SOUND OFF: What Makes You Dislike Certain Brands?

If its just any brand it would have to be Chrysler. The styling that is coming out from them just sucks. That includes both Jeep and Dodge. Also being inside one just feels uncomfortable and driving one I feel like I don't have any control of the car. I know every company has it ups and downs but I think Chrysler just has a whole lot more downs than ups.
The other brands that I don't like is Acura and Hyundai, mainly on the idea that they think of themselves has a luxury brands that compete with BMW and Mercedes and other similar makes.

despite the name, I dislike Audi. People rant about there interiors when in fact the build quality is the same a BMW and Mercedes. The interior designs may be nice, but they are in no way more comfortable, so there is no reason i would buy one over the Merc or BMW. I also don't like how every Audi looks the EXACT same, the design gets boring fast. So Merc are more comfortable, and BMW are luxury sport. The competition also offers AWD on just about every model so there is no real point for them to be bragging about it anymore, in fact I believe BMW offers a more advanced awd system on its vehicles now. Also in many cases Audi's are ridiculously over priced. Another thing that rubs me the wrong way about Audi is how they publicly go after BMW, where in almost every case BMW offers better and more advanced tech, for example, engines BMW makes better petrol and diesel engines period, and just better balanced cars in general.Just b/c they have recently produce two decent car the rs4 and r8(i personally prefer the 911) it dosent make up for decades of mediocre cars. And there fans think every in the VW group is the best w/o ever supporting there argument.

My two least favorites are BMW and Lexus/Toyota. BMW because of the people who drive them, not all, but there are some pompus people who drive them like they own the road. There are many who drive that way, but seems like they are all in BMW's. Lexus/Toyota seem to be so boring, nothing excites me about them, yet they have people who will buy them because they are what they are. Reliable, yet boring, overpriced, appliances. Just my opinion. And yes, I have been in them and driven a few, but will not own them.

I loath Lexus the most. its a god awful brand. Probably the MOST shameless. Lexus has done nothing but copy its competitors and hasn't invented one useful thing. In all seriousness, why on earth would ANYBODY want to spend 3times asmuch money for a toyota. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, dont give me this reliability crap. Do you see who drives Toyotas ??! People who cant drive and who go below the speed limit. In fact when im in traffic there is always some **** that drives a Camry that is blocking me on the left lane and causing traffic jam's. I dont want to go into detail of who is driving these vehicles most of the time, cuz i dont want to divert this into something else.
Seriously though, why do you think their reliability apparently is so good ? cuz there consumer demographic dosen't put the pedal to the medal or anything to cause excessive wear. And dont get me started on those golden badges they have on the rear and for their logo. That is the MOST tasteless thing i have ever seen on a car. despicable.
If you like lexus that just means that you like mediocre things and a big SHAME ON YOU. cuz lexus has no heart or a soul. seriously. those cars have no presence. I think its even unjust to put them in the same class as Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

I'll have to go with Toyota. Its not that I dislike them, both my mother and grandmother drive one. But I think most of the hype they still get should've been over years ago. Granted most of their hype was warranted. They make great reliable cars that work to specification(like an appliance). But now, I really see them no differently than most of their competition. Mainly because most of their competition has matched that quality quite closely and in most cases can be argued that they've been passed. Their performance numbers are usually just mid-pack, the styling in their cars are created to make sure you lose it in a shopping mall parking lot and yet they are still hyped and I don't fully comprehend that hype any longer.

Agree with candywhite to some extent...

I don't like manufacturers who blatantly rip off other companies' designs. Toyota/Lexus has copied everything from Mercedes, BMW, Ford (the F-150), and even the Audi TT.

Can't they be display even the slightest shred of originality?

