RECALL FRIDAY: Mercedes Benz Wants 103,000 SUVs Back For Power Steering Issues

Mercedes-Benz has recalled almost 103,000 sport utility vehicles because of a defect that could cause a loss of power steering, U.S. safety regulators said on Thursday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said 102,954 Mercedes M-Class SUVs from model years 1998 to 2003 were covered by the recall.

A clamp used to secure a cooling hose for power-steering systems on the vehicles may not hold with enough force, NHTSA said in the recall notice posted on its website.

009, you should be using a picture of the PREVIOUS generation M-Class since that is the model the recall affects.

When there is a recall for a glove box latch from one of the big 3 US car companies everyone would be on here saying how much of a POS they are. If it's a German car with an issue that could potentially kill you no one cares. Of course if it were a Lexus or some other Asian car no one would hear about it because the mainstream press won't report on it.

Let me also add to this that I own both a GMC Yukon and BMW 3 series. I've owned the BMW for 7 years and the Yukon for 5. Neither have had any issues aside from normal maintenance. The people on here saying how crappy US vehicles are extremely misled... Or, they’re the ones trying to mislead.

Saying that this is an issue "that could potentially kill you" is like saying a butter knife could potentially kill you. The potential is there, but hardly as dramatic as you would make it seem. Loss of power steering underway isnt a big deal or have you never driven a car without power steering?

I agree, really is no Big Deal... They, M-B probably used the same power steering that Saturn uses in their Vue, which by the way is German.

Last gen M was plagued by recalls, so nothing extreme. Of course this is nowhere as bad as Lexus having to replace floormats. That was the worst recall in the history of recalls.

...because Lexus had only issues with floor-mats, right? You got to be kidding..

"The voluntary safety recall is part of a larger global recall of 215020 Lexus models to fix faulty fuel pipes in the engine compartment"

A possible crack may form over time in two specific fuel pipes in the engine compartment in the affected models.

Combined with other factors such as the presence of corrosive agents in the fuel, a crack may form in the high-stress areas over time that could lead to fuel leakage."

Happens to every manufacturer, also it's more embarassing to MB as for Nissan or Hyundai.

The World's Worst Mercedes continues to live up to its name. This is unacceptable from Mercedes. I'm glad they have abandoned those ways of cost cutting.

star,
News to you, but everyone has had recalls for cracked fuel lines (including BMW and Audi and VW). It seems everyone uses the same crappy supplier.
You really think that laying low will make me forget all your stupid comments?

Rupert,
Was wondering where you went.. Got news for you, my cousin from England replied to me that its common knowledge most of the UK (around 60%) doesn't consider itself European, hence why they're always trying to keep their systems and culture separate from the mainland.
Figures that I'm right as usual as I consider the UK too smart to be European. It seems you're just one of the odd-men out.
She just purchased a property in Dubai so soon I'll be able to give you information on that useless area of the world. You never mentioned that the UK still posts speed limits in MPH instead of KM. A bit of an oversite if you actually live there and drive.

I love how your cousin is the bible on all opinions of Europe. He probably reads the Daily Mail. And did I ever deny that we use MPH? We always have. We use the metric system for all other measurements though, bar buying things like milk or meat. It's a bit of a hybrid system - we measure fuel consumption in MPG, but buy fuel in litres. Many British people may not consider themselves European, but they're happy to take advantage of all the perks, ie holidaying easily, bringing as much booze and cigarettes as you can from the EU (Portugal to Poland), no import taxes, foreign cars, foreign money (Like our airports run by British airports authority, which is owned by grupo ferrovial, or Bentley owned by VW), and the ease of buying property abroad. I am of no doubt that without all the assitance we have got from Europe over the past years we would not be in such a position as we are now, and I think that most British people, given the right information and proper questions, would agree.
Britain has always been a bit distant from Europe, btu a nice bridge between it and America. It's because we're an island. My French-American friend, who has lived in Paris and Washington DC, said what a nice compromise Britain is between France and the States.

It looks like a problem for Mercedes has turned into a "issue " on this forum . Problems are fixed , issues are discussed

Star,
LOL, there you go again, thinking if you say it enough times people will believe you. Nice comeback, provided absolutely nothing to counter my points.

I doubt anyone here is surprised you had nothing to say. Weak, just like a person who can barely lease a BMW.

huu76 "provided absolutely nothing to counter my points"

LOL...What points...you never made any point. The simple fact that you drive a Jeep completely destroys your credibility as a "claimed to be" car enthusiast.

Who cares about what a guy that owns a Jeep has to say about the ultimate driving machine? Nobody really...Is like you say that you can only afford to eat beans every day but think that caviar sucks.

BMW and Mercedes build cars for people who want the best in automotive and have the means to afford the best. The Japanese imitators only offer 50% of the German driving experience for a steep 80% price of the real thing. Buying Japanese is Not a good deal but gives the poorer part of the population a little taste of what the rich experience.

However, there is only one way to experience the real automotive perfection and of course I'm talking about buying one of the German masterpieces build by the gods of automotive themselves...BMW and Mercedes.

BMW and Mercedes build cars for people who can afford them. So why are you acting like you're one of those people?

Did mom and dad takeaway your internet for the summer? Or could you not handle the last thumping I gave you?

Can't wait to hear what new excuse you come up with to try and weasel your way out. Might I suggest you remind people again how you think you outwitted me.

The hole your digging just gets deeper and deeper and deeper and...
