We’ve discussed how vehicle crashes are linked to a number of factors such as driver distraction, driver age, and crash avoidance technologies, but a new study has now examined how crashes relate to the physical condition of roadways.

The study by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) found that roadway conditions affect the cost and severity of crashes more than when alcohol or speeding were involved, or the cost of not using seat belts.

I will agree with this. Here in Jamaica our roads contribute to thousands of accidents per year. Dodging potholes, to actually hitting them and losing control, I've heard it all.

Mostly it is the drivers fault. The thing is that if the Govt use all of the gas tax funds like it was intended for the roads over all would be in better condition throughout the US.

Maybe if they actually repaved a road instead of filled holes that end up sagging into dips, and using tar to fill cracks.

In my neighborhood in Ohio years ago before I moved back to CT, it was all conrecte. With sections separated by a tar/fiberous material to allow expansion and contraction with the seasons and weather. They never cracked, never wore out, and never had issues of being replaced or fixed up all the time.
