Officially Official: 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT

The GM Source appears to have scooped the universe with what is apparently the first official shot of the cleaner, cladding-free 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT. Yes, the GT trim level makes its return to the erstwhile Excitement Division, which is slowly, steadily getting its mojo back. We have no info other than the photo and what little detail The GM Source provides on its site, which sadly doesn't include any tech specs. The '09 Vibe will be officially unveiled at the LA Auto Show, and the GT will be joined by an AWD model as well. The Vibe's mechanical sibling, the Toyota Matrix, will debut at SEMA later this month. We'll update the Vibe info as more information comes to light. Until then, tell us your thoughts on the redesign in the comments.

Wow!

That's a very nice evolution of an already decent looking vehicle...

Handsome and Distinctive!

The site is called AutoSPIES. Here we get the first look at a (somewhat) anticapted new launch, and after a few hours there is one response. Maybe IS-F, M3, "diesels vs. hybrids" or "Audi sales up," should have been added to the headline, as flame wars seem to be the only way to awaken people on this site. I, for one, appreciate this article. I will not likely ever buy a Pontiac, but as a former owner of a Matrix XRS, this excites me. It looks good, nice proportions, clean lines. Cant wait till SEMA to see what Toyota offers. I look forward to Autospies posting the pics (and Toyota will be in the title, ensuring at least 50-60 flaming posts!!)

This looks 100000000000000X better than the incredibly boring Matrix. I thought they were just going to let the Vibe die- but I guess I was wrong. I hope Toyota's refresh (if they give it one) will look as good.

I agree. Kinda Compass-y. I'm interested to see what the Matrix looks like.

An triangular rear window treatment does not constitute one vehicle looking like another, if so...

It also looks like a Mazda3... A Toyota Rav4... A Subaru Impreza... and on and on...

The proportions/detailing/stance is so far different than the (grotesque) compass, that it's hardly worth noting.

Who said it was just the rear window? More than that, I think the proportions are similar. It looks a little dumpy/bottom heavy.

I don't think it looks anything like those other cars you mention, so I guess it's NOT just the rear window treatment. Huh.

Argh! I actually get annoyed by all the "looks like" comments that abound here, and then I went and did it.

Still look forward to seeing what Toyota does with this.

These are interesting FACTS about the Matrix/Vibe:

"2005-GM was ranked second in the critical Customer Service Satisfaction index in multi-line manufacturers last year. Where was Toyota? Fifth place.

-GM's lowest quality-rated vehicle is the Pontiac Vibe, assembled in California by - you guessed it - Toyota."

This appears to be much better by looks alone.

The Vibe is made in Fremont, CA, at NUMMI. NUMMI is a joint-venture, but Toyota does 'run' the plant. I just recently took a job with a new supplier for the Vibe and the '09 Corolla. That is quite interesting about the quality survey though.
