Officially Official: Jetta TDI Arrives In June
At the Chicago Auto Show Volkswagen spokesman Keith Price confirmed that the first new CleanTDI models will be arriving at Volkswagen dealerships in June 2008. Each dealer in United States and Canada will get one example from the initial batch of 1,000 cars.

These first cars will be used to introduce potential customers to the new CleanTDI technology with test drives available throughout the summer. In late August to early September regular volumes of diesel Jettas will go on sale at Volkswagen dealers throughout North America.

The new CleanTDI Jetta will be Volkswagen's first 50-state legal Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions compliant diesel model. In 2006, the last year that a 45-state legal diesel Jetta was available, the diesel comprised 30 percent of Jetta sales nationally even though it was not available in California and four north eastern states.

In November 2008 Volkswagen will begin production of the new Touareg CleanTDI SUV with sales to follow around the end of the year.

The IS220d is not as clean as its European competitors. The engine is derived from the Toyota Avensis which until recently wasn't even available with a particulate filter. A sad example of Toyota's lagging in the diesel technology department.

Well said zairnaim! If and when Toyota can create a diesel for the US, joshie will be singing it's praises. Maybe Toyota's diesel in their Lexus brand will be like their hybrids, overhyped, overpriced, and can't acheive the MPG as their gas counterparts. Then again, Toyota may just use Subaru's diesels, place it in their cars and claim victory!

@ JoshLexus4Ever

If you want anyone to respect your opinion, you need to A) FIRST EXPLAIN WHY YOU HAVE TAKEN A STANCE FOR OR AGAINST SOMETHING, then B) DO YOUR BEST TO PRESENT FACTS AND LOGIC SUPPORTING SAID OPINION AND IN TURN, NOT MISTAKING BIAS FOR SAID FACTS, and C) STAY ON TOPIC, INSTEAD OF TAKING ANY OPPORTUNITY TO B*TCH ABOUT ANYTHING NOT LEXUS WITHIN THIS OR ANY BLOG YOU SUBSCRIBE TO.
...If not, then you're just being a childish d-bag that needs to focus your energies on something more meaningful in life and should seek professional help.

Great car, great engine, looks like a corolla, a more agressive look from acura or lexu would do the trick though.

Yeah another reason to spend more on a VW that fits into the same class as the Corolla/Civic/Sentra with more quality issues and now it burns diesel which costs more, woohoo. The benefit currently of having a diesel car is not as marvelous as we think. The cost per gallon of diesel vs. the mpg gets very minute when scaled down. Almost the same as driving another few miles to get $.05 cheaper gas.

Sorry, I have hated the new Jetta since day one when they went away from its roots and offered this thing.

Josh:
VW beat Toyota (and all other makes) in the latest tests:
http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/publish/volkswagen_news/article_2208.shtml

For the first time, they compared cars with the same MILEAGE rather than AGE. Since Toyotas are bought by people who don't really like to drive, and German cars are generally bought by folks who drive a lot, the age tests were testing high-mileage german cars against low-mileage Japanese cars.

Too bad JD Powers doesn't have enough brains to take factors like this into consideration.

PS: If you were old enough, you would remember that VW built cars in the US, but quit because they couldn't get American workers to produce at a satisfactory quality level.

Price is FREE! ... if you own it long enough.
Seriously, one of my engineers, who has a 2003 Golf TDI, figures that around 400,000 kms (1/4 million miles) his fuel savings (compared to a GAS Golf) will have paid for the purchase price of CDN$28,000 (his is loaded)
NOTE: He always drove Japanese cars in the past, but doesn't feel safe in them now after driving a German car.

And even in Canada, with snow and salt, its not unusual to see used Jettas and Golfs for sale with > 400,000 kms.
i've seen VW Diesels for sale in Oregon with > 800,000 miles!

HeyEric,
Toyota's half-assed IS220d is cleaner than Audi's top line TDIs. Germany's going to have a cow if Toyota ever starts trying.

There goes midengine with that BS autobild article again.

Why no mention of price, are they afraid of scaring off potential suckers when they find out its the same price as the current Prius?
This is why, in Canada, Jetta TDI is $27,000 and the Prius is $29,500. Fair considering the Prius is both faster and gets significantly better mileage (and diesel is about 15% more expensive here).
Anyway, the TDI used to be $22,000 until VW thought diesel was all the fad and decided to hose everyone by jacking up the price.
Welcome to 2008 Midengine!

Do you have a single piece of evidence that supports your (fake) claim that the IS220d is cleaner than Audi's TDIs? Didn't think so. In fact Lexus has no 50 state diesels planned, Audi and VW do.

The Jetta TDI will be quite a bit quicker than the Prius. The expected EPA fuel economy ratings can possibly make it the most fuel efficient vehicle in America. And go ahead and stick a paper towel in some hybrid's exhausts, it will be dirty. No such thing with the new Jetta TDI. The Jetta TDI should start at right around 20,000 in the US.

huu,
So, if Toyota is so great, why did they buy 6 million TDI engines from VW for European cars in the 90's?

