Porsche planning 914 revival
Never say never when it comes to strange collaborations between big carmakers, for example the coalition of Porsche and Volkswagen for a small sports car. Since Porsche is in process of taking over the Volkswagen group it’s no more a surprise. VW, which is ready to launch the latest concept at the LA Auto Show 2008, is confident that the car will have such a success that is will put it in production by 2011 in two versions, for both VW and Porsche. It was an ugly car for its time, and would definetly move Porsche much more down market.

What are you talking about? You really have no idea. The Porsche 914 started out as a VW project but VW dumped the idea halfway through and Porsche adopted it in order to sell it as an affordable sports car. The 914 was quick for its time and not many cars could handle with it on the track. That's right, the 914 is a car designed to handle and was very popular in the tuning scene as its engines were reliable and could be tuned to produce more horsepower than they were offered with.

The 914 ENHANCED the image of Porsche despite initial public mistrust. It was also a sales success in the end.

Unlike your favorite brand, Lexus, other car makers have to worry about making money since they don't have a big daddy like Toyota to stuff their pockets with green bills whenever they run dry.

What are you smoking? One of my best friends at the time had one, and he even agreed it was the worst car he ever owned.

I don't care what your friend says about his 914, because it is HIS opinion and it means jack if he thinks the 914 was the worst car he's ever owned. There are tons of happy 914 owners in Europe and even here in the US. The 914 is based on simple and proven technology and models with the 2.0 6-cylinder motor are spirited performers. All 914s are good handlers.

His 914 had the vw engine and handled like one. Maybe the 914's with the Porche engine were a little more "spirited", but they never handled like a true Porche.

No, the 914 handled like every other Porsche at the time, maybe even better because it was lighter, had a shorter wheelbase and no power steering (ideal for the track). It employed a VW engine, true, but this engine was modified for Porsche. The base engine was gutless, but the 2.0 motor was very lively for its time period and the preferred motor amongst enthusiasts.

The 914 was conceived as a Porsche, not a VW. The body was to have been built by VW for cost savings, but in some twist of fate, VW wound up charging Porsche more than was initially envisioned, making the car more expensive than it was to have been.

Badged as a VW/Porsche in Europe, it was a failure, but it had more success in North America, where it carried Porsche badges, only.

They had sharp handling, but were not too quick, and when introduced, the styling was criticized as bland and uninspired.

I hope any new entry Porsche is more 356 and less 914.

I'm all for a competitively priced Porsche. I say bring back the 928. :)

the 924 has to be on of the worst cars Porsche has ever made if not the worst, it was unreliable, slow, ugly and used a VW engine, very horrible car. its only saving grace was that it was cheaper than the other porsches

I miss the sleek, beautiful early daze of the 911. I always am drawn to the older ones. The 70s.

The 914 was not quick. However it had great handling, sounded like a Porsche, had good highway stability. I had an oportunity to buy one yrs ago and didn't. I regret my decision.

If this is produced, will it be positioned below the boxster or between boxster and cayman?

It surprises me that people still don't know the Boxster and the Cayman are variants of same car, including the engine. In fact, the Boxster RS60 has more HP (303) than any Cayman S ever built.

Ferdinand Piech, who brought the world the Le Mans winning 917 race car (and the Bugatti Veyron) was responsible for engineering the 914.

I'm not sure this is a good idea. I think a $40,000 sports car is cheap enough for a company like Porsche. Now the Boxster has proven over time to be a great car and a great value, but going less than that would really de-value Porsche. I think they've already taken a hit in image in some extent with the Boxster and most definitly with the SUV and now the car... they don't really need to cheapen thier image more. Porsche should be a brand most strive to have... not that most can easily have.

is it the price that makes a porsche desirable, or the performance? if they were considering making a lotus elan, i would agree with you. but this could be a legitimate sports car with less cylinders, weight, and luxuries.

you really think it'll cost $50k while offering a 4 cylinder?

base model will probably go for close to 40k but with options and taxes, you're looking at 50k easy.
