Late last week, the list of finalists for the 2011 World Car of the Year was narrowed down from 39 entries to these three vehicles: the 2011 Audi A8, the BMW 5 Series and the electric Nissan Leaf.

The Leaf actually gets twice the love, as it's the only vehicle with the chance to capture more than one title. In the 2011 World Green Car category, only the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt and the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition remain in the race for the title. Sixty-six jurors, with assistance from three "green experts," settled on the trio of World Green Car finalists. In early February, six contenders remained in the hunt for the title. However, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Smart ForTwo Electric Drive and the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell did not make it past the final round of cuts.

The winners of the World Car of the Year and World Green Car awards will be announced at the 2011 New York Auto Show on April 21.
