Debuting to much controversy, it seems like the second-generation Audi R8 will start its life under scrutiny. That's because the first-generation model was so damn good looking and, frankly, groundbreaking.

Not since the Acura NSX had the world seen something so exotic and able to daily drive to and from the daily grind.

While the second-gen has taken its fair share of licks, from what we can tell the reviewers aren't hating it once behind the wheel. A V10 shrilling over your shoulder can do that to you.

Having said that, arguably, the best R8 on offer was always the Spyder variant. That's because you get to hear MORE of the engine barking at you. Seen here for the very FIRST time, it's clear it will echo the second-gen's controversial looks coupled with the styling of the last-gen Spyder. That means a flat rear deck featuring large louvers for cooling, large venting behind the doors and a soft top. Also, check out that rather aggressive diffuser. Looks practically race-spec to my eyes.

Expect the motors to carry over. Latest word on the street suggests a 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show (LAAS) debut.

...The biggest styling changes to the Spyder occur at the rear, where these prototypes have been fitted with a flatter rear deck in order to accommodate the folding soft-top roof. The glass panel seen on the coupé has also been removed, while new air vents to help cool the R8's V10 engine have been added...

...Expect the R8 Spyder to closely match its Coupé sibling in terms of performance. The coupé is capable of reaching 62mph in 3.5sec and has a top speed of 201mph. In top-spec V10 Plus form, the same sprint is acheived in 3.2sec, with a top speed of 205mph...
