Paul McCartney 's New LS600H Emits More CO2 In Transport Than It Will Ever Save!

The Lexus LS600H, which costs £84,000, was a gift from Lexus to the 65-year-old former Beatle, who helped promote the hybrid vehicle.

But instead of arriving by boat as expected, the car was flown to Britain on a Korean Air flight, creating a carbon footprint almost 100 times bigger than if it had come by sea.

Sir Paul is a vocal advocate of vegetarianism and has long been a poster child for environmental activism.

But if the plane was otherwise full, and the car was just along for the ride it's not a big deal.

Now if the plane was empty, with the LS the sole occupant besides the pilots, that would be a different story.

you can't fit too many cars on a plane. So in the end you still end up with unecessary c02.

I am sure it's not the first car transported by plane. Nothing wrong with that, just funny when it happens to the greenies.

i certainly don't want what he says to be true. it would be great if all we had to worry about was the supply of oil rather than than supply AND impact of oil.

why would ANYONE want this to be true? i've heard this argument before. i don't know where it comes from.

is there some sort of scientist/democrat conspiracy i don't know about?

al gore isn't my source of information anyhow. also, i tried to be extremely skeptical when viewing his movie. i actually have spent long hours researching the topic, and found his statements to be quite consistent with the scientific community as a whole.

what source of information has led you to your conclusions? how extensively have you researched the issue? i don't mean to come across as condescending, but i have found that the more people read about this topic, the less likely they are to believe our planet isn't at risk.

i would be happy to read some of your sources.

I don't have to have resources, it's common scientific knowledge. You know how the earth is tilted 23.5 degrees? Well, it's not always that way. It naturally tilts as the earth spins. Every couple thousand years, it'll rotate +/- 23.5 degrees. Which means that the angle the sun hits the planet is different which explains why the winters are colder and the summers are warmer. It also explains why the ice caps are melting, cause yes, the sun is now shining more directly on them. It has absolutely nothing to do with CO2 in the atmosphere. Look at the past, the earth has naturally gone through heating and cooling stages. Who's to say it isn't doing what it always has done right now? Besides, back in the late 1800s-early 1900s, there was a TON more CO2 going into the atmosphere and nothing ever happened. Trust me, it's a natural phenomenon.

1995e341995e34 - 5/14/2008 11:09:57 PM
-4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
i don't think many in the scientific community would consider it common knowledge that co2 doesn't effect global warming.

and if the the axis tilting were the cause of this, there wouldn't be a net change in temperature, but merely a shift in climate zones. while one pole heats up from increased sunlight, the other cools from decreased.

yes, there are occasional temperature fluctuations. but something always causes them.

and in reference to the late 1800's carbon emmisions, they were NOT greater than current emmisions. not even close. and a large portion of the 1800's carbon emmisions were from wood stoves burning wood that wasn't adding to the net carbond emmisions (trees eventually die and turn to co2, while fossil fuels would never release co2 on their own).

-----------------------------------

not really. we are much closer to the "end of the world" then you think, if we don't change anything. FACT- since the start of the industrial revolution, about 1750, the amount of CO2 in the atmostphere is on track to double by 2030. After that it will double again by 2100. That means, from 1750 to 2100 the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere would grow 4 times.

Any scientist who hasn't drunk himself retarded will tell you that if the amount of CO2 increases 4 times- we will be in some SERIOUS trouble.

Last night, Al Gore's global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.

Gore's mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh--more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh--guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore's average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore's energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore's extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore's mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

"As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk the walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use," said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.

In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

Yikes! Gore is an energy glutton. Now compare this to President Bush's comparatively modest home in Crawford, Texas, which is a model of environmental friendliness:

The 4,000-square-foot house is a model of environmental rectitude

Geothermal heat pumps located in a central closet circulate water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground where the temperature is a constant 67 degrees; the water heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. Systems such as the one in this "eco-friendly" dwelling use about 25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems utilize.

A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof runs; wastewater from sinks, toilets and showers goes into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is used to irrigate the landscaping surrounding the four-bedroom home. Plants and flowers native to the high prairie area blend the structure into the surrounding ecosystem.

No, this is not the home of some eccentrically wealthy eco-freak trying to shame his fellow citizens into following the pristineness of his self-righteous example. And no, it is not the wilderness retreat of

Al Gore is doing by far more then most people to save our planet. It is not his fault his cars and airplanes consumer gas, and that his natural gas and electricity pollutes. If large companies invested money in green technology and we had green cars/airplanes and electricity, Gore would use it. Period.

Which competition are you referring to? The Audi A8L W12 and Mercedes-Benz S600, both of which are significantly quicker? Because last I knew, the cars that were the same speed as the LSh--A8L 4.2, S550, 750Li--got the same mileage.

Nice try, S4. I looked up the gas mileage on all of them, the LSh came out on top. Even if it wasn't significantly more fuel efficient, the numbers add up over time. That's more than $20 each time you fill up.

