Preview: 2009 Audi A5 Sportback
It appears the new Audi A5 Coupe may not be a single model line for long as rumors of a new A5 Sportback begin to mount. Though the vehicle shares some obvious similarities with the A4 Avant, the roomier cabin, taller profile and sloping hatchback style rear-door means the A5 Sportback could form its own niche. I thought the whole point of the A5/S5 was to be a coupe only platform with possible convertible like the 6-Series. I really hope this doesn't happen because Audi needs at least one model that isn't available in a wagon.

Why not make a wagon?

The more kick ass wagons the better.

the A5 / S5 is more the A4 size (3 series) not the A6 or bigger (6 series)

What would be the justification of an A5 4dr "sportback"?

A5 coupe,A5 convertible,A5 Wagon,A5 4 dr sportback,A5 this A5 that.

If all these are coming, then what's the need of new A4.

Audi should not make more variants of A5 after the RS5 otherwise A5 series and A4 series will clinch sales from each other.

bad move Audi.Either make all these A5 variants and discontineou A4 series or come up with a sporty new A4 (like 3 series and IS and not like C Class) and stop extending A5 series after RS5

am i the only one that thinks that audi is becoming a little bit like lexus, they just want to bring out model after model without being rational, maybe im wrong but i think a lot of people are blinded just because its an audi

I don't know why you think Lexus does that, "hateslexus," because it's really Mercedes-Benz. They cannot stop churning out new 'ute variants, for no apparent reason.

if the S5 replaces a lot of the A4 models then all is well

great marketing
people that don't like the A4 love the A5

I disagree Jugnu. If Audi is to become the leading premium brand in terms of sales they need to keep adding models.

The A5 will not cannibalize sales of the A4, because the A5 will be a grand touring version of the A4 meanwhile the A4, which will be brand-new in September, will be a lot more sporty than the current model while still retaining its impeccable attention to ergonomics and detail for the interiors.

Then what happens to the A6? Audi loves to canibalize sales from the other models. keep up the good work

No, GermanNut, be rational. A four-door A5 is just not happening. The A4 and A5 are the same car! Just one has two doors!

How can you have a coupe wagon ???
I doubt the article is getting it right, for now it's just a rumour anyway. It may be the next A4/S4 wagon.

"These renderings reveal that the new A5 variant could pick up two rear doors."

It's just one guy who had nothing to do yestarday and decided he's gonna photoshop an A5 in a special way. Read special=wrong.

Yes, that's the point. The A5 Cabriolet will replace the A4 Cabriolet.

I always believed that there should be an A5 sedan. Seriously. I think there should be a sedan about the size of an Infiniti G35. The A4 is slightly too small and the A6 slightly too large. There is a gap between the two. I don't mind the A5 with as many variants as possible. Just my two cents.

The new A4 will be on the same platform as the A5, it will be bigger then the Current A4.
The A5 is the Coupe version of the new A4,plain and simple. So the new A4 will be around the same size as the G37

This is just a bizarre idea. I don't see how this fits in the linup since there is already an A4 and A6 avant.

its doesn't fit and this will not be a A5, maybe the New A4/S4 avant

It is the Audi way .. to canabilize their own product to compete with one another. Actually, we should blame VW/Audi group as a whole. Let me get this str8 ... Their is a A4 ( sedan, conv, wagon ): A5 ( coupe, soon to be conv, & maybe a wagon ) : A6 ( sedan & wagon ): R4 coupe and conv due out : Audi TT coupe & Conv .... How exactly is all this going to fit into a price range of $ 20k? It sure seems like alot of different variants of body styles for such a small price window. Seems to me that Audi wants to have a car priced $2k apart from one another. not the smartest idea ..

there not gonna canabilize anything, this is not a A5, it will probaly be the new A4/S4 avant.

I don't see this as a cannibalizing issue either. I think that Audi's marketing wags see the A5 as fitting into a price niche that makes it easier to steal sales from BMW, Infinity and the new Mercedes C-Class.

the front spoiler is a copy of the BMW 3 series, if you look at the e46 M3 front spoiler, you can see how Audi copied this BMWish look, on BMW since the 1970's 3.0 CS,

AHH! Okay! This is not going to happen. Wow, can you guys be dim.

The A5 is PURELY a two-door variant of the A4. It will ONLY have two doors, convertible or not. The A4 AVANT will always be an A4, as the A5 SPORTBACK would be too much like it. There will not be a 6 Series-sized car called the A5, there will be no A5 sedan.

However, the A7 will slot between the A6 and A8 as Audi's sexy CLS competitor. I've heard possibilities of a two-door convertible/coupe version to compete with the likes of the XK and 6er, which would mix things up, as there's not much going on in that class.
