American motorists looking to scrap their clunkers already have purchased more than 4,000 new vehicles under the $1 billion "Cash for Clunkers" program. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that as of early today, 4,026 vehicles had been purchased using vouchers totaling $17,035,500.
After administrative costs of up to $50 million to run the program, that still leaves $933 million in the pot. The program ends Nov. 1 if drivers haven't used all of the money.
