Pickups and SUVs to outsell cars in Dec.

Gas prices go down (at least for the moment) and Americans go back to buying the type of vehicles they prefer -- pickups and SUV's. Makes complete sense, especially with the huge discounts.

It never ceases to amaze me how short-sighted people are. Has the memory of $4-$5 gas already left their minds? I can't wait to see what happens when these people who have 5 years notes suddenly find themselves on the other end of high gas prices again.

I also thought that, in general, truck sales go up in winter much like convertible (car) sales go up in spring/summer. So is this partly a cyclical occurrence?

LIES, LIES, LIES!!!!

Theres NO way that trucks are going to outsell cars. Congress, the environmentalists, the media, and Michael Moore explicitly told me that Detroit makes cars that no one wants to buy and that everyone hates big trucks and SUVs. Everyone wants a prius, pure and simple. This story is a complete fabrication... (sarcasm).

Reason for trucks selling well:
1) Awesome deals
2) Awful winter weather
3) Many truck users were holding off on their purchases of trucks thanks to a crap economy.... but eventually these guys who use trucks HAVE to buy new ones. Individual consumers (us "civilians") don't need to buy cars as urgently as the people who NEED trucks, so the new car sales are going to be down.


Once again..... TAX GASOLINE DAMNIT!!!

Lately, because of all of the discounts and the fuel prices, I have an itch to go check out a Ford F150 Crew Cab 4x4 or a Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab 4x4.

Yeah, some workers always need a pick-up. I find it more interesting that SUV's have rebounded. Guess someone must want them. Must all be being sent to the mid-east by private exporters or something as the press says American's don't want anything Detroit builds.

By the way, isn't the Impala is number 2 to the Camrey in car sales this year?

Over here in St. Maarten even when gas prices were high no one bothered with switching to cars. In the last 6 months the amount of SUV's and trucks sold have gone up!

We want big cars and trucks. Congress needs to quit telling us what to drive and let the marketplace decide. The BIG 3 have it right "We want BIG cars and trucks". Pelosi has a jet, yet she and Barny Frank want me to drive a Prius, Yaris, Mini, etc. I want a Tundra, Sequoia, Tahoe, F150, etc!!!!!!!!!

we just need a gas tax. like every other SMART industrialized country. 50 cents/gallon at least.

aside from the NEED for it to fix our crappy roads and crumbling bridges, etc. (whose wear is accelerated by heavier vehicles!), some of the proceeds can be used to subsidize WORTHY projects.

people would still be free to indulge their love/"need" for gas guzzlers. they just will be carrying their fair share of the load, for a change. for wear on hwys, AND subsidizing arab oil states.

Think of it this way. "With fuel prices so low, the bigger your gas tank, the more you save!!!"

If this goes on too long, the Big 2 1/2 will offer up trucks as their new business plan and then get the rest of that bailout.

The low gas prices are just a fabrication to sell off inventory of the gas guzzling beasts. The IQ of these buyers is equivalent to the gas economy they get.

up thru december 1999, my primary vehicle was a pickup that got 25 - 33 mpg. it was fully capable of hauling a 3/4 ton load, altho' the volume of the box was less than full-sizers. i still own this '94 toyota truck, for whenever i need to haul things.

since 2000, this was supplemented by a 2000 focus as my daily driver. it got 30 mpg overall.
since 2005, this was replaced by an '03 corolla, which got 40 mpg overall in the summer.

people who use big trucks as daily drivers are idiots.
mine is one of the most economical trucks, and i still use it ONLY when needed.
