The 2008 model year doesn't begin for a couple of months, but you can see the new, lower Environmental Protection Agency fuel-economy figures now.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Web site, www.fueleconomy.gov , has switched from the old mileage ratings to '08 numbers in its Find and Compare Cars function.

The new numbers more accurately reflect real-world driving, meaning the window-sticker ratings shoppers use to compare cars drops 1 m.p.g. to 2 m.p.g. for most gasoline-powered models.

The change for hybrids is more drastic, about a 15% to 20% decrease. The Toyota Prius' fuel economy dropped from 60 m.p.g. to 48 m.p.g. for city driving.
