Volkswagen unveiled its new Up! Concept, a small rear-engine car, at the Frankfurt Motor Show last month. Speaking with the press in Frankfurt, Volkswagen CEO, Martin Winterkorn, said that the Up! concept was a “real Volkswagen.” He confirmed that the concept is one variant of a potential range of vehicles that VW is calling its ‘New Small Family’.

According to Adrian Hallmark, executive vice president of Volkswagen of America, the 2-door variant of the Up! seen in Frankfurt will be offered as a Smart ForTwo rival and will also come in a soft-top convertible version.

It doesn't look all that appealing in 'SUV' form.

There's no SUV version of the up! Concept.

But there'll be a Van version of the Up! (Euro Bus hurray!)

These are what VW should be focusing on instead of 40-50k 'alleged' PASSAT (4-door) coupes and Sciroccos...

Keep em' inexpensive/well built, and their financial worries are over!

Well, no, I think they should definitely give the Scirocco attention. But not the Passat "coupe."

I think they want everyone to know that this is not simply some 'badge engineered' Skoda or something, but a 'from the ground UP!' VW effort...

It'd VW going back to its roots, and making a real Volkswagen (people\s car).
I think it's just a play on words.

Can this do what the Beetle did? Probably... if they keep the design simple, cute and desirable. Like a Fiat 500. But not retro.

This looks interesting as a convertible, and I'm really liking the long version. That, with a diesel or diesel-hybrid, could be a great pocket car/city runner.

No!
Diesel in this tiny thing?
Give it a 1.2 petrol, tit'll be fine. This is a really really small car, and it's rear engined!
No hybrid, no trickery, just a decent small car.

Why no diesel. Give it the engine from the Polo bleumotion and you'll get 85mpg.

Money money money.
A premium of even 500 dollars is too much for such a cheap car, plus the petrol will have great MPG too.

$500 really won't be much when you consider that the diesel version would probably only come in the four-door. I'm guessing the four-door model would be about $10K. The diesel engine would be one of very few options, keeping the price low, although it should be easily customizable like the Mini.
