Pontiac Solstice sales down, Starun Sky still flying sky high
When the Pontiac introduced the Solstice in 2004, it hopes that the car would bring attention to the rest of its lineup. While the car was a big hit, it didn’t seem to generate much consumer interest in other Pontiac models, and now with its two year lifespan, the Solstice seems to have sluggish sales as well.

The sales of the Pontiac Solstice have been down 19 percent for the first half of 2007. Also, according to Autodata, sales of other Pontiac models are down 17 percent as compared to other GM brands which are down 9 percent.

On the other hand, the Saturn Sky...

I'm not surprised that Pontiac sales are not doing as well as GM's other brands. Pontiac lost its way some time ago with gimmicky styling and some of the ugliest wheels and instrument panels in the GM stable. I'm referring here to things like three-spoke wheels and wheels with spokes coming out at weird angles in an attempt to look different and under the misguided assumption that its upper lower class customers would associate these styling gimmicks with "attitude". Pontiac's stylists should have been sent to a special camp for attitude adjustment. No doubt Pontiac listened to flawed marketing studies that told Pontiac executives what they wanted to hear. GM should try and make a deal with the new owners of Chrysler to buy the Jeep division in exchange for cash and the Pontiac brand.

The new G8 will turn Pontiac around.

Sadly, it's not a real Pontiac. They should be able to design their own damn cars.

Drive one and you'll know why. I'd buy an MX-5 in a heartbeat.

I looked at it initially, but:

1. You can only fit comfortably if you're under 5'8"
2. There's no trunk space

So it's for short people who don't need trunk space.
In XXXL America, that's a small demographic..

We use to see them come into the shop all the time rear diff. problems and other silly stuff. And then they go put a turbo on it!! It already sucks and then you add power to hasten the service appts!! Look at this way, which car do SCCA drivers prefer....could it be the Miata?

Yes-The car was built to a price and shows it.There is minimal luggage sapce in the trunk, cheap plastics,no glove box. The turbo gives it some spunk but the botom line is the day to day living does not compare to a Miata. Interesting enough the last MR2 suffured from a lack of space as well.People today want a fun sportscar that is also practical.

The Solstice started looking old by about the third time I saw it. The Sky still looks good. But both suffer from obscenely low space, worse than my old MR2. I was able to take a two week road trip with 2 people and clothes. It had enough nooks and crannies. No way in these cars. And those roofs!!!! What were they thinking??!! I test drove a Sky Redline, it blew me away. But there was just no way I was gonna get into one of them.

The Saturn Sky looks way better than the Solstice but, as you can see from most comments here, style alone just does not cut it any more. I sure hope that GM does not fall back into its old trap overlooking practicality like the need for adequate space and relying entirely on style and marketing hype to sell its cars.

i would personally rather have the sky than the miata, probably because i couldnt picture myself driving something like a miata lol. but the sky looks alot more expensive than what it is, with its wide body and short length. it would be nice as a second car, orcar for someone that doesnt really travel and its justs them

But you'd get rocked on a track or even to the next stoplight by most anything on the road. I guess looks really can be deceiving.

I don't think the Solstice looks "old" at all (when I see it in person it still grabs my attention), but I've always liked the Sky better. Hooray for Saturn!

The whole thing just falls apart... the build quality sucks to say the least. BTW, the title says Starun - as if they were already speaking of the Chinese knockoff.

I see Miatas from the early 90's as daily drivers, I wonder if these will last more than three years.

I had a '92 back in 1999...had it for 2 years and put another 40k miles on it bringing it to 110k miles. The thing was almost bulletproof. Virtually the only problems I had was the engine overheating once, but one trip to the mechanic and it was corrected, and the constant sealing problems with the roof and ESPECIALLY the trunk. When it rained, my passenger seat was soggy and my trunk would have about 4 inches of water.

There already is a Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata, unless you're under the impression Mazda is going to turbocharge the Miata.

All I hear are excuses... the MX-5 drives better and is more practical than these roadsters.
