RECALL FRIDAY: GM Recalls 857,000 SUV For Faulty Wiper Systems
General Motors Corp. is recalling 857,735 vehicles equipped with a heated windshield wiper fluid system for a potential short-circuit problem, according to federal safety regulators.

A short-circuit in the system may cause other electrical features to malfunction, create an odor or cause smoke, increasing the risk of a fire, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site.

The # of people that actually pay attention to a minor recall like this is very small. Typically a dealer will simple fix the problem if the car is brought in for a routine service or something else and fix the problem as it will be posted on a TSB for the service tech once they start working on the car.

I hope people understand this in that there are not almost 1 million owners suddenly rushing to a dealer to have it fixed.

Don't just pick on GM. Many manufacturers have had recalls, from top to bottom. Sometimes the supplier may send a bad batch of something.

You're right...Honda ranked second, behind Ford in recalls in Germany in 2007

are you kidding? This RECALL is not just for one of their brands or models....

"The recall involves the 2007-2008 model year Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, Avalanche and Suburban, Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT, GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL and Saturn Outlook; 2006-2008 Hummer H2, Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne; and the 2008 Buick Enclave."

GREAT! electrical problems that increases risk of fire (burned alive) just as they are Hyping up their "electric" car the Volt. You're concerned about BMW air bags not working and the Toyota sludge? I'm way more concerned about being burned alive!

http://www.businessweek.com/autos/content/aug2007/bw20070810_455098.htm

"While General Motors (GM), DaimlerChrysler (now Chrysler LLC), and Ford led the list in 2006, Toyota saw a departure from its quality-obsessed character—recalling nearly 1.5 million vehicles worldwide, spanning every single model line produced that year (see BusinessWeek.com, 7/19/06, "The Most Recalled Cars 2006").

This year the bombshell on the list was Volkswagen of America, which recalled more than a million New Beetles because of a faulty brake light switch (in both the 2007 and older lines), and some 58,000 Passats for a fragile vacuum line. The company predicts that only about 30% to 35% of the vehicles in this recall are faulty but advises all owners of affected models to visit their local dealer."

damnikco,

If it's not that big a deal, why even RECALL it?

What if you're cruising on the freeway and everything shuts down due to a "very small" short-circuit in the system may cause other electrical features to malfunction.

Lemonade,

Firstly, manufacturers have to recall a part if a certain percentage of these vehicles in the field have failed, and the failure threshold for recall is very low. Thus, automakers are more keen on recalling them before the Fed Authorities get involved to avoid massive bad PR, etc. Seriously, if you short circuit something in your car, a fuse will blow, quickly. If you overdrive an electric device that is being driven from your ECM/TCM/BCM, there are internal current shunts that shut the individual system down until the next drive cycle, and might possible set the Check-Engine-Light. Probability of anything going wrong in a dangerous manner is something like 1 in many many millions.

Just goes to show, the more electronics and doo-dads we demand on our cars, the more likelyhood something can go wrong. Can't fault GM for this, things like this happen. Just like in society, you are going to have some bad apples, regardless of environment and breeding. This kind of thing happens to all OEM's.

amazinBimmer,

you sound just like a bunch of spoiled, rich-kid friends on mine. It's the stereotypical spoiled know-it-all rich kid who gets a BMW when they turn 16 ( most likely just like you) who've completely turned me off of BMW. Please stop talking, i'll put money that you've never put an honest day's work in your whole life.
