Report: Next generation Acura NSX to get 23.5 mpg
The Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept (pictured above) was supposedly a preview of the design direction Honda was taking for the next generation Acura NSX. But it was reported in February of this year that Honda engineers ripped the whole script and went back to the drawing board since Honda executives weren’t all that pleased with the design.

Well now development is underway and Honda is not only looking to pack the V10 engine with more power and torque, but is looking to improve fuel economy over the NSX predecessors. WindingRoad is reporting that the next generation Acura NSX, with a 5.0 liter V10 engine producing 500 hp, will achieve at least 10.0 km/l (23.5 mpg) as compared to the last NSX Type R that achieved 8.6 km/l which only had a 3.2 liter V6 engine.

There’s a reason Honda is the most fuel-efficient auto maker in the world and if anyone can get 23.5 mpg from a 5.0 liter V10, its Honda.

I'm just glad they ditched that godawful looking Advanced Concept design and are starting new again. Talk about a waste of time and resources...they basically went backwards going from the lovely-looking HSC concept to this eyesore.

That would be awesome... except that's just a prediction, right? Honda has some of the best engineering on the planet, but it would be pretty hard to pull this off!

honda does not have some of the best engineering on the planet.

second this cra is never going to come out.

third how is honda going to make a v10 with 500hp, when they never had a v8 or more then 310hp.

fourth this car is really really ugly.

Honda IS one of the planets best automakers and engineers. The old NSX was great and S2000 surpassed its handling. From a $32,000 convertible sports car, I bet it beats your BMW Z4 or what ever the competition is.

Secondly, read the article. The Advanced Sport Car Concpet was killed because the executives didnt like the design. There is still a successor due to fill the NSX's spot.

BMW doesnt have a V6 in thier lineup. Whats your point? And Honda has made a V8, not for production cars, but for thier Honda Racing F1 team. Im willing to bet theyre going to have it as F1 inspired engine, like Lexus' LF-A.

Last, its a concept thats been killed off. Even if this were given a green light, it would have gone through a HUGE make over before hitting production.

i agree! LEXUS underestimates their fuel economy, because they have their own epa, because that's how rich they are. the real fuel economy of the lx470 has 120mpg... they forgot to add a zero to all their numbers. the is250 actually gets 300mpg. thats why LEXUS has the best engineering on the planet and not honda!!!!

Mmm... Lexus...

Roller215 - that was a funny comment.
I agree with S4 - Honda has great engineers - but this doesn't sound too plausible. Personally I'm skeptical of any "scoops" that egmcartech site has - they tend to give half truths are guesses.

IS-F is not in the same category as the NSX. The NSX is one of Japan's super cars. An IS-F is no where near that status. It is just a sports sedan.

for the record, i believe honda has some of the most OCD engineers out there. the last nsx is proof positive. a V6 keeping up with V12s. amazing. but as with most people who have OCD, its usually a hyperfocus on one thing. so if i were to buy a honda, it would only be the next NSX or any type r (ideally an nsx type r =D).

It should be fun to see what happens when Honda shows a production car. 200+ posts?

For comparison, the V10 M5 gets 12/18mpg according to www.bmwusa.com and it weighs 1000lbs less than the LS600hL (just wanted to reinforce the benefits of hybrid). But we know, 0-60 time is more important than mpg unless it's a Lexus.

What a battle, Honda's NSX going up against the Lexus hybrid supercar we keep hearing about, all the while burning less fuel than some dinosaur German engine.

The M5 is all about high performance. Who care about fuel economy? You want fuel economy? Get the 525i or 530i. They both gets about 20/29 mpg.

a fuel efficient super-car defeats the purpose of having one. everything on the car is supposed to be excess, from caliper size to fuel-consumption. i say make a balls-out japanese version of the new F430 (original benchmarked against the F355) and call it a day. the first NSX was a symbol of precision and just needed more grunt, though it did well with the 270-hp 3.0 L V-6. how about a mugen spec high winding version of the unit in the RL. awd and kick ass power, now that'll be a force to be reckoned with!!

I am sure that Honda will make a sound engine choice. In contrast am I the only one that would have liked to see the HSC Concept see production with a V10?

sevor,
All the funnier, a fullsize car that outweighs it by 1000lbs gets significantly better mileage.

Maikazu
If you want to compare, then the GS450h is only 1/2 second slower than the M5 and practically matches the slow as stink 530i in mileage.

Dre,
No, not the V10 LF-A.

The FT-HS concept, which it appears would use a V6. The lower prices drop for hybrid parts, the more likely a similiar car will see production.

I am not surprised that "Honda executives weren’t all that pleased with the design." The Corvette has been done already. No need for Acura to repeat it.

I agree with Steve, the ASC is not ugly but it isn't particularly special looking...ACURA needs to bring out something really special if it wants to live up to the NSX name - they should start by keeping it mid-engined. Acura has said they have done the NSX and don't need to do it again, hence the new look and configuration - I say that's part of Acura's problem, how are they ever going to compete with exotic nameplates if they keep on ripping up the blueprints of the original and starting from scratch? Ferrari and Porsche don't do this and they have the heritage to prove it. ACURA, make a plan and stick to it, otherwise you just get an average nameplate with the occasional great car coming thru the pipes every once in a while....
