President Barack Obama told more than 1,600 current and hourly autoworkers on Tuesday that if Republicans had been in charge they would have left the auto industry "out to dry."

In a speech to members of the United Auto Workers Community Action Program, Obama rebutted criticism of bailing out General Motors and Chrysler by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and defended the union.

"If we had turned our backs on you; if America had thrown in the towel; GM and Chrysler wouldn't exist today.
