Production kicks off for the 2009 Nissan Maxima
Like it or hate it; the first production model of the new 2009 Nissan Maxima today rolled off the assembly line at the company’s North America Smyrna Tennessee plant.

Built on Nissan’s new D platform the 2009 Maxima is said to provide responsive handling and eliminates the torque steer due to high-horsepower front-wheel-drive cars. Power comes from a 3.5 liter V6 engine that produces 290-hp (35 more than the outgoing model) and 261 lb-ft of torque. Fuel-economy for the 2009 Nissan Maxima is estimated at 19/26mpg city/highway.

Nissan will offer the new Maxima in two trim-levels including a 3.5 S and 3.5 SV. Both are scheduled to arrive in dealerships later this summer. Pricing...

I quite like this car. I'm anxious to see it as a 2009 replacement for my 2007 Acura TL. I really like that they've downsized it.

Those headlights haven't won me over but the last 3 or 4 versions of this car seem to have pushed the envelope and so I applaud nissan. They stay much farther away from 'safe' than toyota and honda

I like the front end, from the back of the bonnet and fenders forward it looks very much like the Volvo S80, a good thing in my book.

I agree I think Nissan has a car that does not look just like all the others. I think thats a selling point. I also like the fact that this car looks more grown up. The Maxima's in the past always reminded me of a middle aged person trying to drive something young. With this car you could be young or old and it will still look good on you.

I agree. It doesn't look like anything else out there. It reminds me of the Maxima's 02-03 ad slogan, which was "Cars like it: 0". I'm still trying to get used to the headlights. They probably look better in person. Luckily, I work at a Nissan dealer, so I'll be able to take a really good look at one when they are released.

Yea, it doesnt look like anything out there. Anything except a Volvo or scion from the front, and a civic or crossfire from the rear.

This thing is trying to be different for the sake of trying to be different. Hardly anything earth-shaking, and still in the shadow of its little brother, the alti SE.

I expexted nissian to go bold as usaul whith this design but im sorry to say that this does look loike a hond or toyota, (the same problem acura has with moving high end honda look-alikes)the rear end looks better then the funny looking headlights and 90's looking grille on the front.

Is this the latest trend for the Japanese car designers? Cars that looked like they have been wrecked? Could they not take a picture with a car that doesn't have broken headlights at least?

It would be interesting to see a comparison test of the new Maxima vs. the '09 Mazda 6
