Once we get past the holidays we know it's that time to head to what is arguably considered the BEST auto show, the Detroit Auto Show. Every single year we find ourselves making the trek to Cobo Hall, some years more exciting -- or depressing -- than others.

But if there's one thing we don't forget, thanks to our vast archive of photos, it's the memories of the years gone by.

And now that we're digging deep this year for our preview gallery, it's almost unbelievable how many concept cars didn't make it to production. Hell, even if you take a look a close look at some of the concepts, you'll note that some of the design elements and characteristics never transferred into reality.

Looking back, it's clear that those were the good old days when going to a big-time auto show was almost like going to an art gallery's opening where you would see "art for art's sake." I would say that's where the real innovation was birthed.

In the past couple of years we've noticed that the outrageous and zany concepts that once were don't happen anymore. Now it's moreso about gauging reactions and the finance department making sure every nickel and dime is accounted for.

But to pay homage to the great concepts that have come and went, we've dived into the Agents' vault and grabbed the creme de la creme for you.
