketsch, Germany for being the "center" of development for this new dual-clutch technology.

I think the author of this article needs to rethink the competition for the 370Z. The GTR is a 911 TT competitor, not a M3 competitor, the M3 provides the same performance as a 911 Carrera S, so it is no competitor to the 911TT. The 370Z, could be a M3 competitor on the cheap while the G37 is a 335i competitor

"370Z an M3 competitor on the cheap"? If the G37 is a 335i competitor, please explain to me how the less expensive, less prestigious version of the G37 is a competitor to a vehicle ABOVE the 335i? Is the 370Z going to be considered a 911 competitor too? Because the M3 is.

For the money I'm sure the Z is a fine car. But let's be fair. The 370Z is absolutely, unequivocably, 100% NOT an M3 competitor. Not "on the cheap", not "on the sly", not "on the lam", not "on" anything. Except maybe acid. As in "if you think the Z and an M3 are even remotely in the same league, you need to stop dropping so much acid".

I think you're on the right track, but at the same time M3s are 2door 4 seaters. The author is probably using price as to determine what would be a good comparison. IMO, What would be a direct comparison? Z4 coupe? TT? S2K? 2door 2 seater.

On another note, I really hope they work on build quality w/ the next gen Z.

dlindlin - 6/10/2008 1:29:12 AM
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
The main thing Z cannot compete w/ M3 is number of seats and the quality of interior plastics, if that's what you care about.

What IS3andME refers to is the performance. They are already head to head at Nurburgring for last generation, as you can see from the test by German magazine Sport Auto(350Z-8:26/M3-8:22/335-8:26). It'll be interesting to see the effect of +horsepower w/ -weight this time.

Target: 8:05 BMW M3 E92 Sport Auto 12/07

350Z grand touring and G37 sport have the same MSRP. you could have a stripped out 350Z for a few thousand less, but then you end up with....not much.

btw, the GTR has a 6 speed dual clutch, either theres a typo or this 7 speed dual clutch is not, in fact, from the GTR.

So there will be 3 options: auto, manual, and dual-clutch, or no auto will be provided?

gsh23 - I was thinking the same thing. It seems like it would use the new Infiniti 7 speed auto or the 6-speed dual clutch manual from the GTR.
