Although the BMW M235i is a pretty capable coupe, it's pretty obvious if you drive it that it's just not as lively a real M car. Given the power and torque bump provided in the all-new M3 and M4, it's clear that there is a gap left open for an M2. Though I will admit, I never thought there'd be enough room.

So I was surprised to see an M2 appear doing testing recently. And, I was sad to eat crow. But c'est la vie.

Now we're seeing the upcoming M2 in white and sporting some camouflage. While the wheels/tires, brakes and limited-slip differential are spotted in these photographs, you can clearly spot the areas where venting will happen — namely behind the front fender. The big news is the M-specific quad-tipped exhaust.

Now the cat's out of the bag, for real.

The 2016 M2 (F87) is taking shape, now testing with the quad exhaust that's become a hallmark of BMW M vehicles. This time the prototype is fitted with wheels from the M3/M4 prototype which did not make production. Earlier prototypes were testing with the M3/M4 19" Style 437M wheels.

As before, we see the aggressively flared fenders and wider track, M brakes (which will be painted blue on the production M2), drilled rotors and M limited slip differential...