Why did Volvo diesels all have VW engines, and not Toyota engines.

Lets see ............... could it be because VW has been building small diesel engines for 30 years, and Toyota is new to the game, and trying frantically to catch up?

PS: your mom is calling you again ... its past your bedtime!

That is pure BS huu.
In fact the IS220d is the most polluting and has the worst mileage in its class, with Co2 emissions of (all manual models):
IS220d: 168g/km
320d: 128
A4 2.0tdi: 144
Merc C220cdi: 156
And Imperial MPG of:
IS220d: 44.8
BMW 320d: 58.9
A4 2.0tdi: 51.4
Merc C220cdi: 46.3
So in fact what you said was a complete lie.

GTI city/hwy L/100km - 10.1 and 6.8
Jetta TDI 6.8 and 5.1
Prius - 4.0 and 4.2

The GTI may be a rocket, but nothing compares to a hybrid. If you want comparable speed, get a Scion tC, it's only a second slower but costs 50% less.

But if it's about sportiness, you can always go for a Honda Civic Si, same price, same speed, better mileage, seats 5 and has a trunk, and its a Honda.

Honda Civic Si: 21/29 (24 combined)

Volkswagen GTI: 21/29 with the manual and 22/29 with DSG auto. (24/25 combined)

I guess facts are not important to you at all.

EPA tests cars on a dyno, indoors (actual speed, 0 MPH).
I drive on real roads and freeways, my 8 year old TDI still gets 53 MPG, and my biggest Peev is the Toyota Prius: slowest car on the road (oh yeah, they drive so slow so they can coax 40 MPG out, while you can drive a TDI like you stole it, and still never get as low as 40 MPG)

I can't wait for the Jetta Sport-wagon, like the one at Sema last October. But my wife wants a Touareg TDI so we can haul a travel trailer. (haven't seen many Prius pulling trailers, yet in the UK the top-pick for trailer towing is the Passat TDI with AWD, something we can't buy here, unfortunately)

Rupert,
go to www.audi.co.uk and www.lexus.co.uk and look up the specs in the configurator.

A4 2.0 TDI 162g/km of CO2, 46mpg combined and 9.9sec.
A4 3.0 TDI Quattro 200g/km, 37mpg combined and 7 sec.
A4 2.7 TDI 182g/km, 41mpg and 8.6sec

IS220d 168g/km and 44mpg and 8.9sec. Same levels as the 2.0 TDI considering the IS220 engine is a bit larger.

Once again, Toyota's lame attempt is still just as good if not better than the best Germany can scrounge up.

Chewy,
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2005findacarf.jsp
Civic Si SEDAN (4doors and a trunk) and GTI are identical under the 2008 EPA standard.
My facts are usually sprinkled across multiple forums, so if its not in this one, it'll be in one of the others.
Got any links to backup your source?

Dieselrules,
The E320 Bluetec's tow rating is "not recommended'.
http://autos.yahoo.com/2007_mercedes_benz_e_class_e320_bluetec_sedan-specs/?p=all
I'm sure, like other cars, it should be able to handle 1000lbs (a few short of the 9 tons the diesel was designed for)
Try driving your TDI in the city and see what wonderous mileage you get then. Love to see the emissions rating on that thing, probably makes my Jeep look Tier2Bin5ish.

Here's the link that everyone criticizes but can't refute. Diesel takes 25% more oil to make than the same volume of gasoline. Net gain of 5% in mileage if you use diesel vs a gas car. Don't even try to compare it to a hybrid, you wouldn't be able to handle the truth.
http://www.grinningplanet.com/2005/04-12/diesel-vs-gasoline-article.htm

Face it, Europe has been duped into "loving" diesels not because they're cleaner, but because the Germans make more money on them.

Dieselrules,
Since I doubt you'll even attempt reading. Here, straight from the article.

"It should be noted, however, that it takes about 25% more oil to make a gallon of diesel fuel than a gallon of gasoline, so we should really look at how a vehicle does on fuel efficiency in terms of "oil equivalents." Thus, we need to adjust the mileage claims for diesel vehicles downward by about 20% when comparing them to gasoline-powered vehicles"

regarding the "25% more oil" point, i've read that before but doubt it. there should be a consistent premium reflected in the price, adjusting for other influences, if it were true.

check out this:
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/gdu/gasdiesel.asp

i dumped the historical data for gas and diesel from may/02 - dec/07 into excel and as you can see, the differences in the cost of crude and refining are not that significant (no where near 25%) relative to the differences in taxation and dist/marketing.

diesel gas diesel/gas
retail price 2.15 2.04 105%
refining .35 .33 106%
dist/mark .19 .22 83%
taxes .53 .45 116%
crude oil 1.07 1.04 103%

i did this quickly so numbers might not add up exactly, but it's all EIA data.

I bet VW is wishing Toyota didn't get their own diesel. Those lost engine sales must hurt.

Like I said, the day Toyota decides to have some fun and really make a diesel...
