RECALL WEDNESDAY: VW Wants 4000 Passats And Tiguans Back For Idle Surge
Volkswagen is recalling approximately 4,000 of its 2008 Passats and Passat Wagons, along with the 2009 Tiguan. The automaker will fix engine control module software that can trigger an unexpected increase in engine rpm, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall has started, and dealers are being told by the federal government not to sell or lease affected vehicles until the safety recall has been completed, according to recall documents posted on the NHTSA Web site

not all cars are built equally auto001. rusting issues aren't what anyone would like in any car.

oh and kpaxx, I would like to see where VW made a full buyback on their products to their customers, which gives them very good credibility on customer satisfaction. oh and I'm not a toyota fanboy and toyota doesn't interest me at all, but what toyota did to their tacoma customers was really good work when helping their customers. all automakers should learn what they did to help aid their customers.

Again, the ignorant sheep spewing garbage.
VW is the number 1 car seller in Europe. NUMBER 1. The reason? VW makes great, super reliable cars... much better cars than Honda and Toyota and Europeans appreciate that.
The clueless American car buyer who's only contact with the car world is Consumer Reports fails to understand these simple facts.

What kind of miserable human being can believe that reliability is an issue in modern cars and that the car brand that is number 1 seller in Europe makes unreliable cars??? Are you for REAL? Lobotomy patients could make quicker connections than you do. WTF!

Consumer Reports cannot recommend the V6 Camry (or the Tundra) because of reliability concerns but they do recommend the Rabbit, Jetta and Eos. CR has also said that VWAG's and Mercedes' cars are on their "Dean's list" as being the best. So ... Star is right.

VWs suck. i work for a computer company and the owner of that company also had a VW dealership on the same compound. I dont like anything about VWs, maybe just the sound of the horn. A VW polo classic is the worst car i have ever driven in my life, and i have driven alot of cars due to the fact that my employer also sells used japanese vehicles. the VWs used to give so much trouble that my employer had to shut down the VW dealership. these cars a realy poorly built especially they interiors. the look so expensive when they are brand new. but they dont hold up well with time and by time i mean about 3 years. we still have lots of them parked in the garage, some won't start atall, and alot of them have transmission problems. so no matter what anyone has to say about VW, i know better.

Volkswagen Clinches Top Rankings in Latest Quality Surveys

Jan 24, 2008

The latest Golf came out the winner in the 2008 DEKRA Mängelreport’s survey of the compact class with a mileage of between 60,000 and 90,000 kilometres. The Touran achieves similar success in the report. Not only did it attain the highest ranking in this mileage class among vans, but it also came out tops among vehicles with 30,000 to 60,000 kilometres on the clock. These rankings serve to underscore the consistent high standard in quality of these popular models made in Wolfsburg, given that the 2008 DEKRA Mängelreport bases its findings on research done on some 15 million vehicles over a period of two years. The most important new aspect of the survey was the evaluation of deficiencies by mileage classes. DEKRA says this classification is a far more accurate indicator of the technical condition of a vehicle than vehicle age alone.

The Golf also clinched a very positive third ranking in the 2008 AutoBild TÜV Report’s survey of automobiles aged two to three years. Only 2.2 per cent of all the Golfs examined in this age class revealed any deficiencies – a result which is well above average (4.8 per cent). This, Germany’s biggest used-car report, based its findings on around seven million general inspections of 194 different models in total.

Volkswagen wins awards

What Car? Award 2008: Double for Volkswagen, Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI - Best Small Family CarVolkswagen Eos 2.0 TSI - Best Open Top Car.

Wednesday, January 23 - 2008 at 10:46

Recently Volkswagen scored victories all over Europe. Germany's Automobile Association ADAC presented its 'Yellow Angel' award to Europe's biggest carmaker in Munich.

A few hours later in London, Volkswagen won the prestigious 'What Car? Award' in two categories.

The Golf 1.4 TSI was named 'Best Small Family Car' for the second year running amidst fierce competition. The ten-man journalist jury from the UK's top-selling motoring magazine was looking for the 'small family friend' among numerous vehicle types. The car needed to provide sufficient space and protection for adults, children and their luggage when traveling on motorways, in town and in commuter traffic. One decisive criterion was certainly the fact that over 70,000 Golfs were sold in the British Isles last year.

