Nissan GT-R lapped Nurburgring in 7:35 - beats SLR McLaren
So are you sick of the Nissan GT-R coverage yet? Well to bad because we’re not. Motor Trend is now reporting that when the GT-R was lapping the Nurburgring, Nissan engineers recorded the best lap time at 7:35.

Reliable sources told Motor Trend that the Nissan GT-R beat the Porsche 996 GT2, Porsche 977 Turbo and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. The 7:35 time of the Nissan GT-R is one second slower than the ...

As awesome as this car is, I just don't see many people rushing out to spend $67,000 on a Nissan?

I hope I'm wrong.

They should've just badged it as an Infiniti.

What's more is the 7:35 laptime is based on entry level spec. It should shake off another 3 seconds for Evo spec of 530 hp.

I wonder if your neighborhood Nissan dealers are taking pre-orders yet. This may be a good opportunity to make some quick $$$$$. With this "hype" (or halo) surrounding the GT-R,
at least for 1-2 years, there will be a waiting list.

BTW, I am sure this news also have Honda NSX folks really disturbed. What are they going to do? If they want to sell a $100K NSX, it has better be capabe of beating GT-R.... How about LF-A from Lexus?

lexus has nothing to worry about, in the same way that porsche doesnt care what bmw or audi do.

but youre right, the nsx is nowhere to be seen. honda will have to figure something out, because how embarassing would it be for a V6TT to be faster than a V10.

What are you guys talking about? A turbo 911 is much quicker and more powerful than a DB9, but that doesn't stop Aston from getting 170,000 large. A turbo V6 compared to a less powerful V12. I know, I know, were talking Aston not Honda/Acura, but you get the point of your narrowminded thinking.

Are you serious? Aston Martin was sold by Ford because Ford is doing terrible. Ford sold Aston Martin because it would catch for a premium price. AM is doing fine.

I wonder if this will single handedly elevate the must have factor of any Nissan over Toyotas. Which (in addition to bad Consumer Reports press) will finally knock Toyota down a few notches.

I love the GT-R but hate the SLR, so this comes as no surprise to me. I don't see how they could've executed the SLR McLaren any worse... they made it far too expensive, it doesn't handle well, it's big and heavy, it's not fast enough and the SL65 demolishes it for half the price.

It's as fast as a Carrera GT in a straight line, its as fast around the track as a Lambo Murcielago and as comfertable as a Mercedes SL.

But it is expensive yeah.

I agree the SLR could have been better, but in flat-black paint treatment it looks a lot better, kind of a Batmobile vibe to it:

http://autopia.org/forum/hot-tub/90407-flat-black-mercedes-slr.html

The GT-R is still a superior vehicle however.

I think you forgot the point of the SLR. Its a tribute to the old SLR while immersing itself in luxury as a tourer.

Its meant for the privileged, aka those who don't care about prices. and I believe it tops out at 212mph. If I am not mistaken, thats 20mph faster than the GT-R.

Well the SLR does have presence, the GT-R is still to be proven. You see a SLR on the street, its hard not to trip over your foot. Granted, that presence costs you a cool 300k

By "fast" I really meant acceleration, sorry. It's out of its depth, even in the $50K-150K segment, with the Z06, GT-R and 911 Turbo all beating it.

I still don't see the point. I don't care how "privileged" its buyers are. The original SLR deserves a much better tribute.

I mean, seriously! Would you pass up four loaded R8s for one SLR Roadster? Or an R8, an F430 Spyder, an S550, an X5 4.8i and a Maserati Quattroporte?

"Well the SLR does have presence, the GT-R is still to be proven."

Oh, please! We all know the GT-R will be amazing.

The SLR hasn't exactly proven itself, either. It's tragically flawed and not exactly the poster child of most car magazines.

For all those super-rich people--don't you want to trade in your SLR for a new Phantom Drophead? For an F430 Scudiera, if you love to drive? For an R8 or 911 Turbo, if you want performance AND luxury? There is just no way I would ever buy it.

A few months back there were times of 7:32 showing up for the Nissan. Now like then, I find it very difficult to believe that a 473hp, est.3400lbs car could come within 2 secs. of a 2900lbs 600 plus hp Zonda F that cost 500k. If they really are going to offer more than one level of the GT R, maybe this posted time is of the higher HP offering. I really hait to sound like a "doubting Thomas" because I really like this car.

golfer, i believe you are correct. the variation in times are wide. personally, i believe the faster times are achieved by future variants of the gtr, namely v-spec and possibly something higher. as far as my own group of friends looking to eventually get a gtr, we will most likely wait for the v-spec version.