To be honest, I don't have any problems against MOST cars. I realize that though it might not float my boat, there are things to like about it. For instance I couldn't see myself in a Lexus but I understand that if you want to be in a cacoon(?) from A to B and like that level of refinement it's a sweet car. It's like a poor mans Rolls. I wouldn't drive one of those either just cuz its not my style. Doesn't mean I don't like it. I don't like ugly body styles and poor quality obv, but as for cars there are usually redeeming qualities. So the thing that turns me off the most are the people that drive them. That means you A-hole w/ the bluetooth driving your BMW. That means you unreasonable A-hole on these messageboards that think Lexus is the greatest luxury car/sports car/exotic car/economy car of all time. Like everything else in the world... for me, its the people that make me truely hate something.

Nice graphics agent 009, now we know what he really does. He plays Grand Theft Auto at night. Seriously though, all car manufacturers have their ups and downs. The easy targets are Toyota and Hyundai for perpetuating derivative design. Sadly, I would have to say Mercedes is one of the worst offender these days. Merc has lost touch with its teutonic roots by following Lexus making more and more stylized “Asian” looking cars. What happened? The gullwing 300sl’s were a combination of art and engineering. Even the boxy looking E class models or the late 80’s were still “German” in design. The current S class looks like an oversized Ford Focus. It’s got the same flared out wheel wells and a similar raked hood. The concept Mercs are even worse, looking like something Hyundai would design. Burn Audi and BMW all you want but they still represent a particular Germaness that Mercs are lacking more and more. The only possible exception to all this is the current SL. It too is a bit over designed but it maintains the nobility of a true German car. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the Mercedes line up.

I dislike hyped up vehicles more than brands in general. I dislike when a car is made up into something is not. I dislike when a car like the GT-R is compared with an icon like Porsche. I dislike when cheaply build cars like Hyundai, Infiniti or Pontiac are compared with a real driver's car like BMW. WHY?
Because there is absolutely nothing in common between these cars other then some specs on paper.

Let's take the biggest farce in the automotive history ..the new Nissan GT-R. This car looks likes absolute garbage in real life and it drives the same as any other Nissan car. You can see the crappy paint, the gaps between panels, the bad quality materials, the typical unfinished look of an inferior product. It is a Nissan, a faster one but nevertheless still... a Nissan. There is absolutely no hint of anything special. Put it next to a brand new base Porsche 911 and the Nissan GT-R looks like a cheap pile of trash by comparison. It's quality(Porsche) vs quantity(Nissan).

This trend in which cars manufactured by lowly brands are put against cars made by famous car brands is absolutely pathetic especially when the article concludes that somehow you get "more" when you buy trash...is just insulting. I can see the dumb masses wanting to believe this c**p but anybody with a brain, who's a real car guy knows that that kind of conclusion is simply a bad joke. I might not be able to afford a Ferrari but please don't insult my intelligence by trying to feed me the idea that I'm getting more by buying a POS Nissan instead. Again, I know that any idiot will cheer at the suggestion that he could get more with less money but I also know that any intelligent person knows the things will always be the same. You get what you pay for. Period.

And here comes something even more sad. The fact that the image of the car enthusiast was trashed because of the amount of clueless idiots lurking on car websites and pretending to be "car guys".
Any real car enthusiast will find a comparison between a Porsche and a Nissan or a BMW and an Infiniti unusual, ridiculous and ultimately offensive. If you, whoever you are think is normal ...find another hobby. Cars are NOT your thing.

I hate Hyundai because they made some of the world's crappiest cars for decades. Then all of a sudden they boost their quality a little bit and they immediately have a good reputation despite the fact no one knows how long the new era of Hyundais will last since they're not even four years old yet. I also hate how they build the Genesis and everyone starts saying how much better it is compared to Lexus (even though the interior is laughable for a luxury car and the exterior is a copied version of the LS 460). Basically, I think it's annoying that Hyundai hasn't had to work for their reputation, especially since they were a company who needed to more than any other.

I absoulutely hate Chysler. I remember in Puerto Rico when I had to rent a Chysler 300. It's performance is so bad by the time we got to 60MPH, we had to brake because it accelrated so slowly. It handles like a barge and your back hurts so much after a three hour trip. I hate Toyota and Lexus only because of their fans which are overkill and bias. I also had to rent one in Puerto Rico and the Camry is a great car. It's comfortable, it has so much room, and it's quite good in overtaking. If it weren't for their fans, I would like Toyota.

