When you think about the most competitive areas in the automotive battle royale, it's hard to contest that there's a tougher segment than your basic, mid-size sedan.

That's where some of the biggest sellers are.

THINK: Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Honda Accord. This is their playland.

Now anyone that's been keen on Subaru should have noticed the brand making a big push to up its product competitiveness. Personally, I've seen these cars go through complete hell and keep on ticking. That's why I advised a car-abusing family member to snap up a 2009 Legacy back when it was new.

If you're skeptical of the class leaders, then I advise you give this Japanese player a shot. As an all-new product for 2015, the Legacy gets a lowdown base price of $21,695. If you want to get more bells, whistles and power you can step up to a six-cylinder variant — the 3.6 R — for a base price of $29,595.
