Powerful new turbodiesel introduced by BMW
BMW has launched a new engine line-up for the BMW 6 Series range, introducing a new diesel engine to the Grand Tourer Coupe and Convertible model.

The 635d twin-turbocharged engine is complemented by the introduction of BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology to the whole of the 6 Series line-up.

The 3-litre common-rail turbo engine has an output of 286 horses and develops peak torque of 428lb-ft at 1,750rpm and uses two turbocharger for low-down and mid-range torque.

The BMW 635d Coupe manages 62mph in 6.3 seconds while the Convertible achieves this in 6.6 seconds, with both going on to an electronically-limited to 155mph.

Its a nice approach to use 2 turbochargers for low-down and mid-range torgue. Personally, if, I had a choices between any of these turbo chargers BMW's are incorporating on their new models and M-series..I'd take latter in a heartbeat. I don't believe in a Turbo chargers on a luxury car segment, only on a 4 bangers. That's just me of course.

If you had any idea of what you're talking about you would know the M-division never used/will use turbochargers, supercharger or any kind of forced induction..

The E30 M3 was available in a Turbocharged version, but other than that, always Natural aspirated as they should be.

Amazing figures though these diesels have nowadays... 286 HP / 428lb-ft at 1,750rpm sheeesh thats a lot of torque.

BMW fans are funny. Anti-turbo, but then BMW (re)learns what a turbo is with the 335i. Now they retreat and like turbos. And are only left to hope that there are no turbos in the M cars. Funny. Anyways, nice diesel, but this one is running quite a lot of boost.

The BMW-fans who say things like that are not real BMW-fans because they're probably not old enough to remember the 745 Turbo or all the turbocharged Alpinas..
BMW has a very rich history with turbocharging. Except op M-Division cars offcourse.

Hey BMW, you have excellent in-line 6 cyl. engines but how about being a pioneer in supercharged diesels instead of turbos.

Turbocharging is more efficient, it would make no sense to supercharge a diesel.

Mazda once had a supercharged diesel and it was rubbish to drive.

A turbo-charger re-cycles otherwise lost energy.
A super-charger sucks energy: main advantage is no lag & more power, but it does not improve efficiency.

Forced induction gives more power from a smaller engine, but is limited by pre-ignition in gas engines.
Diesel has no such limitation.
New Ford pickup diesels are running 60 PSI boost, and modified engines are running over 100 PSI.
There are no gas engines that could survive this.

As for no diesels in M-cars ... never say never.
Diesel performance is a new and growing field, as witnessed by 5,000 pounds 4WD pickups turning sub-10 second 1/4 mile times.

Drop this engine in an X5....enough torque to easily move that beast.

Actually, for MY2008 you can get this engine in the X5. O-60 in under 7 seconds and a topspeed of about 236 hm/u.
