Peugeot 308 Hatch: Diesel Plus Hybrid Equals 70+mpg
The latest diesel-powered cars offered in Europe come close to - and in a lot of cases beat - hybrid-electric cars like Toyota's Prius in the mileage stakes, so imagine what would happen if you combined the best of both technologies. France's Peugeot hopes to do just that and by becoming the first carmaker to launch a diesel-electric hybrid by the end of the decade. Read Article

Finally! Now this is what i've been waiting for!

though what's this going to do in the diesel v. hybrid flame war... could this be the marriage that unites the waring clans? :-)

Rice,

I was going to dismiss you at first, but then I got to thinking. It seems to me that most of the diesel proponents (myself included) would be very much accepting of a hybrid tacked on to it. Yet it seems that hybrid people are "gas good, diesel bad".

I am for it for a few reasons:
1. It increases gas mileage in to ranges that we should be at
2. It decreases our dependence on oil
3. It combines the power from a diesel with the efficiency of a hybrid
4. Until a true alternative is found, this provides the best way of prolonging current use of fuel and technology

So besides for your "clean smelling world", which incidentally is false given that new diesels are matching gas CO2 emissions, and particulate filters have almost completely eliminated the diesel smell, what is your reasoning against a diesel hybrid?

Jeff,

Just ignore him, he just got his drivers license and works part time cleaning cars for his local Honda store.

Ricemaster, you must have missed the article about Honda introducing a hybrid to Japan. Geeee, I wonder why Honda would spend money to develop a hybrid if it was no good?

Get a clue.

This is the right way to reduce emission. Not a gimmicky hybrid car that's packed with loads of heavy batteries.

The problem with Hybrids is that they get horrible gas mileage on the highway.
One of the reasons why they don't sell so well in Europe. Coupling it to a Diesel makes the best sense.
This will pretty much hurt Toyota's Hybrid. They better put it with a Diesel quick, because it's not 40 mpg that you get, but you will get closer to 65 or so!
Europeans for the most part take their cars to go on vacation, and one of the reasons Diesel sell so well is that they are now, quiet, fast, powerful, and excellent MPG...on the highway that is all that you need.

thats always been in my opinion, the way to go, especially considdering they make such clean diesels now. except comparing the mileage of a diesel to a regular petrol car, i think it could get far more than 70 mpg combined w/ a hybrid system like toyota's.

So this will probably be one of the last posts from me for the next few months, but here goes:

I TOLD YOU SO! This is the way to go.

Ricemaster... please stop your nonsence! Have you ever been to Los Angeles? If there is any where in the world where it smells (and the air is full of smog aka PM) it is LA!
And do you know why diesels smellED? Because of PM and aromatic carbo groups... Hydrocarbons have been totally banned in all european diesel engine (which includes aromatic compounds or any other smelly stuff), the Peugeot PM-filters are so efficient that if you drive them in cities, the exhaust gas will have less PM in it than the air it sucks in to the engine meaning that it actually purifies the air making it less smelly... So how does it smell again? The only diesels which smell are those cummins diesels used in light trucks and whatever diesel engines in the big trucks... But since that is all you have in the US, who can blame you for being that ignorant?

And why this hostility towards the diesel hybrid? Because it isn't rice? Or because it is european and anything european is bad? PSA have used almost 10 years on perfecting this system... So don't worry it will work!

BTW to those about to tell me how wrong I am... Don't bother... I'm off to Singapore in a few days and won't be back here until october... So I guess you'll all have to wait a few months if you want to be corrected!

So long!

"Have a good time, bring lots of money and tap some fine asian booties for me"

LOL... Check, check and check... Now there is a stereotype for you :D

I'm not going to comment on "inferior european construction capabilities" (I think calling mercedes some of the least reliable cars is the overstatement of year and you forget manufacturers like BMW which are right up there in mechanical reliability) or the smog except for this: If you don't believe me, go to LA, hire a speed boat (or a sailing boat if you want, but only sissies go sailing! Real men have real engines, not a bedsheet on a pole) and go out about 30-40 nm... You'll be surprised by what you see... I was sure there had been a war or something first time around when I saw it.... Believe me

Anyway, Goodnight and So long... If anybody should stumble over a huge blue box called Regina Mærsk in LA, Vancouver, Yokohama, near Beijing, Shanghai, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Singapore, Colombo or Dubai within the next few months, give us a knock and I'll come out and say hello! :D

Well folks let me add my two cents here. Just for the record, the most unreliable diesels to hit the US market were neither Japanese or European, but were in fact American. The 5.7L Oldsmobile diesels were the biggest culprits. They were based on the gasoline engiens and did not have strogn enough cylinder ehad bolts to withstand the higher compression ratio of the disel configuration. The problem was eventually rectified but the damage was done. Another nail in the US diesel coffin was the oil embargo was over and gas was once again abundant and cheap. Back in the late 70s and early 80s lots of manufacturers were selling diesels in the US. Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Peugeot, Nissan, Mazda, Toyota, Isuzu, Ford, and GM all had various offerings. But I digress. I am not keen on ANY kind of hybrid because at present the manufacturers are shying away from mentioning the stratospheric cost of replacing those batteries when (not if) they go bad. When people start shelling out really large sums of cash to replace them the hype will die a (rightful) sudden death. This will be a killer when time comes for re-sale. I say the way of the future is the diesel engine all on its own. The fuel structure itself will have to change as well as internal engine components, but the compression ignition idea is here to stay.
