SOUND OFF: Are You You Being Branded By The Car You Drive?
We see the advertising where the luxury car owner enjoy the day yachting across the bay, then runs from the deck of the boat to the car off to an art auction. This advertising alone paints a pretty picture, but the picture they paint is pretty far from the truth for most of us.
How often do you go from a fashion show, to a wine tasting and then on to an artist exhibition all in one day in your Lexus? Or how about carving through the back hills on a remote South Carolina trail at breakneck speeds to arrive just in time at an equestrian event in your BMW?
To me it is more like run off to the grocery store, then to a kid’s soccer game, then grab a car load of boys to run to a Scout show. Now while my daily activities may be far more typical, do we want to see that? Not really, it is far easier and many times more appealing to buy into the branding message when we choose our car.
Does that BMW really portray me as a sporty person? Does that Lexus shout to everyone that I have class? Does my Audi
make my butt look big
attract smiling glances from those that know what true quality is?
Now no matter what we think, we are influenced by the message that our car defines us to others. Whether is be bold and brash, or subtle and sleek, it is a reflection of our character, taste and sometime social status.
So knowing that, what type car do you drive and what does it say about you?

G37- Since I don't have a wife and kids yet, I'm trying to enjoy the Sporty Coupes as much as I can. I basically chose it for the car that it is rather than what it says about me.

So what made you choose such a terible car then? Did you not test drive anything else in that price range? I'm just curios why somebody would end up with a glorified Nissan G37 tractor when great cars like BMW 335i, Mercedes C350, Audi A4 3.2 and even Lexus IS350 are available. Why end up with a ghettomobile like the Nissan G37 rattle box when you can do so much better? Anyway, sorry to hear that you wasted your money on such inferior product.

Two can play that silly game of a car branding it's owner. An owner can use a car to make a political statement such as patriotism by buying a domestic or by driving a tiny death trap if one is a greenie. One can take it a step further by getting a custom license plate to express life style, sexual needs or whatever.

Star,
C350 and A4 are sweet sedans but I want to still enjoy coupes as I stated before. The G37 also out handles and blows the doors off of these 2.
335i is a great car but similarly equipped as my G, would have costed me an additional 10k.
Also, with a sharper steering ratio, stiffer suspenssion, and LSD differential, the G37 has a sportier feel to it. Need I say more?
What puzzles me is why you've developed such hate towards this car...cuz we both know what ur saying makes absolutely no sense!

showtime,
The ride in the G37 doesn't even resemble something sporty. This car is an abomination that handles like a school bus and has an engine that I'm sure was designed initially to be used in a tractor but by mistake ended up in this two door rebadged economy car. I don't hate Infiniti or any other car brand (that's a ridiculous accusation) but that doesn't mean I don't have likes and dislikes based on the quality of various brands.
Infiniti builds rattle boxes that feel underpowered and heavy. I do dislike them because they are cheaply built, overpriced and offer a really boring ride. An econobox like EVO makes up for the bad build quality by offering a fun ride at least. The G37 doesn't give you ANYTHING. It is one of the most boring cars ever built and unlike with Lexus you don't get neither reliability nor good service.
I wish I could say that the G37 is a good car, believe me, I would. But I simply can't. Is just that big of a POS.

Right, and what do you say to all these people that dissagree with you? That they don't know anything about cars? You're way off buddy...Way way off.
If you want your opinion taken a little more seriously then don't talk nonsense about how it handles like a school bus when it has a slalom of over 71mph, or say it's a rattle box when I don't hear one rattle on the car and actually feels very solid.
0-60 in 5.3 feels heavy and underpowered to you? What do you drive? an Enzo Ferrari? doubt it!
Maybe I should take you for a spin in it and get your heart rate up to 135 like 5th gear did to those chicks...and then u can tell me what a hell of a tractor it feels.

showtime,
What do I tell to the people that disagree with me? I tell them to go **** themselves. Why? Because I know cars, these people don't.
Now let me tell you about the G37:
-the manual transmission is notchy.
-the clutch travel is way too big and takes really strong muscles to work(depress) it.
-the car vibrates badly at idle(like a tractor)
-the brakes are noisy and the feel is horrible.
-the acceleration is underwhelming. The car feels extremely anemic under 5000 RPM(usable range in day to day traffic).
-the engine is extremely noisy and the amount of vibration under moderate or hard acceleration is unacceptable for a modern car.
-the exhaust note is too similar to an industrial vacuum cleaner
-the suspension is noisy and is extremely harsh over bumps in spite of feeling too soft when cornering
- the car is extremely nose heavy and it corners worst than anything I've ever driven
-the interior is extremely cramped(smaller than a 1 series BMW) in spite of the generous(read bulky) exterior size of this car.
-the car has the same build quality as a Kia Rio and rattles like there is no tomorrow.
By the way if you think G37 is a fast car you never been in a fast car before. A GTI feels faster than a G37 and in 99% of the situations it actually is faster.
But you and the other clueless fanbois can keep looking at specs on paper and think that they paint the whole picture. The G37 is the only car I drove that is claimed to have more than 300 HP but feels like a 170 HP car.
The BMW, Mercedes or VW horses seem to be a lot stronger. I wonder what do they feed those freaky German horses to make them so much more powerful than the Japanese ponies.