You guys got it all wrong. The GT-R beat the SLR, but not the SLR 722. So that's an unfair comparsion.

The SLR competes with the Caddy XLR and G37/350Z.
The SLR 722 competes with the XLR V-series, Viper and GT-R.

And Paris Hilton said the SLR is the "fastest" car she ever driven, not the GT-R. That's why she said that she kept on getting pulled over for speeding.

I hate to be the "wet blanket" here, but no matter how fast/quick a car is--it should be at least good looking, if not gorgeous. For me the GT-R is difficult to look at, I think it is one of the worst styling jobs in recent memory. I guess the Aztec looks worse, but I can't think of another modern car, let alone a GT, sports car or super car, that looks as bad as the GT-R.
Kudo's to Nissan for building, and for many years, a giant slayer--and this latest iteration is stupendous from all accounts--but couldn't they have made it good looking too?

I love these comparisons! Cause they are absolutely pointless. These lap time are nothing but PR hype.

Put Schumacher in my dodge and I guarantee He can lap Nordschleife faster that I am driving a 599. My point is unless the lap times are done with the same driver under the same conditions. People can claim whatever they want.

By the way, I am by no means saying the R35 is slow, I am simply stating those reports are pointless. They are pretty much created exclusively for fanboys to rave on their fanboy sites.

so its not like there is John Doe behind the wheel of the Porsche and Schumacher in charge of the GTR. Now granted the the same driver would be able to test more acurately but there wouldnt be a great significance in my opinion

The GTR is all about 'Form following Function'. That in itself is the greatest beauty. The rest is subjective. The GTR doesn't aim to be superficially pretty just to satisfy a few individual and shallow tastes (the EL34's of the world). It is what it is, makes no apologies about anything and will GUN all others down for sheer ability, when push comes to shove.
I am a visual effects artist, I design motion picture VFX environments for a living and every line in the GTR speaks to me- of clarity, simplicity and function dictating design. To those of you who look to find beauty in puerile comparisons with supercar forms, and then condemn the GTR as ugly, I don't have much to say. Beauty is innate- and its one reason why the GTR won't age overnight the way the 996 Porsche did.

It's not difficult to look up the reported Nordschleife lap times rather than relying on hearsay:

7:38 - Nissan GT-R, 473PS/1739kg, Toshio Suezaki, (Edmunds insideline, Oct 2007)
7:40 - Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, 626PS/1768kg, Klaus Ludwig (AutoBild, July 2004)

So we have 2 different drivers, on two different days, with different tires, and most likely different traffic on the circuit, putting in two impressive times. The SLR is three years older, has oodles more luxury equipment, is rwd, and costs much more. The GT-R is entirely new, has relatively less luxury equipment, is AWD, and costs a lot less. Luxury 2wd versus cutting-edge awd.

...and you argumentative brats are slinging mud at each other over two bloody seconds? Two seconds is NOTHING on the Nordscleife. We're contrasting $100 chianti and $30 amber ale here, folks -- both do the trick. Please quit your stupid fanboy talk, there is more than one way to achieve an impressive result.

I'll take the SLR on saturday and the GT-R sunday. You can have the alternate car on the alternate day.

I mean, why don't these people argue that a 30k Evo will sprint 0-60 faster than a Maybach 57s? They are both Sedans, "sporty".

"The shifting is done via a direct, twin-clutch system. One clutch handles the odd gears and another clutch handles the even ones. Shifts take 0.2 seconds. There are BorgWarner triple-cone synchronizers for all gears. Another shaft runs forward from that transaxle to send power to the front wheels. Below 25 mph the torque split is 50/50, above that, under normal driving, the split is 40/60. But it can split up to 2/98 under hard acceleration, which was what we were giving it."

Not sure about this... 0,2 seconds to shift? That's about 200ms which is SLOW for a DSG gearbox. Porsche's Tiptronic shifts in about 200ms-400ms (and Porsche is working on a 7-speed DSG for a long time now...), the new gen ZF gearboxes does it in under 100ms. Ferrari is currently at 60ms, BMW at 80Ms, VAG is by far the quickest: 6 ms for the dry clutch 7-speed DSG and about 8 ms for the Veyron. But nobody will notice the difference...

I'll be frank, i am always a fan of the underdog, and nissan gtr is the underdog that producers of gt2s, srl mclarens, and gallardos, and all other well established sports car companies probably did not take seriously. It fills my heart to see the underdog rising up to the challenge and giving the big boys a scare run for the performance figures. Should be an awesome car.

saying all sports cars are in the same competition is like saying all sedans are in the same competition.
