Official info on the Audi A5/S5
The S5, meanwhile, features a V8, presumably the venerable 4.2L unit, though Audi doesn't mention its displacement. It does, however, reveal the S5 will produce 354bhp and peak torque of 325 ft-lbs. at 3,500 rpm. A six-speed manual and quattro all-wheel drive come standard of course, and help the S5 reach 62 mph in 5.1 seconds, so we're guessing it will hit 60 in 5.0 seconds or a bit under. In addition to the more powerful engine, the S5 benefits from a sharper suspension and larger brakes. Read Article

I LOVE the new Audi A5/S5.
It will definately give BMW some great competition.
However, Audi MUST price this car right.
If priced a tad under the 3-Coupe, the A5/S5 will sell possibly just as much as the BMW.

The regular A5 has more performance than the 328(xi) coupe and the S5 is likely to be positioned above 335i coupe. But the difference between the two shouldn't be very big.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 2/25/2007 9:09:23 AM
-2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Well that is interesting news. So the S5 will probably be slower and more expensive than the all-wheel drive 335xi Coupe that's coming out later this year then.

No, the S5 should be quicker than the 335.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 2/25/2007 2:22:16 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
at 4.8-4.9 seconds 0-60 the 335i coupe and sedan are already quicker than the S4, and BMW expects the xi version to be 0.1 seconds quicker than the rear drive versions because of the extra traction on launch. So... the S5 will most likely be slightly slower and more expensive than the 335xi coupe.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 2/25/2007 2:31:27 PM
-3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
btw audirevolution, what makes you think pricing the A5/S5 just under the 3-series coupe would result in it selling as well? It's probably a given it'll be priced under the 3-series coupe, "just under the BMW price" is how Audi prices all their cars except the RS models. Audi is the German Infiniti in that regard. If they priced it higher it wouldn't sell at all, and pricing the A4 "just under the BMW" hasn't resulted in 3-series sedan sales figures. You want the most logical reason Audi might sell close to the same number of A5's as BMW does 3-coupes? It's not about price it's about volume -- BMW doesn't build nearly as many coupes as sedans so it's a lower number Audi would be trying to match.

chewychewy - 2/25/2007 2:34:44 PMView My AgentSpace

Audi rates the current S4 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. It rates the S5 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. American magazines have produced consistent times of 5 seconds for the S4 in 0-60 mph.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 2/25/2007 3:05:51 PM
-2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
chewy, I've never seen a magazine get 5.0 seconds for the S4, the best time I've ever seen was 5.1 seconds in Car and Driver and that's the only magazine I've seen get it going that fast. The 335i, on the other hand, everyone has gotten 4.8-5.0 seconds with, and again BMW expects the xi to be a tenth of a second quicker. Now it looks like the S4/S5 will be getting a slight bump in power and maybe they're going to be as quick as the 335xi, but as of right now they're behind in performance and higher in price. Simple numbers. I'm not trying to start a fight about it or anything, and if it'll make you feel better I'll say they're equally quick, but at a higher cost for the Audi. Is that better?

jmrA480jmrA480 - 2/25/2007 3:25:11 PM
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
jrob, i am an audi fan , but agree with you. the S5 should have around 380Hp, to make up for the cost over the 335i. i would still take the S5, because of looks alone, but your average car fan would probaly take the 335i.

i would like to see the 335xi time, you say it will be quicker, and it might, but the AWD system will probally add about 300lbs to the car. so it will have better traction but also be heavier.

chewychewy - 2/25/2007 3:43:33 PMView My AgentSpace
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
So Audi says the S5 will be 1/2 second quicker than the S4. The S5 will probably be in the 4.5-5 second range. No need to say that one car is superior becuase it is a tenth quicker in 0-60. If you want that get a Z06, cheap and quick. Anyways, the S6 that is down 65 horsepower and 16,000 dollars on the M5 is just as quick on the race track and has better handling. Take a look.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/virtual/112_0702_luxury_sports_sedan_comparison_vrt/

Audi's Quatro (and the A5 is rumored to have the best Quattro ever) has plenty of benefits even if it is a tenth slower to 60.

The S4 has gotten 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds in a Motor Trend article from a few years ago.

I agree, too, though. Unless the weight comes down, they need to be less conservative with these engines. I know they can squeeze more juice out of them (look at the naturally aspirated RS4!!!), and they SHOULD.

BTW, Audis in Europe are actually priced slightly higher than the competition from BMW and Mercedes, and Audi is the volume leader in the luxury segment.

Everytime I see this car now, the more I get disappointed. The styling looks like the last generation Nissan 240SX, meaning it already looks dated. And the interior would look at home in a GM. That's really too bad.

So the S5 is putting out 354bhp using the 4.2 V8...

That seems slightly underpowered considering both the the S6 and S8 are well over 400. Granted this is a smaller, lighter, more nimble coupe but still, shouldn't this new "hotness" from Audi be a 400+ M3 fighter?

Or is that responsibility to be placed on the RS5?

I thought this car was inbetween the A4 and A6.

I am a busy real estate agent and I don't read everything about cars.

I still love my 2006 lime green VW convertible New Beetle, but it is too small for driving clients around Irvine,Ca and the A5 looks big enough.

