The governor of Oregon, Gov. Ted Kulongoski, wants to put the eye of government in all vehicles and tax them by mileage driven, rather than the conventional state gasoline tax used there and in other states, like Kansas.

Now, in addition to all the personal privacy issues and potential for abuse this nutty idea raises, it also puts the hammer again to the beleaguered transportation industry.

Agree wholeheartedly, and that's saying something. Because a requirement to submit odometer readings (which is essentially what this is) is far more Orwellian than anything the Patriot Act has allowed......

ct has mandatory emissions testing every 2 years. an odometer reading is recorded as part of the test. how hard would it be to take a reading every year?
when a car is sold through a dealer, a document with an odometer reading is signed.
currently property taxes are collected yearly, based on the vehicle value in the kbb book. that is taking a hit due to the drop in vehicle values.

I use a "Sunpass" to drive on increasingly common toll roads and express lanes throughout Florida. As I sail down the highway, my speed and location are measured by the state of Florida periodically. A picture is taken, as well. The state also verifies my odometer annually.

What the governor is doing seems a good "user fee" solution. Those who use the roads the most, pay the most, and those who don't drive, save money.

Seems pretty market driven and capitalist, to me.

Anyway, since Bush just passed Chávez on the socialist scale, by taking over the banking system (forget what he did to the bill of rights), seems odd to complain about big brother from anyone else.

This is all about plug-in hybrids and electric cars...

Electricity is not part of the gas tax, but more and more cars are going to be using electricity as a "fuel" so if we don't do anything then tax revenue will suffer and we wont have money in the transportation budget to maintain and build new roads.

If the gas tax is switched to a mileage tax, then we don't have this problem. Also, we no longer have to worry about using home-grown fuels (such as vegetable-oil) not being taxed. Its a much simpler system as well, since now we have one point of collection, the DOT, rather than thousands of gas stations all over the place.

however... if you do 99% of your driving on your own private land, such as farmers/ranchers, then this would suck. You wouldn't be putting any wear and tear into the public roads but you would still have to pay as though you did.

If your driving style is like mine, and you use way more gas than necessary to get from point "a" to "b", you will likely save money by being taxed per mile, rather than gallon. Ha ha ha. Just looking for the silver lining. OTOH, in all likelyhood, they will not reduce fuel tax, you know ;)

If he did, it would be a lot better than spending all his time trying to become a unitary executive. Though that was Cheney's idea, not Bush's. The best decision Bush ever made was to make Cheny his vice president. It pretty much guaranteed that no one would assassinate him. Cheny as president.... yikes.

Although I like Obama, I don't like the government controlling the auto I drive.

They already slowed down the economy by manipulating oil. They knocked the econmy out of balance in doing so.

a Huge percentage of capital was taken out of circulation, and out of the economy.

Now the money sits in the banks of Oil Companies.

Laugh out loud funny... So if you are a tree hugging enviro-mental type and drive a Prius... you save all that money on gas, but still get hammered by the taxman. Of course that's probably the point - they are loosing revenue because of the fuel savers out there. Just wait - if you dare to find ways to save more fuel, they'll tax your bicycle miles next.

Why not cut politician's wages to 10% above the average American! Then lets hear what there plan will be, I guarantee they will change there minds!In Canada BC, only around 2%Gas tax goes to road repair and building roads, and the other 98% goes to, government. It's of no surprise that this is what they want.

- I disagree. Harvard Law and Columbia must at least give a person wages that are 10% over the average American? Heck... I make 10% more than the average American. I don't even have a college degree. With your suggestion I'd make more than the president.

Politicians are generally out of touch of what average people live on and the usual daily struggle, We all know that they will never take a pay cut, but that would be great if they had to live on the average persons wage while they are in power, And they could collect the rest after they are out, I guarantee the average wage would double in a few years!