I like Audi styling but for god's sake VW give these guys a rear drive platform to work with. They are awful to drive. Newer BMW's are hideous hopefully they will sort it out and all Toyota's and Lexus are ugly and have been for a while...don't know if they will ever get it.

BMW because most of their buyers are pretty much useless to society. No productivity but they think leasing a car makes them a somebody.
Kofi Annan used to have his ass chauffered around in a BMW (he fits BMW's useless image perfectly) and claimed the UN was helping the poor.

I'm not a big fan of ASSUMPTIONS. Automatically assuming that if this one requested modification costs extra money to implement, and the costs have to be past on to the consumer in the price of the vehicle, that NOONE will by the vehicle.

A good example is Ford with the IRS setup for the mustang. They don't even make an attempt to throw a limited production of IRS mustangs out there. They just assume it won't sell because it's an added cost to the consumer. S***. You don't see that keeping people from buying Dodge Charger R/Ts or Chrysler 300s.

mine would be Audi, Infinit, and Chrysler.....Chrysler because despite all the good examples of good cars, they still dont seem to be able to get it right i just dont get it, bad styling, poor interior quality,and low epa ratings it makes no sense....Infinit because they still havent in my eyes become the step up brand from nissan, but simply a sporting division....the interior qualities arent on par with the classes they are in....and they rely heavily on Nissan running gear while continuing to rise in price, without a continuing rise in quality and refinement..ALso because theyve learned how to make sports cars, not premium cars, and other than dynamics which still fall short, and noises they miss the mark in so many ways.....Audi because they have the resources, technology, and know how and still make many cars that make no sense...with poor dynamics, and bland styling...that could honestly be anything...its like they are trying to compete with themselves....the A5 isnt sporty in the slightest, and even the S5 lacks steering feedback and they both have an odd ride and handling mix that includes a subpar ride and very light steering like most other Audis...with as many resources as they have there is no excuse for them to be this bad

beken: I agree with most of your comments, I`ve driven a couple of Chevrolets and they have been ok, but not exciting, the 1 Chrysler I drove was the PT Cruiser which in the 6 weeks I had it performed well, handling ok not outstanding, but build quality, ie fit of panels doors and boot etc, was very good, it was well equipped and comfortable.
The new Mini looks and performs well, good economy, wonderful 6 speed gearbox etc., I have a BMW which has been faultless and comfortable on a long drive, unlike Toyota my poor back after 100 miles, just couldn`t get comfortable, I also like French cars like Citroen and Renault, very comfortable and well equipped

As an automobile enthusiast, I can't say I hate any brand of car.

I love every car. Even if it is an ugly piece of crap I would never buy, I still celebrate its existance.

Why?

Because it's a damn car, and all cars are interesting in their own way. And the more different makes out there, the more choices people have.

As much as I would love to own a new Aston Martin DBS, I would hate to see one on every street corner.

I dislike Lexus, Toyota, Honda, Acura, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Suzuki, Daewoo. These cars are poor, cheap cars. I am an expert and have test-driven them all for 100,000 miles. I also have a p.HD. in engineering. These cars I find are boring, dull, cheap, low-quality, ugly, bland, mediocre.

I like Chrysler, BMW, Ford, VW, Audi, Mercedes, Chevrolet, GM. These, 8 cars, on careful inspection by my engineering and science team were excellent quality, exciting, dynamic, beautiful, high-quality, carefully thought.

Because I have a p.HD. I know my stuff.

I also think that Italians and Asians can't drive. I was driving my new Ford once and wanted to go fast, but the lady in front of me was going really slow. She stopped really quickly to avoid someone who swerved into her lane from the opposite side of traffic that was dodging a squirrel or something, and then I hit her car in the back because I couldn't stop the car fast enough. It turned out she was an Asian lady, and the judge was also Asian and that is why the judge sided with her and not me in the case. All Asians are cheaters.