The A5 will have a 15-16 cubic feet trunk. I think that would be the largest one in the coupe segment. You can put a lot of signs in that trunk.

el- your comparing the current A4 to the A5, but the the A5 is based on the new B8 A4 platform(which is not out yet), so the new A4(when it comes out) will probally be the same length as the A5

love this car by the way, just wish the S5 had about 380-400, i know the RS5/RS4 is suppose to compete with the M3, but the S4 should be able to out perform the 335i, it will probaly be 15k more.being an Audi guy, i would still would take the S5, i like its looks much better, and performance wise it will be equal if not better, but for someone who likes both Bmw and Audi the same, would probally take the 335i due to its much lower price.

chewychewy - 2/25/2007 3:47:35 PMView My AgentSpace
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
The S5 will not be 15k more expensive than the 335i coupe. If you configure the current S4 and the 335i coupe currently with equal options, the S4 is only about 3.5-4k more expensive.

jmrA480jmrA480 - 2/25/2007 4:02:30 PM

chewy- true but the S5 probally will be 5k more then the S4, so it will be about 8k more not the 15k i said, my error. But like i said i would take the S5, even if it was 15k more, i just like the looks of it 10x better thrn the 335

I would love to know how much power the 2.0T version will produce. I HOPE more than 200hp!

And, I'm a bit jittery over the V6. The 3.2L isn't exactly the most "exciting" engines- and, dating back to the 2.8L, none of the N/A Audi V6s ever have been. It was a mistake for them to get rid of the 2.7T... if they upped the displacement, it could easily overtake 300hp. Hopefully, they'll put a more powerful V6 (think 3.6L) in the US version.

The 3.2 (3.1 actual displacement) gets Valvelift to make 265 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. It also gets 27 MPG combined in the European test (with the multitronic gearbox) This compares very well to BMW's 328 (3 liters) with only 230 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque.

There is no information about the 2.0T FSI on the A5, only the 1.8T FSI was mentioned. I think that neither one will come here on the A5.

the 2.7t would be great, with a chip it will put out 318hp/382lb-ft, for only $600. they have to put a turbo in this, or they will lose alot of the tuning market buyers.

chewy, I hope you realize you're comparing the high-level A5 to the base-level 3 Series. I'm comparing the A5 3.2 to the 335i, and I don't see good results unless the weight comes down. IMO the 2.0T is a much better engine than the 3.2, so hopefully it will be in the 220hp range.

chewychewy - 2/26/2007 12:51:09 AMView My AgentSpace

The 3.2 FSI VL V6 will likely be the only engine on the A5. It slots between the 328 and 335 on performance.

someone on audiworld said he heard news of a possible 3.2 turbo with 300HP+, that would be awesome, but probaly bullshit. The 2.7t is dead, so why not bring a new 6 cylinder turbo, just imagine the tuning capabilities.

joeycjoeyc - 2/27/2007 8:38:14 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
I think there will be a 2.0T too, probably a year later. By then it will have at least 230 hp to compete with the 328i (remember the 2.0T can be tuned to 265 hp like in the S3), but not until the 3.2L is boosted to 300 hp.

i am a audi fan but dont understand it either, I mean the S4 and old M3 were very similiar in power, price and performance, so they did compete. The M3 was faster in a straight line, but the S4 had faster track times. look at all the comparisons , it was the S4 vs. M3 vs. C 32/55 AMG, And the S4 won all of them. the new M3 will be an RS4/RS5 competitor but by the time the M3 comes out the RS4 will already be 2 years old ,and there will probally be news about the B8 RS4 already.(hopefully)

in my mind its
RS>M>S>AMG But you pay a higher price for the RS.

Audi makes S cars for people who want performance but don't want a street racer. That is what the RS line is for. THink about it, I can get a fully loaded S8 for under 100K (less than a typical S-class)

If the S5 reaches 62 in 5.1, expect 4.9/4.8 to 60. And 350hp? Yay.
And the S cars are just powerful, not the best dynamically, but very good none the less.

the S6 is considerably faster than the posted Audi time of 0-62 of 5.1. my wife drives a new ML63 AMG, which MB says will do it in 4.8 seconds, and one of the coolest AMG features is a perforemance timer, so you can see how fast you just went 0-60. anyhoo, needless to say we matched the AMG with my S6 and I edged her by a nose pretty much till 120 mph. we backed off then, and her timer said she did 0-60 in 4.83 seconds. either way, both cars rock. I really like the ML. I think the S5 looks great and certainly will be quick, but I don't think its faster than the S6.

Guys,

Just went to the audiusa.com website. Have any of you noticed the placement of the MMI controls? Some pictures show it in the middle of the console whereas other pics show it at it's regular position behind the gearshift. Wonder which one Audi is going to go with. Doesn't make economical sense to offer to placements.

MMI will be behind the gearshift like on all other MMI models. The one below the radio is not MMI but MMI like controls for A5s without MMI (most likely not coming here)

Anyone know for sure what's about the Audi transmissions lately? They keep changing the names, I'm really confused now.
Will the A5 get the dual-clutch trans(DSG, S tronic now maybe) as the automatic or not? And what's up with those 8 gears? That's CVT! Whatever ... if someone gets it please explain it for the A5 and for the S5 also.

I am interested in hearing everyone's feedback on the reliability of Audi. I was in the market a while back in the $30,000-$40,000 range and shopped BMW, Audi, and Infiniti. I ended up with the Infiniti G based on price, performance, reliabiity. My first choice was the 3 series but I had a number of conversations with BMW owners who said that they were very unreliable and were always at the dealer. I also spoke with a few Audi owners and they had horror stories too tell about their car's reliability issues. I went with the G because I had owned Nissan products before and they were very reliable. Thoughts form Audi/BMW owners?

all these cars are reliable, some more than others. I mean on am on my 3rd audi, and my girlfriend has one too, and not one problem, only time its ever in the shop is for regular maintance, but thats on 4 Audis out of millions that have been sold over the last 9 years. there are gonna be people who have horror stories with any car and there are gonna be people like me who have never had a problem.

i know with Audis', alot of people with the turbo engines tune the shit out of them, with this you could run into a shit load of problems. It depends on how you treat your car.
