Porsche Panamera scooped
CAR Online has snared the best spy photos yet of Porsche's new four-seater, the Panamera. Think of it as a four-door version of the 928 - a four-seater GT to bridge the gap between the hard-core 911 sports car range and the Cayenne 4x4.

We won't see the Panamera in showrooms before 2009, with prices stretching from £54,000-£84,000. Read on for the full lowdown on the most exciting sports saloon to reach the market in years.

Nope. The Panamera uses a variety of different components plucked from across Porsche's product portfolio. You need the strongest suspension and brakes going? Sure, borrow them from the Cayenne SUV. You need a lightweight, sports car chassis? Here, use parts of the 911 Turbo platform.

It'll be front-engined and rear-drive, at first at any rate; there's some talk of a four-wheel drive version in the pipeline. Porsche hopes to build 20,000 a year at first, but that figure sounds a bit conservative to us.

The Panamera is Porsche's answer to the CLS; a genuine four-seater set in the GT mould. The front-engine packaging and long wheelbase are designed to free up lots of cabin room for the four deep-set passenger seats, while the hatchbacked boot will top 475 litres (more with the rear seats folded).

Don't think this Porsche will be a soft comfort-oriented four-door, though. Much of the body will be made from lightweight aluminium and engineers have told CAR Online that the weight will fall around 1800kg. With direct-injection V8 power and up to 500bhp, it's not going to be slow.

This official design sketch points to a low-slung, glamorous sports saloon. Okay, we accept that so many design sketches end up being pie-in-the-sky - but we hope that Porsche will know better than to make the Panamera as dowdy as the Cayenne.

At one point in the design process, Porsche considered suicide rear-hinged back doors, but it has stuck with four regular saloon doors, as witnessed in these exclusive pictures. It's unclear at this stage whether the spoiler on this prototype will make production; if it does, it's likely to be an automated pop-up item.

I don't like it, there's something about the rear windows that don't look right. Still, I'm sure as a four door, four seater Porsche it'll sell just fine.

the rear window line is fake, look at the second pic and see the real (black coloured) window line.

Porsche should've stuck with its 2-door models. This one is a mixture of a Maserati/SAAB slapped with a porsche front-end on it. I hope they're not planning on building that 2-door SUV concept. That would really suck.

I wonder if this Porsche 4 door does well enough, maybe they might ditch the Cayenne.

I love Porsche, but the Cayenne never appealed to me.

I take the Aston Martin Rapide over this any day. The Aston Martin Rapide beauty is just breath taking. Porsche make very good sportcar, but this design is not very appealing.

Their designs are classic designs. If anything drastic was to be changed they would loose the traditional Porsche look and that may turn away consumers.

Aston Martin? Well La De DA!

If you are looking for an ultra high performance Saloon with an ultra high performance price tag why look past the MB AMG E63 or BMW M5?

I'm not too sure about the rear design on this. Then again it's got some camo on it so i'll save my judgement until it's revealed.

As much as I hate Volkswagen products, I always seem to have a soft spot for Porsche. I love the Carrera, Carrera GT, the Boxter, the Cayman, the Cayenne, and now the Panamera.

Being that it is a Porsche - I'm sure it will drive beautifully. I hope it looks more like a 4 door 911 rather than it resembling the Cayenne (I love Porsche but that Cayenne is ugly). The best looking 4 door vehicle is the Maserati Quattroporte - but a "4 door looking 911" would be sweet!

I can see where they're going with this design, and I think it's going to be great on its own. It won't be a 4 door 911 or a lowered Cayenne.

It seems like whatever design Porsche comes up with, it's always very unique and better than everyone else's. If you take a manufacturer like Lexus, everything they make looks the same. There's no creativity. I can more or less imagine what their 2010 model will look like.

Aston, Lambo, and the F-car are all great, except the cars will disintegrate when the warranty expires.
