2009 BMW 3-Series Full Details and Specs

The 2009 3 Series Sedan and Sport Wagon is poised to maintain its market leadership with updated exterior and interior styling, new technologies, enhanced ergonomics and, as previously announced, the U.S. introduction of BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance in the form of the 335d Sedan.

Highlights.

•    The new BMW 3 Series Sedans and Sports Wagons, already and always leaders in their class, widen their lead in driving dynamics, premium quality and innovative technology.
•    These vehicles combine unique BMW elegance with a driving experience that’s widely imitated, yet really inimitable.

•    A brand-new twin-turbo diesel engine, thoroughly BMW in its performance and character, powers the new 335d Sedan and expands the scope of BMW EfficientDynamics.
•    Subtle freshening of exterior design features a new front end, more dynamic profile, and wider appearance at the rear. Headlights and taillights are new, yet present a typically BMW look, innovative lighting technology and 3-dimensional effects.

•    Refinement of interior design and amenities includes new colors and materials. Overall design of interior reflects and complements the distinctive exterior design. Among functional updates are ergonomically enhanced placement of power-window controls for the driver and new, expanded storage possibilities.

•    New generation of BMW iDrive, available in 3 Series in combination with optional Navigation system: ergonomically optimized iDrive controller with function selection and activation via turn, push and tilt motions; new direct-select keys; more Programmable Memory Keys than before. The newly enhanced Navigation system offers greater functionality.

•    BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance: all-new inline 6-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine with an impressive array of new features for high performance, high fuel efficiency and clean exhaust. To achieve these targets, this aluminum powerplant applies common-rail, high-pressure direct fuel injection with piezo injectors; 2-stage turbocharging; exhaust particulates filter; and Selective Catalytic Reduction exhaust after-treatment to reduce NOx.  Displacing 3.0 liters, this truly advanced engine enables BMW to introduce diesel power in all 50 U.S. states; it produces 265 hp and an amazing peak torque of 425 lb-ft.; 0-60 mph in 6.0 sec. with 6-speed automatic transmission. EPA mileage ratings have not been finalized, but are expected to set new “mile”-stones in the simultaneous achievement of performance with fuel economy.

•    Continuation of two other trailblazing BMW inline 6-cylinder performance concepts in the other 3 Series models: the 3.0-liter naturally aspirated unit in 328i models with weight-saving magnesium/aluminum composite construction and Valvetronic induction technology for 230 hp; and the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine of 335i models with its direct fuel injection (piezo injectors here, too) and large-volume dual exhaust system. This unit delivers 300 hp, and a peak torque that is remarkable not only for its quantity (300 lb-ft.) but for the range over which it’s at the driver’s disposal (1400 to 5000 rpm). Both of these gasoline engines have been acclaimed widely for their respective qualities: for the 328i unit, silky and strong performance with remarkable fuel economy; for the 335i, dramatically sporty performance with fuel economy that’s notable in view of the power.

•    BMW’s  acclaimed xDrive all-wheel drive is featured in the newly named 328i and 335i xDrive Sedans and 328i xDrive Sports Wagon. This intelligently engineered AWD system steplessly varies the torque split between front and rear wheels to enhance not only traction, but also agility and stability on grippy, as well as slippery road surfaces.

•    Comprehensive safety concept with extremely rigid body structure; carefully defined “force paths” that lead and distribute collision forces optimally through the structure; targeted application of high-strength steels and deformation elements; six airbags including front side-impact and front/rear head protection; new Active front head restraints.

•    The 2009 models are: 328i Sedan and Sports Wagon; 328i xDrive Sedan and Sports Wagon; 335i, 335i xDrive and 335d Sedans. The 3 Series also encompasses Coupes and retractable-hardtop Convertibles; these continue with less extensive updates for 2009.

Star, we get it, you hate BMW. Why do you feel the need to bash the brand in every article? Are you that insecure? Does BMW's success bother you that much?

I feel sorry for someone who thinks like you. You're way beyond pathetic.

So do us a favor and shut your trap so the rest of us who actually enjoy cars can read comments without coming across your bullsh*t.

Staar,

BMW is not an econobox company. You must be a Japanese fanboy because any German car enthusiast can recognize BMW as a premium automaker. The 3 series is the benchmark in its class for handling and comfort. In an "ENTRY LEVEL" sports sedan there is very little road noise and the ride comfort is firm but not uncomfortable.

It takes only a troll to make quick judgments but please just stop it with your hate towards BMW. If you comment on it with words of hatred you must 'hate to love' something about a BMW.

ANYWAYS!

The revised tail lights make it look so much better. Also the cleared out front lamps look 10x better as well. I knew they would turn it around.

Omg Staar,

I was going to write that you are pathetic, but Chip already did that.

Same can be addressed to you, MadibaP.

Do you think Lexus or any other auto brand would appreciate "passionate" supporters / BMW haters like you? Think again!

Didn't we already go through this constipated turtle slide show?

oh and wonder why there are BMW haters? just look at people who own them :) I would say a lot of them
have attained that elusive combination of disdain, money, attitude, disregard for others, and self-importance, you won't consistently find with any other brand.

"New generation iDrive" just tells me that it's a newer version of what is conceptually a bad thing. BMW should rest its case with the fabulous inherently balanced in-line 6-cylinder engines available in the 3 and 5 series.

