Preview: 2010 BMW 5-Series Revealed
When you think of luxury executive saloons, one car always comes to mind – the BMW 5-series. A class leader since its inception, the 5-series remains a crucial car to BMW. With the current E60 5-series introduced back in 2004, BMW is preparing the sixth-generation model to be revealed in 2010.

It will be a tough job for the designers as well as the thousands of engineers working across BMW’s development centers to renew the current model, a car that already resides at the edge of the technical front line. The new design is critical for BMW’s design manager Adrian van Hooydonk and his team, who have to create an exterior that radiates the brand’s distinctive design values and at the same time feels new and fresh. Using information from various sources, these renderings were compiled by our partners over at Sweden’s Auto Motor and Sport and their illustrator Radovan Varicak, giving us a preview of what the final version will look like.

It look really good, I love it, but let hope the actual product model look like this. I really like the side line and the headlight. Differently a big improvement on the current model.

Radovan Varicak in our opinion is the Picasso of photoshoppers...If you look at his old stuff he has been the most accurate and on mark of ALL the people in the business who do this for a living.

We bow to the master...

Hmm... But even a master can make mistakes... And he did some here... Some of the lines are missing... How are you suppose to open the hood?

The new 5 Series is supposed to be the most reliable car ever produced, so you shouldn't need to open the hood. ;) In rare emergencies, just use a sawzall.

With all the plastic covers and padding that new cars have these days the engine is for all practical purpose sealed so you don't really need that hood.

Not only the hood is missing a line, but also the side mirrors seem different.

No. It still sounds ridiculous. No matter who produces it- Lexus, M-B, BMW, Audi- I still think it's too many. Sorry to burst your bubble, thinking that we're completey biased towards name-brands only.

You know, a semi has something like 16 gears, we're barely half there ;)

What I want to know is at what point a CVT becomes more practical with "virtual gears" rather than a box full of cogs that weighs a ton.

Guaranteed that's exactly what many will say about the 8-Speed. Car and Driver will certainly deem it the best due to the fact that BMW is doing it.

that's a 5-series front end on a 3-series body. Look how small the trunk decklid is and the shape of the tail lights -- that's a 3-series. Swap the 5-series dragon headlights with some teardrop shaped ones and recolor the tailights to match the new X5 and presto, you have these images.

Good thing about German designs, they can hide behind their big grills to copy others.

Quite an argument you have there, BUCKFUSH, seeing that BMW not only spurred the "emotional" design revolution- but the 7 Series also pioneered the major technology push that many luxury automakers are participiating in. Without the 7 Series, there would be so much less in today's luxury class.

Looks better than today's 5, but as stated above, looks like a 3-5 morph.

I'd rather see a back end that looks more like the 335 coupe than the sedan.

If this is how it really is, why does BMW keep making the 5 series more agressive than the 3. That dosen't make sense to me. I think the 3 should be more sporty in looks as well as personality. I love it though.

about the 8 speeds gearbox... for one i think that 7 is one too many, quite simply because of overall ratio being comprised roughly between 8 and 12, therefore moving from 5 to 6 speed makes mathematical sense, when moving from 6 to 7 makes less of it, and from 7 to 8 making none, besides the fact that moving through too many gears is fuel consuming, let alone engine wearing...
Now if at some point BMW, and others, do use an 8er (by ZF, most likely) people might find it better than that of Lexus (repeat MIGHT) because of its particular architecture, something innovative about it (listen Lexi fans), unlike the one on the new LS, with is technically less advanced than the 6 speed gearbox from BMW (google for proof, it's everywhere!), because it's heavier, shifts slower, consumes more fuel by losing more power on the way to the wheels, and as mentioned above, too much shifting (one of the main reasons the Hybrid advantages are off-set on the LS 600h), has a less advanced shift strategy, etc...
IMO the 8er on Lexi is just marketing, and excellent at that, i have to say...!

i love the direction BMW is going with their exterior designs, although the photo shopper might be a very accurate person most of the time, im sure the trunk lid will be at least a little bigger than the one here, nonetheless this car looks amazing, if bmw actually makes this, then it will kill every competitor there is for this car.

A little while ago I was seriously considering purchasing a new vehicle, although I don't really need one (I'd like to keep my cars for a while), with the Audi S5 leading the way if I decided to go with another coupe or the Infiniti G35 Sedan if I decided to go sedan route. But, 2009-2010 looks like will feature some nice car choices from everyone, including a new Acura TL (I like the current design, will be interesting to see what they do for the next), new BMW 5-series and more. Think I might have to wait it out to see what's coming out. I'm not even a dodge fan, but the new Challenger has me intrigued, as does the new Camaro (I'm still young and for some reason I feel "old" when thinking about buying a Benz or a BMW)... dunno

If they made this car, I would consider buying it purely based on looks.

Reminds me a lot of the current ES/IS, so that's probably why I like the photo-chop.

But they'd have to fire Bangle before anything like this came out of BMW again.

Boy if they mess up on this car twice, the 5-series as an attractive vehicle will be a distant memory.

To me the current 5-series is for Asians & posers (especially the 525i), whenever I see a guy driving a 545i or 550i on the road they seem to stare at my car as the one they should have picked up (650i).

The 5-series has a guardian angel in the form of a propeller badge & strong legs to keep it going...If this wasn't the best driving sedan in it's class, it'd be good for nothing.

It's quite simple. This new drawing of what may be the 2010 5 series shows better lines in result better styling. There is no doubt the M5 has great performance but the styling unfortunately does not compliment the performance. As for the entry level 5 series they are still luxurious and comfortable but the exterior design is horrid.

I hope the next gen is much improved in terms of design. Their engines and transmissions run very smoothly as all of the BMW models that I have been in.

Can't wait.

It even has hints of the Peugeot 607.

We all can see where the inspiration for this photoshop came from though, and it's definitely not the CS (only thing in common are the 4 doors and tires and the propellor head badge).

This is unbelievable, it seems like all the german car fans are giving "minus boost" for anybody who might have a difference of opinion to German cars like BMW. Please the just like you guys praise bmw and audi and ridicule Lexus, even other users should be able to voice their opinion (bad or good) against a german brand. Such biased group of bloggers. And beside anybody can tell that this is a photoshop job of M3 look alike headlights on a 3 series body. Look at the sloping sidelines, the shape of the backside, and the characteristic lines of a 3 series from bonnet to lower front panels, however they have cleverly used the grill of current 5 series for the depiction. I support neither german cars nor japaneese cars, I am a ferrari man.
