Porsche Cayenne hybrid can do 70mph on the electric motor alone

When the 2009 Porsche Cayenne hybrid hits the markets, the new gasoline-electric powered SUV will be capable of cruising at speeds up to 70mph on the electric motor alone.

Once the gasoline engine helps the car 70mph, the SUV will stop using gas and the electric motor will be used for power.

Porsche is working with Bosch and Audi to produce the gasoline-electric V8 engine which will have a fuel economy of 26.8mpg.

I still say that a Porsche hybrid is an oxymoron. Just how long do you think that Porsche can sustain 70 mph on the battery alone? Drag at higher steady speeds or having to accelerate for passing will quickly deplete the battery. I love German cars the most and hate hybrids for reasons I have stated many times here before. The only hybrids I see as being viable are plug-in hybrids for strictly urban use and that would be feasible only if power companies offer special rates to consumers who recharge these vehicles during off-peak hours.

Doesn't make sense. Pure speculation at this point on the porsche hybrid system. 70mph and up on a battery power only? are you kidding me? 70mph to 80mph will take about 50 seconds. try moving 6000+pounds with 30 to 50 hp.

THIS IS NOT VERY HARD TO DO ONCE YOU ARE UP TO A GIVEN CRUISEING SPEED NO MATTER WHAT IT IS IT ONLY TAKES 10HP TO MAINTAIN IT YOU ONLY NEED THE POWER TO ACCELERATE ONCE YOU ARE UP TO THAT SPEED YOU DONT NEED THAT POWER ANYMORE AND THEN YOU CAN HOLD THAT SPEED WITH JUST 10HP.
