Recall Friday: Honda Recalls 182,756 Civics For Jettisoning Wheels
Honda Motor Co. is recalling 182,756 Civic sedans, the automaker's second-best selling U.S. model, to fix an O-ring on the wheel bearing that may leak and cause the wheel to fall off, Bloomberg News reported today.

The recall, affecting 2006 and 2007 model-year Civics, was reported on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Web site.

The O-ring may not seal properly, allowing water to seep into the wheel bearing and damage it, Honda said in a letter on the NHTSA Web site. "This could cause a wheel to fall off of the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash," Tokyo-based Honda said.

Honda said it will notify owners by mail and replace any damaged parts for free.

Reminds me of the time a few decades ago when a turbine-engined car was winning Indy by a lap and lost the race because a two-dollar bearing quit on the final lap.

I wonder if they use those crappy Nachi bearing. I used a couple of these in my race cars and they grenaded about ~10 laps in one of my practice sessions.

The operative phrase here is 'may not seal properly'...

There's probably little to no chance of this ever occurring, but it's good of them to do the right thing here and remove/replace.

Note: Now watch the Honda Haters start a-flammin'

It's deceiving because Honda did not fully disclose its use of el-cheapo components on this vehicle. For me, its another good reason not to buy a Honda.

Fair play to Honda for issuing the recall. Like i've previously said though, all makes of car suffer problems from time to time. There is no perfect car, they're all designed by humans unfortunately.

I'll take a Toyota over a Honda any day. I'm pissed at Honda because the otherwise fabulous 2008 Accord V-6 is still a SOHC instead of DOHC engine and therefore off my shopping list for sure.

EL34,
Get some originality. Your lame attempt at sounding philosphical is so yesterday, much like a German car.

Here's one for you.

We have to have wheels on our cars in order to drive don't we?

Honda should think about that the next time they design a car.

Huu ... resevoir cap that is why you posted the article to show flaws of BMW's. That is pathetic... nice try ... I do believe that toyota and honda have had ALOT more recalls in the last 2 years than BMW has. Isnt toyota and honda supposed to be the most reliable and not have such recalls. I thought " Reliability " is their strong point ...lol ..But apparently, you do not need your wheels when driving.

They are losing reliability because they now are in the big leagues and are suffering the woes of mass production at a high rate of speed. When you sell a lot of cars, you must make them faster and get them out more quickly, thus a less cars get inspected at the point of the end of the production line. My uncle works for Nissan (Infiniti division here in the US) and he said this is one of the reasons for quality issues. GM and Ford have had this problem for years cause they sold well and had to pump out a ton of vehicles. Costs rise, companies look for cheaper parts, companies to make the parts faster to keep up with demand.... thus you are gonna have issues. Like someone said before, humans make them. I just wish people would stop bad mouthing when an American or European company has a recall and praise the Japanese for having a recall... junk is junk, period. And my brother's Civic has had 4 recalls (this makes the 5th) and has had power window issues 2 times that has not been recalled. Maybe the Japanese companies afre now feeling the effects of being on top, like the original Big 3 did....

I hope Honda doesn't push themselves any further or else lead to more problems, like toyota. reason to how MB also suffered late 90's into the late 00's. now making huge improvements.

Actually the reason Mercedes-Benz had a quality low-point during that time-frame was cost-cutting ordered by a new-look management that tried running a tighter ship.

They soon realised a tarnished reputation would cost more in the long-run than quality electrical systems.

Honda appears to be falling into the trap of squeezing the last penny of profit out of the product by using el cheapo components. They also appear to have a corporate culture that encourages abuse of their brand by failing to deliver on its promise. This will lead to Honda's eventual demise if not checked early.

Maybe they should call chrysler and source their patented "no leak" gaskets and seals.

You just expect this stuff from "big three" US auto makers. It takes an act of <National Higher Power> to get them to recall. Remember Fight Club recall Math? Honda has to protect it's cred since they still have some.

To the Germans,
It's only a surprise because we rarely ever hear Honda with any significant recalls (a drivers manual typo is considered a recall).
http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2007/01/2006_recalls_do.html
Honda's true recalls that year amounted to approx 1300.

Engine fires, electrical fires, brakes that don't work, leaky fuel pumps. Just another day in the Deutschland (or Mexico depending which car you buy).
The Germans are entitled to have a good year every once in a while.

Anyway, the main selling point for German cars is exclusivity and driving dynamics. We all know how they've fallen behind in dynamics and it's hard to be exclusive when even MB prices against Corollas.
I didn't realize MB cut another $1500 off the "extremely exclusive" B-class ($29,900 is Canada's price as well).

So the Japanese had an off year in 2005. So far the Germans are leading in 2007 with VW nearly beating the next 13 in the list combined.
http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2007/08/the-most-recall.html

Even Maserati had a software recall similiar to the Prius' engine software but everyone jumps all over that because it's Toyota.

Let's see, IS350 faster than 330i.
IS250 outhandles BMW 3 in Europe.
The old IS300 was penalized in a comparison for outsporting the 3-series.
STi can outrun (unless it has 12 cylinders) and outhandle pretty much everything (rain or shine).
The Supra TT and NSX did 10 years ago what the Germans are boasting about now.
Corvette, Viper and Shelby Cobra can do whatever the Germans can at 1/4th the price.
Hell, the RAM SRT10 and F150 Lightning can outrun most of the Fatherland's offerings...and you can pull tree stumps with them too.

Want any more news?

Oh how could I forget this guy, designed to take on the Enzo and (plug your ears) nearly keeps up (while only needing 8 cylinders to do it). Not bad for something worth $140,000 (pocket change to all the ppl on this site right?)
