So, we've seen the 991 throughout its testing process quite extensively. We still don't know exactly what new upgrades Porsche has in store for us. We just know one thing is for sure: the cars will definitely not feature KERS.
The new word on the street is that the 991 will have a seven-speed transmission. That's not too out of the ordinary, right?
Oh yeah, it will have a clutch pedal too.
Uh, what!? I assume that means Porsche would just give the gearbox a dog leg for seventh?
The thing about seven gears though: to me it seems to muddy up the driving experience. Is it me or does seven speeds just seem like too much?
More isn’t always better. We’ll agree in terms of power, but respectfully pass when we’re talking about weight. Transmission gears? We’re not sure. Some recent automatics have featured seven and eight forward ratios (and ZF has even announced a nine-speed auto), but the maximum for traditional clutch-and-lever manual transmissions has been six for some time. That’s about to change, however, because we’ve confirmed from various corporate sources that Porsche will offer a seven-speed manual in the next-generation 911, a development we first reported last November...
