According to reports, Porsche is bringin' it back! Yup, it's the infamous 550 nameplate that made headlines years ago, which is said to be slated for a return in several years.

Said to be smaller than the current-generation Boxster, sources are implying the 550 will be based upon the upcoming Volkswagen Bluesport concept, which will also appear as an Audi. Expect Porsche's take to have around 200 horsepower, have a standard gearbox -- maybe a PDK option, too -- and price in under the Boxster.

This will give Porsche the power to move the Boxster upmarket as it inherits more technology and more powerful motors.

From the 550 though, don't expect too much because this is suppose to be a back-to-basics vehicle. So, imagine a manual top, much like the Boxster Spyder, and for Porsche to keep it simple. How simple? It's just too early to tell. But when you put together a lightweight, simple vehicle, you usually get stellar results.

More details on the much-rumoured 'baby' Porsche have emerged, courtesy of our sources in Germany. The new model, which will be based on a mid-engined platform debuted by the VW Bluesport concept, is set to carry the legendary 550 tag of the original 50s Spyder.

It is also set to feature an all-new engine – a 1.6-litre flat-four-cylinder 'boxer' unit. This will be turbocharged giving a power output of around 200bhp. Driving the rear wheels through a conventional manual gearbox – although a PDK twin-clutch could be offered too – the new sub-Boxster machine will arrive in 2014...
