Nissan chases VW/Audi with a 3-liter car by 2010, Plans Altima Hybrid for 2007
...
The “Nissan Green Program 2010” plan includes launching a “three-liter car” that will run 100km on three liters of fuel. The planned Japanese launch date for the auto is 2010.
[this will compete with the Audi A2 and VW Lupo TDIs for best fuel economy]
...
In 2007, Nissan will introduce its first hybrid car, the U.S. market Altima sedan, which utilizes a hybrid system developed outside the company.
[anyone know whose hybrid system they're using?]

The nissan hybrid is partly madeup on toyota synergy hybrid technology. But nissan claim that they will venture off with its own hybrid technology by 2010.

Since the next Prius tested at 113mpg or 40km/L, that makes it a 2.5L car doesn't it?
Maybe not since imperial and American gallons are different. Sounds nice though.

Sounds like Japanese figures, where driving is stop-and-go, and you cannot go any distance in any direction.
But in North America, where people drive long distances, Diesel is much better (except for the folks who just drive in the city ... and there's certainly plenty of them)

Toyota has made no secret that it offers it's hybrid tech to anyone interested in using it. Toyota also has no quam in purchasing technology developed outside of the company, Such as Isuzu for diesel engine tech and Daihatsu for small car platforms.

Yes, that's true.
And their first twin-cam heads (Corolla GTS) came from Yamaha, and they bought 6 million TDI engines from VW for the Yaris in Europe.
But that's just smart business.
I finally figured Toyota out:
Let the other companies spend R&D $$$ on CREATING new technology.
Then they pick it up and spend R&D $$$ on how to build it cheap but reliable at the same time.
Although I find their cars boring, I think that from a business perspective Toyota they are brilliant.
A Toyota is a safe purchase (if you avoid the low-end junk, like the Tercel) and they know that us "Auto Enthusiasts" are a small percentage of the entire market.

THere is nothing like purchasing anything from Dhaitsu. It's a subsidiary of Toyota like Lexus, scion and Hino.
The new Dhaitsu Terios is just a rebadged New Toyota Rush and the Dhaitsu sirion is a reskinned version of Yaris/Aurion.

Dieselrules,
That's why BMW/Audi and MB had to go mass market with their entry level cars. There aren't enough enthusiasts to keep them in business unless they paid about $300,000 for each car.