Dr Rüdiger Szengel, head of petrol engine development, said, 'I am extremely proud. This award confirms the international success of our innovative TSI engines. By using this concept, Volkswagen has managed to reduce consumption and, at the same time, increase performance.'
The Eos also recently picked up an award in London for the second time in succession. In the category 'Best Open Top Car', the What Car? editors voted in favour of the Volkswagen by a clear majority. They were impressed by both the powerful 2.0-litre TSI engine and als

They were impressed by both the powerful 2.0-litre TSI engine and also the excellent design that is rounded off by the five-part folding roof.

Commenting on the awards, Mr. Hans-Dieter Keller, Managing Director of Volkswagen Middle East said, 'The Eos has already proved to be a very popular vehicle within the Middle East region, with sales exceeding targets. The Golf continues to be an icon car throughout the globe, winning award after award. Receiving two more awards for those models is a testament to the excellent standards and engineering that has been set as a benchmark for Volkswagen.'

bulldogz,

That's not the point. You still don't get it, do you?
It is not VW, it's the brainwashed sheep who read the fairy-tales from Consumer Reports for years.

Can you tell me what is the difference between you and the dumbest, most clueless car buyer? How are exactly your opinions different? Let me tell you something, they are not different. Your opinion coincides with the opinion of the people who don't know ANYTHING about cars, people that don't take any interest in cars. That alone should make you question the amount of knowledge you poses in this field.
Again, if you ask any idiot on the street to give his opinion about cars he will say exactly what people like you, htay7500, flozel1 and other sheep here will say. There is no difference between the sheep in this forums vs the sheep outside the car forums other than the fact that the sheep here dares to contradict people who are specialists in this domain, like me. What makes you think you can tell someone like me that is wrong? The fact that you looked at a few car comparisons in some stupid mags? Shut up and listen to what I'm saying and you will probably learn something that will help you in the future at least when it comes to car buying.

Hey sheep,

Who are the owners of Corollas, Civics, Camrys and Accords?
Only idiots who never owned a good car in their life and think that the trash Toyota and Honda sold them is the best. What can they compare it with idiot, if they keep buying the same c**p over and over again without even looking at way superior engineered cars like VW because the brainwashing machinery made them unresponsive to reality. Consumer Reports counts opinions about cup holders as overall reliability. Do you understand that? Do you want ME to buy a car based on opinions(I repeat opinions, not facts)some retards have about their cars? I KNOW for a fact that VW builds much better cars than Toyota and Honda and no mag who collects data from people with IQs lower than 50 is going to tell me what is better. Like I said when your opinion coincides with the one the average idiot car buyer has, you cannot call yourself a car enthusiast. Period.

Why does anyone waste their breath arguing with someone who claims VW is more reliable than Toyota? Here is a quote directly from the mouth of the CEO of Volkswagen in USA Today on May 15, 2008, "VW did a lot of things wrong" to earn a U.S. reputation as unreliable and costly to maintain. What does it say to you that the CEO of Volkswagen admits they have serious reliabilitiy issues in the U.S. yet some moron on this board claims they don't? Who would know better, the CEO of the company or the moron on this board? And then the moron blames the "stupid" Americans because VW sends crap cars to the U.S. What a genius!

oh,...another idiot. You don't really understand that the VW CEO had to do that, not because of the quality of the cars which is outstanding, but for "political correctness" which is a requirement for any business in US.

VW didn't do anything wrong but they had only two choices in order to answer a question like: why their cars don't sell in US. The choices were: call the American car buyer an idiot(which is the correct answer), or blame themselves(which is politically correct)for it. It's a business, so they did what they had to do.

VW does well in Europe because of the diesels VW offers and those Europeans grew up with these piss poor quality cars so they can't think outside of the box. They don't realize the superior quality of Japanese cars because they've never driven or lived with one... For example, Alfa Romeos are of even poorer quality than VWs but they still are highly regarded over there (nice styling helps here of course...), even though it may strand them on the side of the road.

