Porsche to Move Boxster & Cayman Production Out of Finland
Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, will be continuing the successful cooperation on the production of the mid-engine models Boxster and Cayman with the Finnish manufacturing partner Valmet Automotive until the year 2012, thus fulfilling it contractual obligations. In a call for tenders, Porsche has chosen Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co KG, Graz, as future contract manufacturer. The Austrian enterprise secured the contract because it submitted the most financially attractive offer, and because it is in a position to take on development tasks for Porsche sports cars.

Holger P. Härter, Deputy Chairman of Porsche SE, and as Chief Financial Officer responsible for the allocation of commissioned production, comments: “Over the last eleven years, Valmet has built more than 200,000 sports cars of outstanding quality for us. Our decision not to continue our successful cooperation is in no way a vote against Valmet. Rather, it was the high development capacity and competence of our future partner that tipped the balance in favor of our new partner.”

Magna Steyr will make it possible for Porsche to continue the model of the “breathing factory” in the next decade. From 2012 onwards, all production volumes of the Boxster series, which, for capacity reasons, are not able to be completed in Zuffenhausen, will be taken on by Magna Steyr’s factory in Graz. Porsche will supply the engines and various components. This ensures that in future, too, production at Porsche’s main factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen will run at full capacity. Further synergies arise from the numerous supply relations between Porsche and the Magna Group: the enterprise already manufactures many important components for Porsche. There are intersections particularly in convertible top systems and bodywork components.

I hope this won't affect Porsches outstanding quality and reliability.

Good. Porsche should focus on building proper cars like the 911 Carrera not worry about some flimsy Cayenne, siblings Boxster & Cayman. People who own a Boxster or a Cayman may as well have a flag on the car saying 'I can't afford the 911 so I've had to resort to this ... thing'.

I chose the Cayman S over the Carrera because I feel it handles better and I find the storage space a lot more practical than the Carrera. I can easily put two golf bags in the back, which is a real pain in the 911. If only Porsche would give the Cayman an engine it deserves it would be a really great car. Shame they never will though.

Dumb comment from someone who has probably never driven a Porsche.

So motor 1 that would be you. If you can't afford it bash it..... You can't afford the Boxster, no one you know can afford one, so you haven't even been able to drive one..... Bash, Bash, Bash from your computer in your trailer home.

not agreeing but in his defense alot of mags, and reviewers have said the same thing about the 911.....personal opinion though from driving the cayman and having driven a 911...if the Cayman wasnt held back by the fact it has to undercut the price and performance of the 911...it would be the better car it feels more balanced, and composed and less unpredictable.....I havent driven 4 models just the rear drive carerra S but the Cayman has the same interior, alot of the same components, the better balance of a mid engine coupe it honestly makes better sense would be amazing to see a twin turbo variant like 911 turbo.....Im sure it would be faster and perform better

I've driven a Porsche, yes.

The 911 is brilliant.

The Cayenne is some incarnation - picture Land Rover building a rear engined sports car? They would never do it. So why Porsche? To be different?

Only you have that image embedded in your head. You clearly don't know anything about the Boxster or the Cayman because they drive incredibly well. As much bashing as the Boxster receives it is an awesome car. I would prefer the Cayman S because it's got a proper roof but realistically they are up to Porsche standards. Cayman S could get pretty close to a 911 in price if it's well equipped so I wouldn't exactly call it a Poorman's Porsche.

If that's the case are Lexus poorman's luxury car? NO! not at all.

Motor1 is not a Porsche owner. You will never hear a Porsche owner say what he just did. I'm a P-car owner for life and though I love the funky characteristics of my 964, I will never ever ever say that the Boxter or Cayman are poser cars. They are some of the best, most dynamic sports cars on the market today. They're more practical and easier to drive than a 911 and much more planted and confidence inspiring for their drivers. Exactly what you want when you're not on the track. Canyon carving at the limit in my 964? Not a chance! I dont have a death wish. Magazine editors can say what they want but in the end, they drive cars for free and when it comes time to write the check, plenty of people can think of few reasons to write one for a 911 after they just got done with a Cayman test drive.

I can afford a 911 and bought a Boxster instead. Convertible 911s look bizarre to me - I want the design of the vehicle to be just as stellar as the performance underneath.

I can't afford the 911 so I've had to resort to this thing. Even worse, I've done it in 2001 and again in 2005. It's a real bummer, but please don't kick a man when he's down.

Don't Magna Steyr build the BMW X3 as well?

The X3 is a pretty reliable thing (most reliable according to Top Gear Survey 07) so I don't think there will be any problems with it being built by them.

They also produce:
Chrysler Voyager for Europe
Chrysler 300 for Europe
Jeep Commander for Europe
Jeep Cherokee (US Liberty) for Europe
Merc E class 4 Matic
Merc G class
Saab 9-3 Cabriolet

Less positively they produced the M class between 99-02, its worst years.

And I've just read that Magna Steyr helped Merc develop the 4 Matic system!

I agree the plant where the X3 was built was award one of the best plants in Europe.

It's all financing! it doesn't mean a car is any worse than if Mercedes had it in their plant. Contract work isn't a surprise in the auto industry.

Woah, that's a huge surprise. I never realized Porsche built their cars outside of Germany. Since Magna won the contract, I guess they'll be building them in Austria as Magna has a new plant there (where labour is also cheaper too).
