Rumors: New Corvette to Compete with the Viper SRT10?
So the Dodge Viper SRT10 wow’ed everyone at the Detroit Auto Show just last week with its near 600 horsepower engine, it appears that the Chevy Corvette wants in on the game as well. According to sources, General Motors is planning on a Viper SRT10 rival. General Motors chairman Bob Lutz noted that it wasn’t going to let the Dodge Viper hold the title as the most powerful American sports car, yet adding that the information of future products is strictly confidential, stated in a current interview.

We can confirm this report since spy images of a Corvette test vehicle with an unique hood scoop have been caught just recently, which is a clue that Chevrolet is adding more horsepowers to its current Corvette lineup, which is currently just above 500 horsepowers. Our guess is that the new Corvette will boast at least 600 or more horsepowers, which is similar to that of the Viper SRT10.

The new vette engine is going into the CTSv, not with all 600HP but a healthy amount.

you obviously haven't driven a z06 or read the reviews of it, cause that car actually handles really well. Top gear compared the z06 with 575 maranello.

^^^^My question is why is GM spend all this reseach , time, money to build a great car like the Z06 (minus the cheap material and quality, thats another story )to compete in a HP war with the viper when their nomal car and suv line up for everyday people for suck garbage ? This beats me !!!!

8.4L V10 and only 600hp thats sad, even worst Audi S6 5.2L V10 and 435hp lol.

BMW 5.0L V10 puts out 507hp. Just imagine if they did 8.4L 800+hp wow.

adoptgreyhounds - I completely agree with you that the M5's engine is an amazing piece of work - 8000RPMs in a V10 is getting into F1 territory (which I believe they used as some inspiration).

However, HP isn't all there is to an engine. Keep in mind that Viper engine is going to be putting out somewhere around 500-600 lb-ft of torque. The M5's engine only puts out ~380. That is a HUGE difference and shows the distinct differences between the two cars' personalities - the Viper is more of a ripsaw whereas the M5 is more like a surgeon's scalpel. They both have their uses and benefits.

adoptgreyhounds, the V10 the S6 and S8 uses was detuned to 435hp. It originally produced around 520hp in the lambo

They also increased the engine size by .2 liters to make it more flexible, or as some people refer to as torquier. The emphasis on the S6 and S8 engines was more towards torque, I believe they have about 398ft. lbs. of torque compared to the Gallardo's 379ft. lbs. of trq.

Jmr07A4- Yes I think most of us here know it's a detuned Lambo engine. Why increase displacement yet detune it, not for torque 5.0L's is big enough to get 360ft. lb + with.
My point is why use a big V10 which adds more front end weight to a already front heavy car and only run it at 435hp, when the 4.2 V8 will produce 420hp and easily 435hp with less weight over the front axle.

8000 rpm is not F1 territory. Try 14,000 rpm and you are getting close.

F1 territory for 2007 is a limit of 19,000 rpm for the 2.4 liter V8 engines they are using. During the last year of the V10 3.0 liter, back in 2005, some engines were producing close to if not 19,000 rpm. The new FIA regulations have a limit of 19K rpm imposed for everyone.
