Recall Monday: Volkswagen Recalls Every Gasoline Passat Made From 1999 to 2005
Volkswagen AG is recalling some 410,000 Passat sedans sold in the United States due to potential problems with heat shields and fuel line components, the German automaker said on Friday.

Europe's largest carmaker said it would voluntarily recall all gasoline-powered Passats it had sold from the 1999 through 2005 model years for inspection and possible repair.

The wide recall marks a setback for VW at a time when it has set ambitious targets for growth in the U.S. market and is considering building a new auto plant in North America.

Good for VW for being proactive! This demonstrates their commitment to their customers.

"This demonstrates their commitment to their customers."

especially to the dealers who do tend to do the opposite...

Yea, but they recycled the old toyotas to make filters for the VW beatles that are older than the most u c on the road today.

VW is quality. Toyota is just an disposable toy. besides look; Bugatti and Lambs relie on VW technology.

You two would rather drive a Toyota than a Ferrari?

Now I know you're nuts.

a LOT depends on the respective conditions.

a few years back, i had use of my sis-in-law's porsche 924. but it was ill-maintained, RATTY, unreliable, prone to NOT START when hot. and of course, it also required contortions to get in and out of.

i was MOST HAPPY to return to my trusty, still like new, 70k mile NISSAN TRUCK.

They got the memo, and it was on Friday.

But I can't let a good recall go unannounced, especially since this one isn't Japanese.

They actually sold that many Passats in that time period. That's what is amazing.

Good thing VW sales have been soft, the dealers with have some slack in their service departments to get all 410,000 in for repair/examination on a timely basis.

(So does this extend to the cars which also use the VW Passat's engines...the W-16 Bugatti (two passat W-8's connnected) and the W-12 Audi's, Phaeton's, and Bentley's?)...maybe they announced the VW recall on Monday, so they could announce Bugatti, Bentley, and Audi recalls on Friday when nobody would notice.

:-)

That's not good.

Surprise, surprise, another case of "fuel line" problems.

I'd love to be the company who got this contract, seems they supply every automaker now.

Every automaker has irate customers. On this site, however, there seems to be a crowd of uninformed people who love to worship a brand name without comparing real objective data. Thanks to the internet, rumours and second-hand gossip supplants reality.

Let's compare personal experience. For the record, my brother's Tacoma has been recalled. He still likes it. My friend's Passat has been flawless, and hadn't had a recall until now. I fail to see how this indicates one badge is dramatically better than another, which is why I couldn't care less about this latest recall story from the internet. Next week another automaker will have one too. Only when you agglomerate the total number AND severity of problems for a specific model can you compare, and we certainly aren't getting that here.
