Porsche Again Kicks Formula One To The Curb As Not Cost Effective
German sports car manufacturer Porsche has once again ruled out re-entering formula one in the near future. In February, the marque’s head of motor sport Hartmut Kristen denied that recent infrastructure developments were in preparation for a grand prix return. To the news agency Sport-Informations-Dienst, he has now referred to Porsche as a small independent manufacturer, despite the fact that it was awarded first place last May as the most prestigious automobile brand by New York’s Luxury Institute and owns a large share of Volkswagen.

“The question for us is: can the capital commitment that would be necessary for formula one return enough to make it preferable to other projects?

Damn....it would be great to have another big manufacturer in Formula 1 to take the place of Torro Rosso or Spyker. If Porsche won't do it then another VW brand should.

I don't think Porsche or VW will move on that anytime soon.

They get stuck on the return of investment factor, which simply is not there right now.

I agree 009. To add to that idea, the F1's push towards NASCAR-like vehicle uniformity gives little to no incentive for Porsche on the R&D side either.

More like you can spend hundreds of millions on a single series and place like Toyota and Honda near the bottom.

Or you can spend the same amount globally on numerous series and do it right, then place in the top finishers every time.

You reach a bigger market and might sell more cars in the mix.

I do not think Formula brings much of a profit. Most of the top running teams have rich sponsors willing to shell out millions for operational costs, which save manufacturers money but I do not know where the profits come in.

As for Porsche the best way to make money in motorsports is to sell racecars. This is why Porsche has not had a factory team in almost a decade. Penske Porsche is not exactly a factory team but rather a factory-backed team. Porsche sells racecars: GT3 Cup, GT3 RSR, and RS Spyders, which the latter may see more sales of the car. In F1 you cannot sell racecars to other teams really. You may see privateer teams running a certain engine package provided from a manufacturer but that's it, you will not see another team running the exact same car as the F2007 other than Ferrari. As for sports car racing, you have international series that run very similar rules where you can sell a ready built racecars to whoever wants to race. ALMS, LMS, JLMC, FIA GT, FIA GT3, British GT, and other national championships have more potential seeing $$.

Agent 009 It is really harder to reach a bigger market than F1 but I do agree Toyota is at the bottom. I'm tired of hearing of the few points they score or how high trap speeds are on certain tracks. They spent $400 million so they are at the very bottom of the return on investment scale
