Report: BMW 5-Series Diesel in US by 2009
The BMW X5 3.0d with its 3.0 liter direct injection diesel engine is on its way to the United States highways by mid-2008. One of our editors was dropping of their 3-Series for service and asked them about the X5 3.0d, which they confirmed. Then the dealer went on to tell him that the BMW 5-Series diesel will also be arriving to the United States by 2009. United States will get the BMW 530d and the BMW 535d, both which have a inline 6-cylinder engines. The BMW 530d does 0-60mph in 6.8 seconds with a fuel economy of 42.2 mpg. The BMW 535d, on the other hand, does 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and has a fuel economy of 35.2 mpg.
We expect to see more diesel options offered by BMW, such as the 3-Series diesels, due to the growing market in the United States for fuel efficient vehicles.

1995e34- in March, or maybe May. One of the "M" months this Spring.
But this is a huge case of Audi/Benz copying. I'm glad all the mainstream diesel luxo barges are coming here -FINALLY- but with the upcoming A6 3.0TDI and current E320 Bluetec, this is shameful. BMW even noted that they WOULDN'T bring diesels here, but we note that in one week both the X5 and 5er are announced with diesel variants.
By the way, won't the 5 Series be almost out of production by then?

i think copying is the wrong word. i'd say they've allowed mercedes/audi to test the waters for them marketwise. copying would be if they didn't even produce a diesel in the first place. potayto/potahto

This and the X5 diesel have been expected and planned for awhile. The X5 diesel is already in production. (for uk)

BMW announced just two months ago, mstangpny (maybe only December), that they definitely would not bring any diesels here. It was not planned; this is a surprise.

they're all just following the same market trends toward more fuel efficient cars.
but BMW is hardly "copying." two-thirds of the cars they sell in europe are diesels and they've been making diesels for decades.
also, the 5 series will be all new for the 2009 model year. i'd assume BMW will bring the diesels variants in with the new body style.

What do dealers ever know about new product offering dates? If it hasn't been leaked to the public?

next to nothing. i often find that i'm more informed than the dealers. my assumption is the corporate holds info back from the dealers as the salespeople will start to use it in a less the judicious manner.

How come BMW can get 35 miles per gallon out of a 3 litre diesel in an SUV and Daimler Chrysler cannot in the Jeep grand cherokee?

You have to leave. ANOTHER Lexus fan who's just a rich bitch. There's too many of them (the main Lexus posters aren't- but the ones who routinely get kicked off are).
I don't think you know one thing about cars, or even Lexus. What kind of Lexus does your daddy have?
"Oh, umm... a uhh 430 something? its so prettyful"