The other time I hit someone in the back, it was an Italian man, and he should've looked in the mirror to know that I was approaching but he didn't. When he stopped at a YELLOW light, which I wanted to pass, I hit his car. The cop told me it was my fault!? And I had to pay for the damages.

Italians CANNOT drive!!! I have been into only 8 accidents in like 6 years, but 6 out of 8 times was with an Italian driver. 1 with an Asian woman, and 1 with a Jewish woman.

I live in an Italian community and almost EVERYONE is Italian, that is why I know they cannot drive. I have the experience with them.

BMW is also much better than Lamborghini for the price. Lamborghini is pretty good, but you can get much better or that money.

I'm also not a fan of Ferrari. Corvettes are much better if you like that kind of car.

I don't like Lexus "period". They are in no way comparable to a BMW, Mercedes or Audi. They were created as a marketing gimmick by Toyota to fool Americans into spending more money for a "luxury" Toyota.

Arguably, the new LS and IS-F are leaps forward for Toyota but 2 cars don't catapult you to the rare air of a combined 300 years of heritage, history and success.

And for those think that is snobby, well, it is. Now that a Lexus costs almost the same as a BMW, Audi or Merc I have the right to be snobby. Sell the IS-F for $50k then I'll give Lexus the position it owned when it came out - entry luxury.

I dislike BMW as people buy them solely for the badge and image, whereas Audi enthusiasts have nothing to prove and have no need to show their wealth. It's ironic that BMW is synonymous for affluence and class yet most BMW drivers lease their $35K 3-Series and are sad middle class losers.

I also dislike how certain Asian car brands are trying to leave their class as economic vehicles for the middle class into luxury brands.

Corvettes and Vipers as white trash couples buy them to look cool, you don't look cool, you look poor.

Yes, I am jealous of BMW's success...if you define success as 0.9% and continually lower prices.

It must pain you to know a mid-tier Camry is the same price as a poser BMW and the Toyota commands a financing premium. Toyota doesn't need to give their cars away.

When BMWs return to the E46 and E39 era, then I'll consider 'buying' one, until then, BMW will have to settle for profitless leases from wannabes.

I'm a managing shareholder and I drive an Audi. A middle manager couldn't afford to lease an Audi, much less buy one.

I dislike it when people constantly compare brands or drive their vehicles like something they are not. For example, "My Infiniti M45 gets better gas milage than the BMW 550." Good for you. I don't hate any brand, but I am disappointed in Chrysler and Acura. Chrysler, for continuing to fit the cheapest interiors in the business to its cars, not to mention their horrible exterior designers and inefficient engines. Acura, for their lack of direction and focus, as well as the weird-for-the-sake-of-being-weird exterior designs. However, I hope both of them can succeed in the future.

Conversely, my favorite brands would probably be the German quartet, Audi, BMW, M-B and Porsche. I love the Italians but they're not realistic for me.

American Brands - mass market, cheap materials, lack of identity

Hyundai, Kia - economy image, although the Genesis is seriously challenging that thought

Mercedes - not so much a dislike, more of a different taste. Great Cars.

Jaguar - all name, no performance, synonymous with breaking down

Mini - neautral. nice car but I would prefer a more modern looking Audi A1 (metroproject)

BMW - overpriced, overhype, bought by those in need of image, lately lacks styling, cheap interiors, horrendous command system, trying too hard to be different.

Lexus - all about reliability (while this may be important for some, its not for all), pure luxury-no sport, regardless of the misleading commercials, sells more to "trying to keep up with the Jones' crowd" but its downward spiraling trend will now get even worse with the rise of Hyundai.

Toyota - tries to appeal to everyone at the same time - phonies. On one side it claims to be the most environmental, on the other is a pick-up truck gas-guzzling polluter with the best of them - only interested in profits.

Honda - they are ok but need some cojones when it comes to design.

VW - great styling but not my prefered mode of transportation (FWD based)

Volvo - family car. nothing else.

Saab - Subaru/GM blood, lost any Saabness it ever had in the past.

