Nissan GT-R in 2008 SUPER GT Round 3
Round 3 of the 2008 SUPER GT took place on May 4th (Sunday) at Fuji Speedway (1 lap: 4.563kms), located in Oyama town, Shizuoka prefecture. All five NISSAN GT-R entries were saddled with added weight for the race in the form of a “Special Performance Adjustment”. The #12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R was the top qualifier in 10th, the car completing the race in 9th place.

The race, occurring in the middle of the Golden Week holidays, attracted 56,900 race fans to Fuji Speedway in warm but overcast and breezy conditions, the 500-kilometre event getting underway at 14:00. The NISSAN GT-R entries, after scoring consecutive 1-2 finishes in the first two rounds of the season, all finished down the order in qualifying after the imposition of the “Special Performance Adjustment”.

The lightest among the GT-Rs, the #24 KONDO Racing machine of Joao Paolo de Oliveira and Seiji Ara started 12th, but by the end of the opening lap had jumped to ninth. Starting driver Oliveira ran consistently, moving up one more position to eighth on lap 22. After all entries had made their routine pit stops and driver changes, the order settled down again on lap 40, and the car was running ninth. Seiji Ara continued the consistent pace, but on lap 66 a tyre blew, necessitating an unscheduled return to the pits and lost time. He went back out on track, but was unable to claw back the positions and ended the day 11th.

The #12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R (Tsugio Matsuda/Sebastien Philippe) started the day in 10th, but fell to 13th in the opening laps. Shortly after, a racing accident with the #22 GT-R caused the car to fall to 15th. The machine would rise as high as 7th in the latter stages but spun on its own on lap 81, settling into 10th and eventually finishing 9th.

Meanwhile the #3 YellowHat Tomica Moba Ho! GT-R suffered from mechanical problems, ending the race is the same position it started, 15th.

Neither of the two NISMO entries was able to reach the heights of the two previous races. NISSAN’s ace car, the #23 XANAVI NISMO GT-R (Satoshi Motoyama/Benoit Treluyer), was imposed the heaviest success ballast yet for its two consecutive wins. This, plus the Special Performance Adjustment, meant the car couldn’t show its previous prowess, and started 13th.

Every lap, the #23 machine was two seconds slower than the top cars, and though they saved their tyres and fuel with a one-stop strategy, the gap to the front was so big they were unable to improve their pace, finishing the day 14th.

Their teammates in the #22 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R (Michael Krumm/Masataka Yanagida) started 16th.

The conditions in the car were favourable, and they were expected to move up in the early stages. However, a few problems, including making contact with the #12 car, the careless mistake by Yanagida resulting in a 10-second Stop and Go penalty, saw Krumm finish 10th – a points-scoring position. Unfortunately, on the last lap he made contact with another car while fighting for position, receiving a 35-second penalty, demoting the car to 12th.

Team Director Yoshitaka Iijima’s comments after the race:

“It was an unfortunate result today. The #22 car was beset with misfortune and mistakes, but ran well. Therefore I regret that the drivers received three penalties. As for the #23 machine, it was just too heavy with the Special Performance Adjustment. We simply weren’t able to show the performance of the car all weekend. In SUPER GT, the regulations don’t allow a winner to keep on winning. Also, this time the Special Performance Adjustment was heavier than expected. However, from here the situation changes. We’ll reflect on this ahead of the next round at Sepang where we’ll be doing our level best for all of our fans.”

"All five NISSAN GT-R entries were saddled with added weight for the race in the form of a “Special Performance Adjustment”."

like in old days in racing in australia and other countries not only japan TurboSpyder :

Minor league racing. Did it ever win a *major international race* where there were *factory* teams from Porsche or Ferrari? I’m tired of the exaggeration and BS regarding the GT-R’s race wins.

Turbospyder,

u r obviously so ignorant. Thailand? go and look up in wikipedia for heaven's sake!

The Japan super GT is no Minor League. It's well known in Asia Pacific with international races in China and Malaysia's F1 circuit. ( U can stop talking anything international since you r geographically challenged! Sepang is in Malaysia, not in thailand if that what u think)

And there are Porsches, Ferrari's, BMWs and even lamborghinis in these races.
And they don't quite shine.

FYI the only truly international motorsport racings are the F1, A1 and WRC.

Why does it have to be factory teams? Will that ensure victory? that's naive.

You obviously don't understand racing. Even in formula 1, not all teams are factory sponsored. There are race specialists - McLaren, Cosworth, Sauber, Williams etc.

You certainly have strange requirements to ensure Porsche labeled to be on top of the game. you certainly have problem with the GTR. I don't have problem if one day Porsche took the throne again from GTR. I just switch cars like everyone.

BTW, in *factory* standard trim, the GTR already beaten the F430, 911 turbo, 911 GT3, R8 and M3. So what other exaggeration and BS you want regarding GTR.

With the performance of R35 GTR, cars like 911 is the one beginning to look exaggerated and over-rated.

What I like it to be in my garage...? Porsche cayenne GTS and a Nissan GTR R35.

if u think I'm biased.

I stopped taking Clarkson seriously a long time ago. He's more of a story teller or entertainer than an auto journalist.

Yes it is. It's a minor regional series that few people in the west have heard of. If you went to Ferrari or Porsche and asked them if they'll be competing in the Japan super GT, they'd probably say "What's that?".