GTI?? LOL!!...4get GTI, I whipped the new R32 about 2 weeks ago on the highway. Poor guy kept tempting me to race him so I finally gave in...I beat him so badly that I didn't even bother to put on the blinkers cuz I was so far ahead that I figured he wouldn't be able to see them.
So get your nose heavy FWD GTI and then come talk to me, I'll do rings around you all day long.
Now lets get back to your list cuz I do appreciate the effort you've put into it...
-the manual transmission is notchy. (yes, could be better)
-the clutch travel is way too big and takes really strong muscles to work(depress) it. (overexaggerating)
-the car vibrates badly at idle(like a tractor) (false)
-the brakes are noisy and the feel is horrible. (false, no noise for me what so ever and full of stopping power but not as responsive as the 3 series but I don't have to clean my wheels every other day either so that's fine for me...lets not forget the calipers look 10 times better)
-the acceleration is underwhelming. The car feels extremely anemic under 5000 RPM(usable range in day to day traffic). (false, if you view the dyno chart it clearly shows that you get 90% tque at 2500rpm and 95%tqe as early as 3000rpm)
-the engine is extremely noisy and the amount of vibration under moderate or hard acceleration is unacceptable for a modern car. (engine noise and vibration could be lower but not extreme as you call it)
-the exhaust note is too similar to an industrial vacuum cleaner (false, the exhaust note is one of the highest compliments I get on the car, and I love it!)
-the suspension is noisy and is extremely harsh over bumps in spite of feeling too soft when cornering (false, it is exactly the oppossite of what you just said)
- the car is extremely nose heavy and it corners worst than anything I've ever driven (false, you're simply buggin!)
-the interior is extremely cramped(smaller than a 1 series BMW) in spite of the generous(read bulky) exterior size of this car. (false, it is a coupe and for the front 2 passengers it has plenty of room, less headroom in the back due to stylish sloping roofline, what a true coupe is all about!)
-the car has the same build quality as a Kia Rio and rattles like there is no tomorrow. (did you just pull this out of ur a$$??)
Go read a book or something...it's healthy for your brain to learn a thing or two from others...instead of just spitting crap out of ur mouth.

I think the G7 is a great car, and at the price, has few equals. I just wonder how many people who buy it know that it is French. My ultra conservative neighbor was horrified when I told him he just sent his bucks to the "cheese eating surrender monkeys."

328xi Coupe. I didn't purchase it to make a statement or to fit an image shown in a commerical. Instead this car best met my needs at the time including:
1) 6MT with AWD (for New England winters).
2) Fold down seats for skis, boat cushions, sail bags, fishing rods, etc.
3) Fun to drive and sporty. With no wife or kids yet, having just two doors isn't that big of a deal.

that's a nice sentiment. My $0.02 -- we grew up as a Ford family. Always had Lincolns and Fords, my first car was a Mustang GT convertible and I loved it. Now that I'm older, however, my views have changed. Aside from the fact that most of their products are inferior (not all, but most), if those American manufacturers are just going to mismanage my money and piss it away (and in the case of GM outsource factories to Canada and Mexico anyway), I don't feel obliged to give it to them just because "they're an American company". Which they're not really anymore. So my money goes to whoever makes the car that I want in my pricerange.

Are you telling me that you actually believe the c**p you write? Americans are known all over the world as the dumbest buyers on the planet. That's common knowledge.
Nowhere else people use their money as badly as people do here. Period!
Contribution to society??? Are you on drugs? What exactly is YOUR contribution to society? Wasting your time on online forums and bitching about things you don't know anything? Let me tell you something. Your car knowledge equals a big ZERO. All the things you THINK you know about cars are not REAL. What you think you know is c**p publicised with the intent to brainwash you. You are a tool and you don't even realise it. Audi A8L - to accommodate my Michael-Phelps-shaped body and my almost-as-tall relatives. I also wanted sprightly performance, luxury, comfort, reasonable gas mileage, excellent materials and build quality, and beauty/style/elegance/whatever. No car can do all of these things equally well, but the big Audi provides an excellent combination of these attributes, and I can (barely) afford it.

MKV GTI - cuz im poor, in school and cant afford anything faster. Had to be german though. There is just something about german cars that the others dont have. a certain presence. my girl loves it though. Its perfect we can pickup her digital piano and i can race across the city to drop her off @ her gig. Its just a great all purpose vehicle. I can pack my snowboard and ride up the mountain. Shopping at ikea is pretty sweet too cuz everything fits. And its build quality is just superior in its class.
I greatly prefer its low end torque over the civic's high rev system.
What it says about me:
young - smart - good looking - Caucasian - poor - well educated (specially cuz i got the 18's, which just look the bomb) - likes to drive fast - good but sometimes wreckless driver - rather pay a little more and experience a little more luxury (in the appropriate class)

gooch: it very well does brand you as Caucasian. Or in your case also known as "want to be". Just as a Monte Carlo / Impala / 300C would brand you as a Black person or " Want to be black". Its a known social / marketing fact.
Please keep in mind what this topic was about: branding
KZ258: yes i also work and my GTI is fully paid off. Hence to what other people chose to drive or claim to drive on this site. I clearly classify myself on the lower end of the spectrum. I didn't say that driving a GTI makes me poor, but my social status would.

