It's a start...but isn't that new Focus going to get like 65mpg with a "regular" diesel engine? Surely it can be better.

Well, since Ford and Peugeot share their Diesel engines (developed by Peugeot), any advance seen on a Ford will be seen on a Peugeot sooner or later (and the other way around)

The current Prius uses 4.3L/100km, so Peugeot only gets a 16% increase over a gas hybrid when diesel is supposed to be 30% better. OBLITERATES might be a more accurate heading?

Will the diesel engine turn off/on in the city, or will it be a mild version that's on all the time. Hopefully it'll be the former, or else emissions won't really change much.

A future car might outdo the Prius by a relatively small margin, but this car won't be competeing against the Prius, it'll go against the Prius 3 (the one the British reported to have 113 UK mpg). Atleast they now realize hybrid allows you to "do more with less" (hehe, see above ad).

Peugeot already has a lot of vehicles with its 1.6 litre diesel engine that consume 4.3L/100Km or less. The 1.4 HDI engine consumes 3.8 litres - I see no point in adding the cost and weight penalty of a hybrid drive. There has to be a reason why the Prius is a flop in Europe (too).

What people seem to ignore to understand about hybrids is that they emit trememdously less than straight gasoline and most certainly diesel-powered cars. I definitely see real benefits behind hybrid powertrains for that sole purpose and with the extra benefit of the added mileage from the diesel, it really is a win-win.

Hybrids don't necessrily help the environment more than a regular clean/low emissions diesel only because the batteries and assembly line emissions balance out the effect of low/no emission driving.

And what you don't understand about diesel technology is the Bluetec particulate filter. All diesel cars will have it sooner or later, and the point is to make it cleaner than gasoline burners. Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW and VW are the first to have it.

Wow. I can't believe two people even tried to refute what I said. EvoAudi, that's assuming that the batteries aren't 100% recyclable and that factory emissions are terrible. Luckily for my arguments, the batteries ARE 100% recyclable and Toyota has consistently and quite frequently been handed many awards for the cleanest production facilities in the business.

S4, there's no need to state anything about a diesel emitting less than a hybrid. Diesel-powered automobiles have always emitted more than hybrids. Let's not talk about expensive add-on filters that still do not get most filter-equipped diesel cars down to many U.S. state's emission regulations. Hybrids emit less right off the bat due to their very operation of running on electricity at low speeds. The Germans being the first to filter diesel pollution is great, but no milestone over anything else.

What we SHOULD be able to agree on is that a diesel-hybrid does make alot of sense for satisfying both intended goals of better miles per gallon AND fewer emissions.

"The current Prius uses 4.3L/100km"

That is what the brochure says. In real life they get around 6-6.5/100 km. Actually they're not that good in overall driving in fact they are rubbish at motorway speeds in Germany. I drove a Prius the other day at around 130 kmh and the computer said it was consuming 6.8 liters!

It's no secret that sales are rubbish compared to European diesel hatchbacks. As a matter of fact many of the Priuses are converted to LPG here.

And that is not a joke.

Just accept this is a hybrid that makes sense!

Isn't the next gen Prius is suppose to get 100 mpg? that what I though.

With its current size, weight and available luxuries, that is almost impossible. It would need to have both a new lithium ion battery AND a diesel engine instead of a gasoline engine, AND they'd need to make it the size of a Yaris but weighing less.

The new Prius IS expected to have that good an mpg rate WITHOUT a diesel engine and a significant decrease in size.
