Nissan and Toyota perform best in SUV crash ratings, GM fails big time
According to a new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, while many midsized SUVs received “Good” frontal crash ratings, midsized SUVs lag in side impact safety.

The IIHS puts the SUVs in a series of tests including a front impact test that involves an impact at 40 mph, a side impact test where are a moving barrier strikes the SUV at 31 mph and a rear impact test that measures whiplash protection when the vehicles is struck 20 mph.

The biggest loser according to the results from the IIHS study was...

if safety is a major concern, then i would say the japanese are best at it. and this just doesnt relate to automobiles. japanese safety robotic's and innovations lead the way.

but as monty said the 4-runner is running on old structure. mostly body refreshments as they said. but one thing to note is that the Japanese had good point earnings in these tests for their side impact curtains.

as for GM, their just losing out big time every aspect of the business. they are on a decline and only have themselves to blame.

"as for GM, their just losing out big time every aspect of the business. they are on a decline and only have themselves to blame."

I disagree. As a whole, their new products are--gasp!--as good as their Toyota competitors. Ford is the one that needs help. GM knows exactly what they're doing. In fact, yesterday I read a four-seasons wrap-up of the Toyota Camry LE V6 on Edmunds. They noted that it had an unusually high amount of interior build quality problems for a Toyota- and that its number of mis-aligned panels was comparable with their long-term Pontiac Solstice.

Well, the Trailblazer and company are going on 7 years old. Still no excuse though.

The 4 Runner's last major redesign was in 1999. They have only freshened the bodywork since. Not sure that 7years old is an excuse.

4Runner was actually last redesigned for the 2003 model year, at least here in the states. The 3.4L V6 was replaced with the 4.0L V6. A 4.7L V8 was offered as well.

the trailblazer wasn't pretty refined or comfy. plus for a year, its deprieciation drops like a rock and is dated (as well as the interior). I'd rather take a 4runner but there are better offerings from GM than the trailblazer. dunno why this car still exists.

Hyundai, learn to read mate. ? when following a sentence results in it being a question, simple concept.

At least with the Jeep it looks like something torso side airbags could remedy. Funny that the article barely mentions that the Japanese vehicles fail miserably in the rear impact test.

According to the atricle none were perfect. Japanese still need to work on their seats and rear impact and Chevrolets next midsize must be improved or its a waste. I am sure GM will improve the next Trailblazer...long in tooth as is.

I am actually pleased with the Japanese auto industry. They helped increase the total industries quality and dependability. I am sure the auto industry would not be were it is at today if not for Japan's auto industry. Competition breeds better products...

The TrailBlazer was from GM's POS cost-cutting era. The new crossovers will probably do much better.

You guys should read the CNNMoney acticle (the original).
It is talking about "truck-based" SUVs.
Therefore, a lot of SUVs we are familiar with are not included
in testing. Also "mid-sized" if I might add....

Is the Jeep really "truck based?" Is is a unibody construction rather than body-on-frame.