Little boy, you don't know what you're talking about or who you're referring to. I'm a "wanna be?" That would surely surprise all my family and friends. You clearly have no clue. As far as the Impala/300C/Monte Carlo reference goes -- uhhh... NO.
So what you're saying is black people have no business driving GTIs. And white people (plenty of whom I've seen in the aforementioned Impala/300C/Monte Carlo trio you've pigeonholed blacks into) have no business in "black people" cars. Please advance this "fact" to one of your professors so he/she can have a laugh at your expense -- better yet, support this "fact" on this site with numbers. Otherwise, don't be an ass. In fact, I'd say someone like you shouldn't even be driving a GTI -- it is clearly beyond your mentality.

gooch: K Son, don't wet your pants right away. Just because your family and friends are clueless doesn't mean it isn't so. I don't know where you live but it is broadly known that the 300C is referred as the black mans Mercedes and the Impala/Monte Carlo as ghetto mobiles.
If you read my comment/post the way i wrote it you would understand that it was based on what the TOPIC IS ABOUT --> BRANDING.
If you dont know what branding means, there is a good website called google.com that will help you out.
I never said black people have no business driving GTI's. People can do whatever they want to do. Just because you read what you want to read and play the black suppressed race card and want to whine about it, dosen't change what i wrote. If you want to argue about racial issues with me we can take it to a different site. I like to talk about cars here.

Seriously, shut up child. It's funny how you will say stuff on the internet you would never say to my face. That's why I can't stand people like you. Your crap gets called out, then you backtrack and try to make it look like I'm the idiot.
tsk, tsk. When you're able to talk to grown men, let me know.

I called you out on your own bullshit, you cant stand it, and that's understandable, cuz I'm right and it hurts you deep down inside.
You cant stand the fact that you are a more stereotypical and hypocritical then a white person.
First you assume Im a child, because i go to school.
That's because there is a school that is called graduate school. you should check it out once you get your GED.
Secondly you assume i wont tell you all this to our face, because I'm on the internet and voice my opinion as fact.
You dont know me, so i suggest you stop making assumptions.
Stand people like me? you are the very person you protraiy me to be that you hate.
You must not like yourself very much.
I don't try to make you the idiot. You ARE the idiot.
i win
thank you autospies :)

Sort of depends on who's making the judgement.
Someone with brains will know that most SUVs and trucks cost more than those cheap entry-lux poser cars. People who don't care what it is will lease anything with the right badge glued on and its quite evident (fresh out of school but hasn't got a clue).
New Jeep = rebadged mass market garbage.
Old Jeep = Indestructible, sensible and independent.
Yeah, you're branded by what you drive, like it or not and whether its true or not.

Got an 04 Jetta as a Daily driver that is paid for.
Waiting to get a more luxurious car, but not sure what yet. Will most likely keep the Jetta.
Also have 2 Italian scooters as well that I use more now that the weather is nicer.

I switch cars too often to allow time for other people to brand me based on what I drive.

Honda Insight:
People believe me to be an ecomaniac with his head in his ass, truth is, i'm a college student with barely any money to spare on gas.

Same here..but the only difference is I aint no College student. Honda's are reliable and gas saving cars and making an investment on expensive cars (with their ridiculous maintenance charges) I'd rather invest into something that will last and inexpensive.

Audi A6. I did not want to follow the crowd who think they are better than everybody else because of the brand of car they bought. Audi gives me everything the competition does plus it gives me superior levels of performance than any brand in the winter (reason why I leave the SUV in the driveway and take the A6 when I go skiing).
I don't overpay for what I get.
The reliability during the 9 years and 130K miles has been superb.
Still drives like new.
They offer 12 years of no corrosion for a reason (because these cars DO NOT rust-like a previous Acura I owned).
I prefer modern and unique design rather than cookie cutter designs.
Boy Racer image is for teenagers, I prefer classy and sporty.
And my new favorite... my friends make fun at my car because Audi shares parts with Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini!
My next cars: Q5 3.0 TDI and A7 3.0T (when it becomes available).
quattro, there is no substitute.

i'm in the market to replace my bmw 3... i'm torn between the new A4 and the upcoming G37 sedan...there is somethings i don't like in both cars... i'm torn... i can't decide... wondering if i should wait till next year so the A4 can get its kinks out and the G37 can be further refined... totally torn... i need an honest opinion from anyone who cares to give one :) ... which one... is truly better ...taking into consideration everything... including engine noise (my issue with the current G35)