So when the Volkswagen CEO also says that they are working to bring their warranty costs down, you're saying that doesn't mean that they have high warranty costs due to low quality cars but instead means that the US consumer is dumb? So you are saying that the CEO of VW lies on purpose to destroy his own company by saying that they have quality issues in the U.S. and also by saying that they have high warranty costs due to poor quality that they are trying to correct. And your argument is that warranty costs aren't high its just the CEO lying to destroy his brand. Ladies and Gentlemen, I think we have encountered the dumbest person in the world. Congratulations Star, you have shown us the inner workings of the smallest brain in the world. Nothing you have said has even a hint of logic or reason. Go suck your thumb to stop the drooling.

The VW CEO obviously lied so it can avoid directly insulting the "intelligence" of the American car buyer which he realised it would surely prove itself to be more damaging than saying that "VW did some things wrong"(which by the way doen't mean their cars are unreliable even if idiots like you would wish that). So, the VW CEO(lied like any other CEO) in order to save his company. Are you really that retarded to not understand something as simple as that? Buddy, your IQ number is a simple digit.

goojmangoojman - 6/12/2008 11:14:33 AM
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Let's examine Star's logic:
1) VW has had one of the lowest scores in reliability/quality from all of the objective reviewers for many years. This includes JD Power, Consumer Reports, Car and Driver, Edmunds, Road and Track, Motor Trend, etc.
2) VW company financials show that they have very high warranty costs to fix new cars under the warranty period especially when compared to their rivals in the U.S. market.
3) The company CEO states that "VW has done a lot of things wrong " to earn a reputation for poor quality in the US.

Star ingores all of these empirical facts and instead forms his opinion based on no facts and blames VW's U.S. problems on "stupid" Americans.
Who do you take more seriously, someone who presents an opinion and supports it with specifics facts or someone who presents their opinion with no facts and asks that you ignore empirical facts in order to accept their ridiculous opinion that flies in the face of everything we have learned over the centuires about reason, logic and argument. Read this very closely Star:

VW financials show that they have extremely high warranty costs compared to their rivals in the US market. That comes directly from their financial statements. For you to be correct, VW is cooking their accounting books and ruining their financial position, their shareholders fiannical position, their empoyees financial position and the entire reputation and lifeblood of the company. And if we are to believe your demented logic, they are doing all of this so as not to offend the US consumer. And if what you are saying is true, the CEO of VW is in charge of a car manufacturer who builds very reliable cars yet this same CEO states to the world the exact opposite and admits mistakes that aren't real and damages his company immeasurably and this all makes sense to you. I will stop now out of mercy to you. I do not want to embarrass you any further. My father always told me never to argue with a retard and I should have listened.

You still don't get it??? The VW CEO had only TWO possibilities: call the American car buyers clueless or say that VW did something wrong. There was no answer in between. Jacoby, who took over U.S. operations on Sept. 1, said VW will "custom tailor" VWs for U.S. tastes. He said U.S. buyers appear to like "soft-riding" cars that don't need high top speeds because of "speed limits that are much more rigorously enforced" than in Germany.

But he emphasized that U.S. VWs won't be sloppy-handling or sluggish.

Jacoby acknowledged that VW "did a lot of things wrong" to earn a U.S. reputation as unreliable and costly to maintain. But he said improved quality — "our warranty costs are down considerably" — and a new three-year free maintenance offer should raise perceptions.

-

Riight, consumer car magazines in Europe such as What Car magazine consistently praise VW for their quality because they've never driven Japanese cars. <----Sarcasm

Example:

VW Passat

Quality & reliability Quality & reliability rating - 4 out of 5

Volkswagen has a reputation for quality and the Passat mostly lives up to this. It looks appealing and the switchgear operates with a precise action, but some hard, flimsy plastics on the lower dash let the side down a bit. The mechanical parts are proven and shouldn't give trouble.

-

Toyota Prius

Quality & reliability Quality & reliability rating - 4 out of 5

The hard interior plastics aren't especially appealing, but they feel solid and durable. The Prius also has a great record in the JD Power customer satisfaction survey, with owners rating mechanical reliability as one of its strongest areas.
