Nissan To Cut Vehicle Weight By 15% To Lift Fuel Efficiency
Nissan will cut the weight of its vehicles by an average of 15% over the next seven years as it seeks to improve fuel efficiency, according to reports.
The weight reduction will be gauged against the automaker's 2005 model year, the Nikkei business daily reported Wednesday. Nissan will seek to trim the weight by rethinking vehicle design, using light weight materials and encouraging parts suppliers to also pursue the new efficiency targets.

They better do it with aluminum and carbon fiber isntead of using thinner steel.

EnnNorack...
I ga-run-tee you they won't use thinner steel...they will use plastic. Think Saturn pre-2007.
...then apply it to the entire auto industy in the coming years.

Plastic is made from petroleum, wouldn't that be defeating the purpose of using less oil.

rocker...very true
...if the auto industy cared about using less oil, which they don't. It's not their job to care. Thats our job. If we want to be oil concious, then our buying trends will dictate what the auto industy will produce in the future. At least that's the way its supposed to happen in theory. Just like they really don't care about the environment. The only reason they care about MPG's is to make the public think they are green and keep buying hybrid SUV's...which really aren't that green.
Remember MPG's for sales is what it's ALL about to automanufacturers.
On a side note...you think plastics being made from petroleum is bad...watch this little slight of hand. The corn being grown to create American E85... is a hybrid blend that requires 3 times the amount of petrochemical pesticide as regular corn...and still requires diesel running machinery to move the crop through the entire process of planting all the way to filling the tanks at your local gas station.
Yet again don't see how that's really green.

When nerly all mnaufacturers are after Horsepower and cars are getting heavier and heavier. This a good step, hopfully others will follow too.
Stop this horsepower war and start a war of Fuel efficiency, better safety and lower weight.

They did that in the '70s and '80s and look at the crap we had to drive back then. Omni/Horizon, Chevette, 4 cyl Mustangs, any Renault, Yugo, where does the list stop.

"Nissan To Cut Vehicle Weight By 15%...and rename company, Lotus"
Alot of companies are about to do this due to the new CAFE standards. Expect noise dampening material to be reduced or used 'sparingly' as well.