A8L W - 15 mpg
S600 - 11 mpg
LSh - 20 mpg

A8L 4.2 - 16 mpg
S550 - 14 mpg
750Li - 15 mpg
LSh - 20 mpg

lexusis350lexusis350 - 5/15/2008 2:45:55 AM

Combined totals:

A8L W12 - 18 mpg
A8L - 19 mpg
750Li - 19 mpg
S550 - 17 mpg
S600 - 14 mpg
LSh - 21 mpg

Even though the LSh only gets 2 mpg better, it still goes to show you that Lexus hybrids are more for horsepower rather than fuel economy, just like I've been saying since the GSh came out. Besides, 2 mpg more is still 2 mpg more. You're saving money on gas with the LSh, even though it's a little slower than the rest. It has plenty of power anyway.

This whole Hybrid craze makes no sense.

With the emergance of the Escalade hybrid, I have come to a realization of the extent at which people have lost their minds. With the escalade hybrid coming in 17k over the base escalade, it is easy to see how buying a hybrid is more expensive than paying for gas.
The lexus ls600h is the supreme example of this. Not to mistake me, I believe that the fit, finish and reliability of the LS600h is top notch, but is it worth the money. For the same amount of cash, the Maserati quattro, or top class S600 seems to be equal or superior in those categories.

As far as performance goes, although a hybrid V8 is a great feat, it still does not deliver the performance of a car of that price tag.

With a 2 mpg advantage over other competitors, you will lose money buying the hybrid, but will it make you sleep better at night? no.

Which car won an award for being the most "green"? Not the toyota prius (the acclaimed best hybrid, and a lexus underling), but the S550. Hybrids are built inefficiently and their dependance on plants in many different countries creating small parts that are put together in a main factory, cause for a much higher Carbon whatever, than a beastly MB V8.

Food for though.

all the critics are overlooking one KEY POINT.

buyers of this class of car generally DON'T CARE a WHIT about performance. whether it's mpg or 0-60 performance.

it's all about PRESTIGE. and getting the top-of-the-line model. technical sophistication, and PRICE, are far more significant for this class of buyers' BRAGGING RIGHTS.

they DON'T CARE if they'd "save" $20,000 by just getting an LS460L. they may ACTUALLY PREFER paying the bigger bill. that's exactly what SETS THEM APART from the masses (even the monied class).

that the LS600hL is also the MOST TECHNICALLY ADVANCED vehicle in its class, is just ANOTHER plus.

"that the LS600hL is also the MOST TECHNICALLY ADVANCED vehicle in its class, is just ANOTHER plus."

This is so easily arguable.

Take the Audi A8L W12.

Volkswagen and Audi took years to develop its unique "W" configuration. It is two VR6 engines set at an angle with four camshafts. The W12 also has LED headlamps and taillamps, 20" lightweight wheels, a beverage cooler, a flip-up wood-paneled navigation screen, an MMI operating system with an available rear-seat mounted controller, available massaged, heated and cooled FRONT seats and a full-sized trunk.

You simply can't make a statement like that. Do you have a way to measure technological advancement? And, honestly, is the term "advancement" aptly used here, referring to a vehicle that gets no better fuel economy and no better performance than its gas-powered counterpart?

just about ANYONE can make a 12-cylinder car. toyota itself does, and offers it in the toyota century.

but ONLY LEXUS offers a HYBRID v8 luxury car.

i don't deny other brands also have some 'exclusive' features. but NONE stand out as much as a UNIAUE DRIVETRAIN. and TOTALLY SILENT running. (if only at low speeds)

the green factor doesn't hurt either. in CITY driving, it's advantage over other luxo barges IS considerable.

That is one of the stupidest comments I have ever heard. Just because people have money, does not mean that they have lost all sense of judgment. Nobody would ever buy a car just because it is more expensive than another.

With your theory, wealthy people would always buy the most expensive car on the market, not worrying about sense or price, but just because they want to flaunt their price tag.

The opposite is actually true. The true wealthy spend money to appear like they have less, and that is the true luxury. This is why brands such as Audi are taking off, because people are shying away from the most pretentious brands, as they know they have money, and don't need the constant reassurance of the public.

you OBVIOUSLY DO NOT understand wealthy people. who, for one, are NOT all alike.

there are indeed some amongst them, who will always choose the VERY BEST, regardless of price. (and 'best' can also be quite variable, according to different scales or values in judgement and evaluation.)

this does not mean, otoh, that there are not ALSO many amongst the truly rich, who ARE frugal. years of study by a pair of sociologists have found that the FAVORITE VEHICLE of american millionaires, is the prosaic ford f-150 TRUCK!

That's rather ironic, like how diesels are supposed to cut oil dependence when in fact they increase dependence on imported oil.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had a cow and turned the car away, or at the very least, made a big donation to the WWF or something to make amends.
