Road Test: 760Li A Real Frill Ride From BMW
High performance or high luxury.

Usually you get one or the other, performance or pampering, but not both.

Except in the BMW 760Li -- providing pockets or purse are very deep. The 760Li is a poster child for what a car can do if you are ready, willing and able to spend some money.

One of the fabulous frills is night vision. Whether late at night or traveling in rain, snow or fog, you can feel a little safer by being able to see vehicles in the road or animals or people wandering alongside the road up to 1,000 feet.

The system employs heat-detecting sensors to spot the objects, which it shows on the navigation system screen. If it gives off heat -- human or animal, car or motorcycle, it will glow on the screen.

Thanks, but I'll stick with my "no-frills" luxury.

If I want a true "frill" ride, I'll buy a Miata.

The point of a full-size luxury sedan is to totally pamper you. The 7-Series represents a compromise on luxury for the sake of "track performance." My first comment was intended as sarcasm, but now I'll stick by it. If I want a track performance-oriented car, I'll buy a Porsche GT2, not a 7-Series. Likewise, if I want a premium luxury sedan, I'll buy an LS460L, S55, or A8L, all of which exceed the 7-Series in luxury.

Tell me why then all these car companies copied the 7er interior look, which BMW had from 2002 now. I think that BMW is ahead of its time. Now BMW is ready to ditch that interior eveybody copied and move to the next level! Although they copied they did add their own touches. but still BMW comes up with the ideas, the rest follows the blue and white propeller!

Isnt the S63 performance and luxury, how bout the Audi S8 or the A8L for that matter? Will you are contradicting yourself as usual. Premium Luxury sedan also has prestige, status, ego, penoche, performance, luxury, fit and finish, feel, & drive. I will give Lexus its due in regards to a great feel and luxury ride but how in Gods green earth can you ever use LS460L in the same sentence as S55, 760LI? You are on some good stuff. Have you ever driven the 760Li? For that matter have you driven the S550 or S600? If not, then go and do so and try to convince anyone on here that your precious Lexus even can hold a candle to those cars. The solid feel and drive of the top of the line German cars is 2nd to none. That includes the athletic Audi S8, the Power and prestige of the S600 and the sleekness and powerful BMW 760Li.

forgot the Maserati ... my bad on that one. I have not driven the LS600hl yet, but i am sure i will soon. I have driven the LS460L extensively and it is nowhere near the same level as the other premium luxury sedans.

No comparison to the LS600hL.

Actually it sells less than 20 units per month.

First of all, did you people catch my correction? There was supposed to be a zero on the end of "S55" to say "S550." No, I don't want an AMG S-Class either. An S550 is perfectly fine for me is the point I'm trying to make.

The LS460L is quite a capable car in terms of performance, it can more than keep up with its competition in a straight line, and the new suspension setup has been hailed as a major step up from the previous model.

The S-Class, LS, and A8 surpassing the 7-Series in terms of luxury is nothing to get upset about. I said nothing shocking. BMW always loses to its competition in terms of luxury and refinement. This is also the point I'm trying to make.

The 7-Series is a brilliant performance car, clearly, but it does not represent the best in terms of luxury and refinement, which I, along with most consider more important in a premium luxury sedan. The 7-Series is a sports car with four doors, undeniably, but with that, it means it's not the car for someone looking for more luxe.

Bear in mind that the LS460 "lost" TWO comparison tests for being too "Maybach-like."

...which probably also surpasses the 7-Series in refinement.

Audi, Merecedes and many other car manufacturers have copied the Idrive. the new S looks like a more refined 7er form the inside. We will just have to wait and see what bmw will come up with next. which will give us a clue where and how Audi will react. Even according to Agent001 every car has some sort of Idrive device in it, he even said your ipod is somewhat similar to the idrive. i personally dont understand why they dont just use touch screens. its just much more convenient than turning a knob!

exterior wise ... the bangle design on the 7-series that was criticized so much for the look and style has been copied and adjusted on every new top of the line luxury saloon in the last 2 years. LS side profile is a mimc of the side profile of a 7-series. The S-class rear trunk lid is a version of the 7-series ... and so on. Was the 7-series revolutionary in 2002 for the design of the car, yes it was. Today the car with its refinements has propelled the car to sell more in 6 years than were sold over 14 years by the last 2 decades of 7-series combined.

I agree, the 7-series started a design revolution. Car designers have been bolder in their designs ever since.

A great engine that V12, but it needs an update. But for its time it was very impressive, boasting double Vanos and valvetronic combined with direct injection.