There will never be a good iDrive. The whole concept of having to fiddle with menu-driven controls in a high-speed vehicle while driving is unsafe and takes the fun out of driving. Each function should have its own stand-alone control.

BTW, I note that doors are not protected by a side molding against parking lot dings.

I really never liked the sedan and touring, and the updated version looks like BMW is trying to hard to make the car more attractive, but they fail. It never looked good.It never will. BMW should make a new model very soon. The coupe got style and look nice, i like that one a lot.

I think the 5 series is the most modern sleek looking car in it's class. It makes the rest look boxy, or at least when it came out.

I have a E90 and I should add that it needs the Sports Package with the 18" wheels and rubber. Without said package it looks awkward and 'under-rimmed' With the 18s and 255s on the rear, it looks perfect.

BMW was supposed to increase the width at the wheels slightly. I wonder if they did.

Needless to say, my wife's .09 will have the ZSP option just like out '07 and old 06 330.

I have spoken. So let it be.

I have driven the 335d. It is an amazing car. Very quiet and smoothe. No noise from the engine typical with a diesel. The torque is really amazing to feel. Can't wait until this car comes out. Fuel savings is minimal so far as I been told. Sould be a blast for all.

Well two good things I can see here.

1) They finally stuck with LED taillamps. I would expect that to be a key feature on pretty much all luxury cars nowadays. I know they use them on hybrids a lot to save on battery usage, but why not put them on all models. It's about time they did this, instead of just on the convertibles a gen ago.

2) Dual exhaust. Wow, that only took about 5-6 years after everyone else realized how much more aesthetically pleasing it is to see the twin pipes tucked into the bumper. Much better than looking like a Camry 4cyl. with the little pipe sticking off the side, unpolished. I know they used teh twin pipe muffler forever on the 3, but regardless if it makes sense or not, dual exhausts just look better.

1. LED tails were available on convertibles AND coupes from 2004 on.

2. Twin exhausts has been on the 335i since its release.

I'm not what you would consider a fan of BMW but I can appreciate them for being pure driving machines. Aesthetically speaking, I don't feel that they have ever been what I would call beautiful (except for the old 6 series and the new 3 series coupe). But they have a definite and strong identity... probably the strongest visual identity of any car in the world.

I do think they are over doing the front grilles these days... especially on the X6 and this new 3-series. But the proportions of this car are really nice.

What is it supposed to be encrusted with gold or wood trim to make it look good? Even if the speaker mesh is flush with the door you still need a cheap and cost effective way to cover it. I dont know what you are expecting.

Perhaps a more elegant way of dealing with the issue such as what you see in nearly every other car in the class from the Audi A4 to the Infiniti G35.

These look like someone cut round holes into the doors and put in after market speaker. Looks very out of place with the rest of the cabin.

The tail/head lights do have a better flow to them. Overall the key updates should help the 3er out with an aggressive look. I wasn't looking for a complete redesign. After all, it's just a face lift 'till the CS goes into prod. I would have like to seen them change the window control under the door handle. Where they have it placed is quite awkward.

Does anyone know if there planning on putting the diesel in the coupe?

Also the MPG in the press release is much lower than the numbers from Europe, whats the deal?

AudiphileAudiphile - 7/17/2008 1:55:32 PM

You do have a point about the mileage figures. The European test is different from the EPA test. In addition, as the U.S. gallon is only 83% the size of the (British) Imperial gallon, thus the European mpg figures will be larger than the U.S. mpg figures.

There is another factor consider regarding EPA mileage figures for diesel engines. The EPA methodology seems to favor gasoline engines over diesels, resulting in understated mileage figures for diesel engines.

I notice the photos show a 335D Wagon, but the press release specifically leaves out this model for the U.S. market. That's just too bad, because those who would buy a diesel are the same sort who would buy a wagon, and the marriage of these 2 features is perfect for the wagon buyer. I hope they bring the 335D wagon for 2010.

Are you insane? I hate the 2006-2008 Milk-Mustache Grill. And the 2006-2008 taillights are about as Special as a set of Hyundai tiallights. Now we're getting LEDs which looks 1000% better than the 19th century incandecent bulbs of the 2006-2008. And the sedan finally loses the garish Orange Reflectors around the headlights.

There would not be a sport sedan segment if not for the 3 series...The competition has been gaining over the years but numbers dont lie when it comes down to overall success. Sport sedans have become the bread and butter for all high line manufacturers. i.e. 3,C,A4,G,IS They are all good cars, it comes down to personal preference.

The BMW 3 series is a great driver's car. Its driving dynamics are at the top of the class but sadly its looks are average. Worst parts about its looks are the rear/tail lights.

I was really looking forward to BMW updating the looks of the rear lights. But sorry to say that BMW has utterly disappointed me with the new light design for the 2009 model.

I believe the 3 series coupe (with 5-spoke wheels) is one of the best looking cars available today and one of the things that make the 3 series couple look so good are the simple and yet stylish tail lights. I wish BMW put the coupe lights on the sedan.

I was considering the 3 series but not anymore. Looks do play a big part in my decision to buy cars. I am most likely going to go with the upcoming Infiniti G37 - doesn't quite have the 10/10 driving dynamics of the 3 series, but the G37 is no slouch either. Plus, the G37 looks better inside out, in my opinion, than the 3 series and a nicely equipped G37 is much easier on the bottom line than the 3 series.