Formula One, Le Mans, American Le Mans series, WRC, Paris to Dakar are the major international races that have prestige and that the European teams make a point to participate in.

and PWRC and touring car racing also - WTCC - world touring car racing . these are international races . there are also local touring car racing e.g.DTM , japan super gt with aren`t as important . skyline gt-r in 90`s was racing in touring car racing in group A until it was discontinued and dominated group A .
BMW before it bought sauber F1 team was racing only (as i know) in touring car racing - WTCC , ETCC . now citroen domineted wrc , renault was winning in F1 and and don`t have cars to compete with subaru or ferrari .

Turbospyder,

Still minor league? ha ha ha

This is what we call eurocentric or americanocentric. refusing to accept prominence from other continents.

japan is one hell of an efficient country. I've been there again last year visiting one of their zero waste factories. amazing

If you want to talk about standards.. japan and germany are the benchmark.
They dont need to be *international* to gain recognition from people like u.

Even in the US there's a following to the super GT
http://www.gtlivetour.com/

Go on... keep undermining everything from the east, soon people will stop taking u seriously.
Ps which brand of flat screen TV do you own? or wish to own?

In case you dont know. Ferrari & Porsche actually sold most of their cars in china. And you think they dont take notice what's happening on that part of the world?

And they have been paying attention to japanese cars ever since the driveable NSX came out. And ferrari was struggling with 348.

And GTR which is a product of this *minor league* has beaten porsche, M3, R8 and F430?

Who are u to judge?

The world has been Eurocentric for quite some time now based on merit. For example, look at all aspects of Japanese society from its form of government to the peoples’ style of dress to their wedding ceremonies - all Euro/Western. Where would they be if they hadn’t made this wholesale change to adopt western science and technology and form of government?

Yes, America has quickly lost its competitiveness in the world but that's because the makeup of its population has changed very quickly.

In which races/series has the GT-R beaten those cars? Next month Ferrari and Porsche will be at Le Mans - will Nissan be there? A Japanese manufacturer has won Le Mans only once and that was Mazda.

"A Japanese manufacturer has won Le Mans only once and that was Mazda."

and mazda couldn`t win again with their design becouse after that FIA banned rotary engines(or not banned but changed rules for wankel powered cars):
http://www.tenerife-training.net/Tenerife-News-Cycling-Blog/2007/10/inspirational-people/the-1991-le-mans-mazda-team-and-the-legendary-rotary-renown-787b/
citation:
"So successful was Mazda’s entry in the 1991 race that the rules for subsequent races were changed to ban the rotary engine from competing in subsequent Le Mans endurance races."

why don`t they banned audi r10 TDI ? mazda was racing in earlier years also and before they won FIA didn`t ban rotary engines . nissan best places at le mans :1990,1994 - 5th ;1998-3rd and other japanese manufactures were few times winning in their classes , of course less times than e.g. porsche .
ps:audi R10 TDI has used GTL (gas to liquid) fuel , this fuel has carbon chains shorter that "normal" diesel , something beteen petrol and diesel - the best fuel for combustion engine and is absolutely clear(only clear hydrocarbons) - that`s only reason why "diesel is faster than petrol .
"The world has been Eurocentric for quite some time now based on merit. I don`t know japanese culture but I think it`s quite different from my and this have nothing to today`s cars becouse they are developed by today`s people not this few the most important for science from past . where would be germany if they didn`t adopt rome(italian) wholesale in long past . would be they living in forest? and where would you be if you wouldn`t adopt this?

abcd, Audi won Le mans *five* times with their gasoline powered R8. Toyota tried long and hard to win at Le Mans but failed.

Today's people are the same as yesterday's people. For example, the people that win the Nobel Prizes in science today come from the same group that produced the vast majority of Nobel prize science winners which is the same group that developed almost all of modern math and science over the last 500 years.

where would be the rest of western europe without adopting greeks science - living in forest like thay did then? science was transfering over whole europe . japan - isolated island . coming back to cars e.g. wankel rotary engine - dr wankel and his team couldn`t do his engine working properly and reliable what mazda did ...

Prior to European renaissance (ie; the dark ages) there was Islamic Golden Age where knowledge was later made available to Europe. Then they start to colonize and monopolize trade, spoiling the peaceful trading among the arabs, Indians, Southeast Asia and Chinese.

Persia and Egypt were perhaps the earliest great human civilization ; where they are now?

Don't be so proud. Life is a circle.

We all came from Africa. or monkey if you prefer.

Nobody is calling u racist. Just asking for Respect for Others.

( Respect is Due [ to GTR ] ) quoting UK Evo mag

Eurocentric is now not so relevant. Now its about globalisation.
That's why people are wearing, drink, eat, speak, drive what ever they like.

Japan is such a densely populated country. You just have to understand their reason and that is their right. Conditions not the same everywhere. Every country has strict immigration policy. You cant tell others what is right for them.
Its not eurocentric anymore, remember?
_______

If you read UK's Evo and CAR mags, The GTR beaten those cars- you know that ! its in this blog. ( I dont mean races- the car just launched)
Also the nurburgring lap times.

The old GTR did race with ferraris and porsche in the Japan Super GT. of course, by your opinion that don't seem to count. I'm sure those porsche / ferrari team were not really racing to win. And its not a fair race coz they dont win.

Not sure if the GTR will compete this year Le Mans.... in France......( cos this one you will acknowledge )

TurboSpyder rather think about factory supported racing teams . Japan Super GT is local touring car racing , i don`t know is it supported by manufacturers or no supported . international touring car racing (now WTCC) have manufacturers teams . in early 90`s skyline gt-r was racing in touring car racing with other manufacturer supported teams (as i know).