Cadillac - the only American brand with any hope of becoming successful. I have yet to test drive their cars, but the styling on the smaller cars is awesome. however I see no use for the Escalade other than for hip-hop music videos.

Porsche - will they EVER update their boring design significantly. Yes, the purists will not have it, but common people! This is the main reason why I would NEVER buy a Porsche over an R8-with performance on par, styling becomes the deal braker. R8 V10 please!

Ferrari, Lamborghini - no words needed here.

Bugatti - Awesome, redefining super ultra luxury one car at a time.

Infiniti - nice design but cheap interiors. Loved the FX I had but interior was plasticky.

Audi - love the brand but areas it needs to improve are, improve time to bring concepts to production, add more exciting colors, sportier wheels, broader and more aggressive marketing, need better Le Mans racer (Peugeot has surpassed the R10 in performance - though it still a century behind in reliability and robustness).

Land Rover - its all about the name. Who cares much at all about off-roading capability. My type of "off-roading" is taking the gear up to VT or NH for a weekend of skiing. I much prefer on road performance and handling than off-roading.

Acura - FWD, boring styling (although the Japanase do not seem to understand this- they keep working on the ugly design)

Lexus - did I already say this brand was boring?

I'm starting to dislike German cars because of Star and I own two. He makes me love my Japanese cars more and more. I don't dislike a certain brand. I hate people that dislike something because they have something else. I hate people that say Lexus is just a Toyota (like thats a bad thing). I guess I should have expected a bunch of bitching, complaining and lying on a post like this. I've read so much untrue descriptions of cars on this site. It is absolutely ridiculous. Grow up. I think some of these folks don't have a life and live to argue w/ a human so they can somehow feel humanized.

Interesting article and question, although as in many the responses then to digress quite a bit. Likes and dislikes about cars are really due to perspectives and inherent biases. Some people value quality, others comfort, some handling, others straight out horsepower, and many some combination of the aforementioned plus whatever other factors they feel are important.

This forum tends to be pro-BMW. I'm not particularly partial to BMWs myself and think they are over priced and over hyped. They do make nice cars though and this is from a person that's driven, if not owned, everything from a 2000 up to a 12 cylinder 7 series. When compared to Audi, the BMW typically has a bit more emphasis on performance while the Audi does a better job on luxury and ergonomics. That's not to say that Audi doesn't do well in performance. Anyone who's driven their RS series can attest to that, nor that BMW isn't somehow luxurious. It's just that each company puts their emphasis in different areas and we, as consumers, also have our inherent biases that play into our decision making process. In some ways this is akin to comparing Toyota and Nissan; one emphasises quality while the other tries to tweak a bit more performance out of their car. Is either necessarily better or worse than the other? Not really. Yes they are somilar and yes they are different. So it really comes down to personal choice - what do YOU like better? But just because you happen to prefer one model or brand doesn't necessarily mean that another person is make a wrong choice for them if they happen to choose something else. It's a free country - isn't that a great thing?

A word on the GT-R versus Porsche comment someone made. Competition is a great thing. There is no question that a Porsche is a driver's car that can be driven very fast by those who know what they're doing. The GT-R permits almost driver to do about the same speed without a great deal of skill and potentially for a lot less money than an equivalent spec'd Porsche. (I personally detest the dealerships that mark up the GT-R so much, though, as it looses it's value compared to the Porsche when they do that.) The nice thing is that cars like the GT-R gives more incentive to other car manufactures, including Porsche, to keep their game up. In the long run it benefits us, their consumers.

Another word, this on SMART cars. If you've been to Europe you'll notice quite a few Smart cars. I've even been passed by a Smart car in Germany even though I was driving a 360+hp car at the time. (The Smart driver wasn't heeding the 100kph speed limit on the B road.) It's truely unfortunate, IMHO, that MB decided to put their logo on Smart cars here in the US. Sure, Smart is a MB subsidiary but it isn't made by MB. In a way it's false advertizing as it give the uneducated consumer the wrong impression. There is an A-class car made by MB that isn't marketed here that rightly deserves to carry the MB nameplate for this class of car.
