Rumour Mill: Audi Could Rock Frankfurt With A 350HP RS-3 WRX Killer

Audi has not yet officially unveiled an RS3 but we can let loose our imaginations, can't we?

An RS3 will most likely come with Audi's 2.

5 liter, 5-cylinder turbocharged engine first seen in the TT RS. That engine produces 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque. It will also be a strict quattro (all-wheel drive). The Swedish mag is also speculating that an RS3 variant of that engine may be dialed up a little and feature anywhere from between 350 to 400 hp, making the model faster than an R8 with the 4.2 liter FSI engine.

If there is going to be an RS3, the Frankfurt motor show next month would be the ideal place to premiere it and that's what the Swedes at Auto, Motor & Sport are saying.

The VW GTi-R failed to keep up with the Evo and STi, I guess putting on a more expensive badge is supposed to do it?

Will wait to see what sort of numbers this thing can put up although it seems VW is trying to save weight by dropping 2 doors and shortening up the chassis.
Advice to VW, who cares about HP, concentrate on making a better engine and car. The STi only makes 306hp and it can rack up the bodycount quick (the M3 is on that list).
The RS8 has 219 more hp and weighs less yet can barely beat the STi by over .5sec and the STi can pull a higher g.

What's an RS8?

Hmm, audi is claiming the v10 gets up to 1.2g on a skid pad. Which year of STi are you claiming can best that? I don't think any are above a 1g rating with stock tires yet.

And 0.5s off of 3.9s isn't just barely, maybe if they were running at 10 second 0-60 times. But the faster you get the exponentially harder it is to pick up time. Do to traction... i.e. a modified 600hp subaru will not get a 2.2s 0-60 time, it will probably get around 3.6s.

I really do like subaru, an 05 sti would be amazing to have. You just can't lie about numbers though...

Yikes, my bad on the research. The lateral g stat I grabbed was from the S8 which oddly enough has the same hp. Does make more sense now as I would've expected the R8 to be in the high .9s at minimum.

As for the .5sec off, yes, it is still barely. The STi has less than 1/2 the cylinders and displacement and still keeps it close to .5sec.

If you really want an amazing car, compare it to the Mitsubishi Evo MR-FQ400. 0-60 in 3.5 and is even more rare than the R8 and still only packs 4 cylinders.

Audi's 2.5L 5 cylinder engine sure sounds like the Rabbit's 2.5L 5 cylinder engine.
I actually don't mind Audi except for their diesel sedans (SUVs I'm generally OK with if they have 6 or fewer cylinders).

huu76, why do number of cylinders or engine displacement matter when you get the same fuel economy (or better depending on the source) but with the more power out of the v10?

The older evo's are nothing more then a boxes with very large turbo on them. Sure it might kick you in the pants, but it's gonna be when you no longer want it.

Basically, the only thing good about the car is it's power/liter ratio. It's painful to drive, gets worse fuel economy then similarly powered larger displacement engines and it looks ugly imo.

By your reasoning, why stop at 12 cylinders? All cars should have 36 cylinders and 22L displacements.
Real engineering is getting more from less, whether it be mileage, speed, handling or a combination.

Because for a 36 cylinder 22L engine to get good fuel economy, it would never rise above 200rpm, at those slow speeds it would be thermodynamically more fuel efficient allowing a better burn and would have a large advantage by have a very low amount of energy wasted through friction, but it would also be massive and hella expensive... and you are right, real engineering is about getting more from less, and in the case of engines, these larger displacement engines are getting more power from less fuel therefore I shall argue that they are better engineered then simply slapping a bigger turbo onto it.

Joe_limon,
Although I'm not a fan of turbos because they don't fit my driving style however they are good in that you only burn fuel when you really need it. Otherwise the cars behave close (but not identical) to regular 4bangers.
If you have 12 cylinders, you're burning fuel in all 12 (unless you're got multi-displacement which the Germans as far as I know aren't using).
